Dominican earns PhD in chemistry

Commodore-Botoklo is the 4th black female to graduate with a PhD in chemistry from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa
Dominican, Juliette Joan Commodore-Botoklo, has earned a doctorate in Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and in the process, has become only the fourth black female in her department to do so. A Caribbean student was the first to attain that accomplishment in 2013.
Commodore-Botoklo, following a teaching stint at the Wesley High School from 1997 – 2002, obtained two Bachelor of Science degrees: one in chemistry and the other in biology from Midwestern State University. She then taught chemistry for four years (2007-2011) in the Fort Worth Independent School District before entering the Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry program at the University of Alabama.
Commodore-Botoklo’s doctoral journey started in 2011 and ended in 2018. She revealed that she was supposed to defend in 2017 but Hurricane Maria stalled that plan.
With a PhD in analytical chemistry with a focus on mass spectronomy, Dr. Commodore-Botoklo plans to seek employment in industry for method development involving new and more modern mass spectrometers. Her long term goal is to set up a forensics department in Dominica “to serve not only our island, but other islands also lacking these facilities.”
Dr. Commodore-Botoklo is the daughter of Jones and Ursula Commodore of Pottersville. She is married to Senyo Botoklo from Togo, Africa and the couple has a son.

Why are some Dominicans so boastah nuh? Every degree recipient have their picture published in DNO and we hardly hear from them after their 15 minutes of fame. A good *Education* is the cornerstone to national building but few return to D/ca without the expectation of a government job.

You do not deserve a response but i will give one for people who read. We have been paraded around the world by our leaders as people who are poor incapable and helpless. She is amoung the countless number of Dominicans that say otherwise. Insecure people call it boast. She has worked hard (6 years) to get just 15 minutes of recognition and we should all congratulate and be proud. She and many like her serve as ambassadors for Dominica and due to people like her Dominicans work and culture is respected internationally in the academic world and elsewhere. Note she did not fly some place a day pay 50k for a title and aske to be called Doctor. I bet she would still like to be called Juliette. A good education also means independent thinking, empowerment, extermination of ignorance and dependency. Instead of our society embracing knowledge and scientific based growth we still there thanking God for the saviour he send to start red clinic perpetuate poverty and ignorance.

Very well put, Shaka. There is a strange phenomenon that has taken root in the US and the Caribbean. It is called anti-intellectualism where intelligence and academic achievements are frowned upon by many under achievers. This played a role in the election of Donald Trump to the most powerful office in the world. Look at the unnecessary tensions and chaos it is causing . The erudite young lady deserves all the accolades and fame justly bestowed unto her. Let’s not begrudge but lift up each other for exceptional academic accomplishments. Big Up, Dr. Juliette!

Ibo france one way to control people is to keep them ignorant and to control the info they receive. Powerful people with nefarious intentions like to control what they want you hear so they can maintain power, control and spread thier agenda (ideology). Trump is doing just that. Countries like N. Korea, china, Russia do the same. Religion has been fighting for centuries why they warn against false prophets. So its nothing new. Academia is under attack for this reason. You get confusion then fear in the masses then control. If you dont know God the devil takes over. If you don’t know truth lies take over. And finally if we dont educate ourselves ignorance and stupidity takes over. Its nothing new and is a constant battle throughout human history.

Nacimod The end result of an education is “a govt job?” What kind of narrow minded thinking is that?Thats a lazy thinking is because govt is the lowest paying employer you will not even be able to pay the loan for your degree and travel or build a shack. When you pay for higher education think beyond that or don’t waste your money.

In as much as we are loyal to Dominica, if you are setting up a business, do it on the basis of the business environment. By that I mean, set up a business where there is the greatest chance of success. Jamaica and Trinidad are hotbeds of crime and you will have more than enough business to keep you busy. The clientele is right at your doorstep. You will have much greater difficulty in tapping into those markets from Dominica.

License to do what? Some of us are so ignorant, it is not funny. Why do we have to put politics in everything, why have we become so sick as a people?
