“Mr. Telemaque, I thought I heard you refer to yourself as Son for Ma John…. so why the hypocrisy”

You see Wesleyman, that is how most people in Wesley Identified me. Now as far as I remember there were four of us in the Village called son, so in order to avoid confusing one with the other, people identified us by our parents.

So you had Son fu Ma John

    Son fu Lucresia

Son fu Ma Lod; and there was an old man living next to Roosevelt at Eden Road called son, and sometimes son-son!

I accepted that, and in order for you to identify, the stock I came from, I may have identified myself to you as Son Fu Ma John; I thought since she was one who lived to be a 103 years old in the village, you might have recognized her as Ma John.

Mow this Ma thing derives from the French word “Madam.” Whereas in the British linguistics system my grandmother would be referred to as Mrs. John, or Mrs. Etnioffe, the French would refer to her as Madam John.

Now this Ma John thing seems to be the language of peasants who spoke only broken French, or patios, so rather than saying Madam, they substituted that by saying “Ma.”

So, anybody indulging in that these days are simply talking the language of peasants, and not knowing they are doing it.

Yo know of all the comments, and all the thumbs down, they make laugh because I do not know why all the thumbs down, however, the one that made laugh until I wanted to crow, is the one liner, where the person called me stupid.

It takes one to know the other oui!

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

congrats Mrs. Fountain. Dr. Blaize may be good but Mrs. Fountain has a wealth of experience; from primary school teacher, to secondary to teachers’ college to coordinator pre school, to special ed etc.Dr. Blaize from primary teacher to Assistant chief.

Good job Blaize has done? What has he done. I dare all of you non teachers to name one things he as done. How are you to compare his merits to Mrs. Fontaine’s.
I think that she will do well in her new post. From my interactions with her she seems to have the best interest of the children at heart. To add to that she is a specialist, in a field where we have a growing number of students. We need the special education people as well. The number of dyslexic, ADD,ADHD etc students that we have is astounding.
Let her serve out her 2 month tm and then judge. But then teachers get appraisals, not sure if anyone one on Cornwall street does. Some do though namely one EO Of the southern district who has been antagonizing teachers in the name of ‘improvement’.

To everyone opinionated people do not get appointed in Dominica because the leaders do not like oposition. (History)remember the freedom party members wanted Mr Brian Alleyne as the leader of the party but Miss Eugenia Charles choose Carbon because she knew she could cntrol him. also when labour party choose Skerrit to be leader of the labour party was it on experience no
it was favouritism. Skeritt came in this way and he leads in this way. Wake up from you all slumber.

Congrats Mrs. Fontaine. To all the disgruntled, qualifications does not make you the best candidate; but qualities do! Congrats again!

      July 8, 2013

A PhD does not necessarily mean that you are the best candidate. All the years spent writing your PhD thesis, the other person could have been there garnering experience. That alone should not determine position. But if the Dr. Blaize guy has the experience and the qualification, then he should get it.
Having said this, congrats to Ms. Fontaine. I know her and she is a brilliant and warm woman.

Congratulations. Ma Fountain, I trust that you will do an excellent job in this position. I loved you as my teacher @ DTC and look forward to good things from you.

    • July 7, 2013

If I was Melena Fountain I would be ashamed to recognized you as my former student, and wish you had not refer to me as ” Ma Fountain”, since there is no such title or abbreviation (Ma) in the Webster Dictionary in reference to a married woman.

When a woman gets married to a man she becomes his wife, as a form of respect if not referred to by her name; can be called, and referred to as “Mistress.” In this case she is mistress Fountain; an unmarried woman is referred to as “miss” whatever their name!

And that crap is not even mandatory, in Dominica when one becomes a nurse, or teacher, or police officer, everybody forgets their name and calls them nurse, teacher, in the case of a police officer; “officer.”

I mean that is their job, but no one is obligated to call anybody by the title of their profession.

Only in Dominica we find this crap!

That is why in the more developed world, nobody have the time to bestowed title on people, we simply call people by their name, their birth name, to hell with this mister, and mistress, and miss thing!

In America, people address their boos by his or her name, they are called by their name, and that’s it!

      Ma Fountain my foot!

Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque the man that knows it all…..on every topic on dno he is the smartest and most opinionated……..geezzzzz man dont u remember your life before u went to america? U’RE SO FULL OF IT!

A mistress is a long-term female lover and companion who is not married to her partner; the term is used especially when her partner is married. The relationship generally is stable and at least semi-permanent; however, the couple does not live together openly. Also the relationship is usually, but not always, secret. There is an implication that a mistress may be “kept”—i.e., that the lover is paying for some of the woman’s living expenses.

Actually considering our French heritage a married woman is called “Madame”… so if someone wants to shorten the word perhaps to be more informal then I would think that “ma” would be appropriate. Just my two cents

I have served in the public service for over 30 years, someone is acting in a position for 2-3 months because the substantive holder of the position is also acting in another position, and the PS makes a headline news announcement that the person is the new Chief Education Officer? There are persons who have acted for years, Oh please it really speaks to the kind of people we have at the helm of our Ministries. So when the PS of National Security returns from vacation leave and Mr. Hyacinth returns to his post as Chief Education Officer what will be the PS’s news, we now have another New Chief Education Officer?
On another note, what happened to the man who has been holding the post of Deputy chief for all those years, and doing a good job? That appointment stinks. Let people play politics, and sing for supper to get post. Time will tell.

