An e-Business workshop which will incorporate an e-Commerce Diagnostic Assessment of participating firms around the OECS member states has been launched in Dominica.
The process will involve conducting an audit of the firms’ knowledge and use of e-commerce and other e-business tools by using a questionnaire to collect data from the firms.

The objective of the workshop is to introduce the business to available opportunities, to utilize e-Business and conduct an e-Commerce assessment of these businesses which will form an overall OECS e-Business strategy with a focused approach to e-Commerce.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop on Monday Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs, Careen Prevost, described the workshop as relevant and important.

“The use of ICTs has increased over the years and of course increased access to the internet and increased access to technological devices has increased the opportunities for businesses to expand their markets beyond the traditional physical boundaries,” she said.

She added that the use of social media in business has increased and e-Business is also rapidly becoming more important.

“This workshop will focus on e-Business and e-Commerce and will focus on topics such as online branding, website development and hosting, social media, marketing and advertising, e-transactions, service legal agreements, consumer privacy and data protection, legal framework,” she noted.

Prevost pointed out further that a number of opportunities lie within the e-Business and e-Commerce sector.

“Through the use of e-Business and e—Commerce you are better able as business people in Dominica, small and large entrepreneurs to reach individuals who are outside of your traditional markets,” she said. “The government of Dominica has put some focus on the export of services and the Dominica Coalition of Services is a project ongoing with the Ministry of Trade for the past 3 years and it is an effort from CARICOM to increase capacity, in the service sector for export.”

The two day workshop has also been conducted in six other OECS member states.

This employment ministry has the worse track record for delivering on its plans and promises. It all about talk and talk and talk. This new PS seem to have taken a leaf or two from her Minister’s book. They say the obvious; seem more concerned about how they look and sound in the news; raise people’s hope; do not deliver on their promises; do not drive trade; and do not meet the owners of business and industry in any meaningful way. Just another political appointee; a kickback to the ever-faithful DLP family in Bense.

I would be interested in reading the summary the ” audit of the firms’ knowledge and use of e-commerce and other e-business tools” that should be made public at the conclusion of this exercise.

The Caribbean, is in dire need of coming to terms with the new way of communicating both within and without their respective commercial and governmental organisation s. Indeed, any unit, including the household and the individual who does not move with technological creep, is going to be left in the dark age, and it will be harder and harder to be to be come a fill fledged player in this technological age.

While it is admirable to encourage firms to increase their use of social media and incorporate a slate of digital types of transaction payment etc, it is more important to continually train a cadre of competent personnel who can support this ever expanding field.

Additionally, while there will be a substantial outlay to install the requires infrastructure, to operate in the field, substantial savings could be realized if technology managers seek to train their personnel in the various leading propitiatory technologies such as Cisco and Microsoft.

Also, because equipment hardware quickly become outdated, it would be advisable to lease equipment, which will also stand in good stead in service agreements who offer discounts because they know that their are trained staff who understand the technologies.

One aspect that was not mentioned in this news piece was the the inclusion of e-government. E-government is all the rage n the developed world, Creating intranets to facilitate inter-dialogue between government departments; monitoring of essential services and facilitating public access to information and making appointments are only some of the benefits of e government.

I wish the organisations a fruitful and successful activity, and look forward to any follow up publicity that may surface from the same.

The event was for a limited number of persons, not the general public. Get your facts straight before you criticize.
