Dominica to benefit from LIAT Cargo Service

Dominica is set to benefit from a new venture by regional airline LIAT which will see the movement of local cargo throughout the carrier’s 22 destinations.

Head of Quick Pack and Cargo for LIAT, Wilbur Edwards, told the official launching of LIAT’s Cargo service in Barbados on Tuesday that the new service will lead to benefits for Dominican producers, hucksters, manufacturers and exporters.

He told the launch attended by over 30 regional journalists that Dominica should position itself to benefit fully from the new service.

“As we are on Dominica, let me say that St. Lucia shipped over 60 thousand pounds of produce to the UK weekly before hurricane Tomas. Now those crops are totally destroyed so they ship nothing right now and (Dominica) did not pick up the slack,” Edwards emphasized.

He urged Dominica to act immediately by using the new cargo service to ensure “that these commodities are not sourced outside the Caribbean”.

His view was strengthened by LIAT Chief Executive Officer, Brian Challenger, who noted that Dominica has always been asking for a more reliable way to ship produce abroad.

“Dominica is one of those markets where we can envisage goods both going out and coming in,” Challenger told local journalists.

“We are very excited and have met with the minister and the people from DEXIA,” Challenger added.

The official launch of LIAT Cargo brought together journalists and cargo stakeholders throughout LIAT’s travel destination.

Challenger said, “Dominica we expect will be one of the shining stars of the LIAT cargo service.”