I guess congratulations are in order for Mrs. Fontaine. However, It is a downright shame that Dr. Blaize was not APPOINTED Chief Education Officer. One would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to not appreciate his hard work and dedication to the advancement of Education in Dominica. I hope the ‘powers that be’ have a plan, for at the moment it appears that they are simply placing the people whom they can manipulate in very critical positions. Further, their actions will only serve to highlight the capabilities of Dr. Blaize as the he will have to work very hard behind the scenes to maintain some stability in the now wobbly Education Ministry.

Dominica has got to be the most confusing country ever. Why Have an assistant, if he is not suitable or in training to be chief. Automatically, if something happens with the President and there needs to be a change, then certainly and sensibly, the Vice President is next in line. People are talking about the deputy is not qualified, then he should not have been Deputy Chief all this time. Talking about qualification, Is Melena the only qualified person for the position, how many qualified Dominicans were given the boots for positions which they are suitable for. LIkewise, I hope that others were trained to test children, because it seemed as if Melena was the only one who could have done it. Congratulations are in order, but we must never hold on to things as if we are indispensable. There is always another level to climb to, so never be afraid to train and teach others. If we are confident of our potential and abilities, we must not feel threatened by other qualified persons.

“he is a Phd and she is a Phd candidate.”

What kind of language are you talking?

Are you people not tired of making yourselves look as idiots and fools to the rest of the world?

How can someone be a ” PhD” and another a PhD candidate?

When one obtains a PhD degree, they are handed a certificate which serves as evidence that they have studied a certain educational disciplines, for a duration of not less than four years, upon receiving that diploma, when they are ask to state their qualifications, then can then say, on their resume, or in a conversation:

“I have a PhD in education, philosophy, general accounting, law enforcement, home economics, dog catching, or whatever discipline they studied.

As for someone who is in the process of obtaining the degree, it can be stated they are reading for a PhD, meaning they are studying certain educational disciplines which on completion will afford them the privilege of obtaining a certificate, or diploma from the University, or College where they studied.

That title bestowed on them will allow them to be called “doctor.” (Dr.), that does not place them in the category of a medical doctor (MD); they cannot practice medicine since they have no medical training.

I have two Bachelor in Science degrees in the field of Electronics, and Electrical Engineering. I also have an Associate in Science in electronics, and an Associate in Arts in the Liberal Arts, that is my educational background.

In the human flesh I am a person, I am yet; Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque, simply qualified to function in the field of electrical, and electronic technology.

I cannot say here I am a bachelor in science, that would be stupid!

My dear Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque, you are too smart for your own good. Ou tellement savant, ou sotte!! If the person wants to say “he is a PhD”, he/she can darn well say so. It does not diminish his/her intelligence because we totally understand what he/she is saying…communication has been accomplished. You, on the other hand, come across as a condescending ignoramus…a nitwit with a keyboard. With all of your self-declared decrees, one would think you would serve up a bit more sense. But alas, you are proof that education does not cure stupidity.

And by the way…the degree is “Bachelor of Science”, not “Bachelor in Science” as you claim…you silly, silly man!!

Dude you need to be quarantined by the desease control cause you make people sick. The light must evenually shine on you. I don’t know you , wouldn’t like to either. I would bet my last penny that you are not liked by many including your very own family. You need a lesson in humility.

I agree with you in essence. Pardon us, sir, we are infected with text-speak, or Facebook-speak, or Whatsapp-speak, or Twitter-speak. Take your pick.

Some of us on here can’t take correction and a genuine appeal to raise the standard of literacy and speech, especially when presenting our views in public. Go figure.

Marcella Powell ?? whats her qualification – she studied education eh? justasking

    • ok .
      July 7, 2013

I have to add one more person to your list . Mr Edward Lawrence, this guy has taught and been in the ministry of education 99% of his entire career, from grammar school, collage ,private classes , he is also a Table leader to CXC social studies , to UWI , he has a Masters in education Mr Lawrence has acted in several positions yet not one was given to him , he was by pass so many times that he had to change career and went into Law. So i am pretty sure they will lose Dr Blaize very soon in the ministry of education. Just too much favoritism in this Dam country .

Melena has a masters in Education that already qualifys her for the position in my opinion.

Dr Blaize has a Phd in Critical Thinking… seriously… that to me not even making sense to have him so high up in the education system… he should consider himself lucky to have such a job… he should be an English or literature teacher.

So having a Phd in this case to me is futile…

and further more, one does not need to have a phd to occupy this position…. the previous chief had none anyway

We just need to accept the change and all work together for the betterment of our education system because we should acknowledge that one man or woman cannot do it alone..

Congrats Mrs fontaine.. Just do your best to be an efficient chief.
