$3-million road rehabilitation project in Grand Bay

Government is spending some $3-million on a road rehabilitation project in Lalay, Grand Bay, according to prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

The entire length of the Lalay Road is set to be rehabilitated. However, before that is done, Dominica’s Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO) is performing pipe checks and has successfully replaced the water mains on that street.

During a visit to the area recently Skerrit said this is the first phase of the project.

“The first phase of that road was to replace all of the old DOWASCO water pipes …that has been completed by DOWASCO,” he said. “There are a few leaks and DOWASCO is now seeking to correct those leaks. The second phase will be the reconstruction of the entire drainage and sidewalks on both sides of the road from Tete Lalay all the way down. We will be reinstating the roads with asphalt concrete. The total cost of that project is in excess of $3-million and that is just on one road in the village.”

Work, which started in December, is expected to end in February.

Parliamentary Representative for Grand Bay, Justina Charles, said the DOWASCO phase of the project is nearing completion.

“DOWASCO is now dealing with the few leaks that may pop up from time to time because the road was still in use while the work was being done,” she noted. “So they are just making sure before they leave that there are no leaks. They are nearing completion and this week may very well be their last week on the road project.”

Charles said at least 44 persons will be employed on the project to make the road usable for the upcoming carnival activities.

“We have already walked the area with the four contractors, the Minister for Public Works, the Chief Technical Officer and one of the engineers,” she stated. “Some of the contractors have already submitted their estimates for the work and we are expecting the two others to also submit. The Minister for Finance gave us a deadline which has passed …so as soon as we receive the estimates, the Prime Minister will allocate the money. The money is there but it’s just a matter of looking at the estimates that [the contractors] provide; the in-house estimate and come to a final figure so that we can start the project.”

In addition to the Lalay Road, Skerrit drew attention to the housing and sanitation needs of the constituency which he said remain a significant matter.

I remember growing up as a child how beautiful the La’l lay road use to be. The coble stones now covered with concrete and asphalt. A part of our history gone.

Since the Government finally decided to fix the road; you mean not one of the forward thinking leaders in our community put forward the idea to at least; preserve or rehabilitate a section of the coble stones that was the original road in the community? Well! well! well! as Sparrow would say.

Self Preservation does wonders. Desperate time calls for desperate actions in this case.
I am from Grand Bay and yes the DLP has ignored this place.

Its time for Grandbarians to stand up against a government which uses them as and when needed. Surely we must be fed up. Your former Parl Rep and Pierro didn’t give their life for such disrespect and disgrace.

Please Please Please the people of Grand Bay, vote wisely

Spent a few minutes writing my contribution on this news, which I think is positive, and after two days, comment no where to be seen – Can’t DNO not put a disclaimer and let people news post immediately? At one point in time you have to consider that DNO. When thousands of people are reading your news and leaving comments how are you going to staff screeners for all those comments?

15 years in office and all Grand Bay got was a jail!!! Grand Bay is arguably Labour Party’s strongest hold. I heard there is an independent candidate planning to run, which is causing major concern to the DLP. So now Mr. Skerrit shows up in Grand Bay to announce he is going to repair roads and whoo hoo everything is ok?!!! Not this time Skewo!!!!! Too long we have been neglected. It is time that the people of Grand Bay and Dominica stand up for what we want and believe in. Enough is enough!!! Our lovely Dominica is being prostituted with only a select few benefitting.

I made a statement some weeks ago about concrete roads vs. asphalt roads in Dominica, and I will repeat part of it here again. Our local asphalt technicians in Dominica do hot have the right equipment and technology to construct asphalt roads. I believe concrete roads are a better option to be constructed by the locals. It is durable and more manager and we are more familiar with its use. Using that type of road will result in more employment for the people of Grand Bay and other surrounding areas. I recommend full-depth repair to the roads- do a very good job. It is more cost effective in the long-run, even that means reducing the length of road to be repaired. These roads also have to be designed properly for the truck loads. The subgrade should be properly prepared, and a good layer of stone based lay down. And ensure that there is proper drainage. Free advice.

Good job! Now while you’re at it please upgrade the water filtration as was done in Roseau area. Little rain and mud comes down GrandBay pipes. When it rains I don’t overnight there. Just uncover a toilet tank to see the evidence. Bad water filtration.

Ok. Give credit when it is due. This is a very good project, but why does it take so long to get these projects that benefit so many people going. There were so many other government initiatives the got precedence that shouldn’t have. Why is that? Who makes these kinds of decisions? It must be the PM because whenever there is a function, activity, a groundbreaking or ribbon cutting it’s always the PM that gets the credit and is being thanked.

Great news another road is being made good. Yes, politicians do sometimes misguide the public. It is up to us to keep applying pressure on them to get things done for the good of the country. However, in my eyes they are not doing a bad job – we just have to keep the pressure on. But as far as I am concerned all politicians are the same when they want power- they rattle on and on…until they get in then its another ball game!!

      February 6, 2014

Tete Morne is he end of the road, literally and metaphorically as far as the Govt. is concerned.
The people there voted labour en masse since after Pierro died, out of respect and Justina has been riding on the coat tails of that legacy ever since. Don’t go and tell me people would have voted her like that if she had not been the wife of our beloved Pierro. It was Pierre Charles, who promised to put the people of Tete Morne on the map and take them out of isolation by constructing a link road between that community and Souffriere. Well, Pierro died and that promise died with him but his successor still basking in his glory. We will not vote Justina again, not this time. Enough is enough.

I guess change is coming and must come so the PM is covering up for his lazy and unperformed Parl. Reps.
Next will be the Soufreire constituency this Thursday for a special visit by the PM, since this a another area that is without good presentation. Right now Mr. Ian Pinnard is doing damage control in the area to cover up for the present Parl. Rep.
I hope the PM will bring some goodies for the Soufreire constituency this Thursday, or else change will come or must come.

This Government is working and will continue to work. For those of you who are concern of road works and other development in your community, constituency, I say to you please have patience, it will come these things take time but be assured that this government look after all the people of Dominica and so your concerns will be met, just be patient and most importantly, don’t listen to the negative blue people who doesn’t want to see progress such as these but will only comment negatively to even such great development and progress, just wait you’ll see..Once again well done to the government, keep up these great works.

For all these years/decades of blind support for DLP the road work in Lalay is in my opinion not even enough. So little we require to feel appreciated that I feel bad for us. The fact of the matter is that the actual needs of the community are not being met. Grand Bay is no longer the place of self empowerment as I once saw it. It is now this beaten, domesticated pet that comes when ever it is called and would starve to death rather than eat a piece of chicken from the neighbour. Now if that is not loyalty to the master I don’t know what is. Master stop chew the bone and spit out the fragments at us, we are slim down to the bone, our ribs exposed, please give us a drumlet at least once before we die, at least then we would know for a second how a good master treats his loyal pets.
