Minister Gloria Shillingford (2nd from r) calls for greater effort to keep Dominica clean to reduce the spread of illnesses

Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, Gloria Shillingford, has called on Dominicans to keep the environment clean in order to “reduce the spread of illnesses caused by disease carrying rodents and virus carrying mosquitoes.”

She made this remark during her address at the opening ceremony of the 36th Anniversary of Independence on Friday.

“We are in the times of pestilences. There are all forms of viruses plaguing the world today and some of them are caused by unhealthy living practices,” Shillingford explained. “Let us take greater effort to keep our environment clean, to reduce the spread of illnesses caused by disease carrying rodents,” she urged.

“There is much that we can do to keep Dominica clean, healthy and beautiful, so those of you who have not yet started let us start today,” she said.

In support of Shillingford’s message, Acting Prime Minister, Ambrose George, said,  “Every one of you should see it as our responsibility to play that important role in ensuring that our immediate environment is kept clean then I believe that in celebrating our independence cleanliness can be showcased of one of those aspects,” he said.

Guess Gloria didn’t go to the U.S. to stay after all.
However, that is no excuse for Dominicans to trash and pollute the island. Pick up your trash and garbage and dispose of it properly and I don’t mean burning plastic and tires to put toxic fumes in the air for others to breathe.

One very important reason why DA should be kept clean and that has been completely forgotten in this toppic, is for the development of the so-called “Eco-tourism”.
It is crucial for the economy of the country and unfortunately, it is far from being taken into consideration.
