Assistance for housewives coming

Shillingford

Members of Secretariat for the Inter-American Commission of Women, an organization advocating for women in the Caribbean, are seeking ways to set up a new initiative to assist women at home.

Minister responsible for Gender Affairs Minister Gloria Shillingford told a press conference that she attended a meeting which includes regional leaders advocating for women in the region and the highlight of that meeting was to set up a new initiative to assist housewives.

“I was very interested in the discussion of advancing gender equality through decent work. A lot of our women work as housewives. They look after the children and that is work. Most times it is unpaid work. What we are advocating that at some time in the future, the women who return at home and care for the children and do all of the housework, they will receive some kind of remuneration. Without them the world would not be able to turn,” she said.

Meantime Shillingford said Dominican women have benefited significantly as a result of initiatives put in place by government.

“We have areas where we have skills training programs and you find a lot of women going into those areas and that helps to support and sustain them. We have programs to strengthen and empower women. The Adult Education Program is one of them. Some of the women also get public assistance,” she added.

She said women in Dominica have also been given a voice as a result of the program put in place by government.

This has a lot of promise as long as it is not affected by partisan politics.

Also housewives receiving renumeration for the sake of being good mothers should organise their time at home to educate themselves(if they are not porfessionals) for when the children are more independent that they can join the outside workforce to contribute in a bigger way.

I think it’s a good idea that need a lot of thought

This could be very useful and helpful for all the women who are good mothers and homemakers and just feel trapped by their circumstances. When mothers were not forced to go out to work to take care of their families, society was a better place. Hope this initiative will allow participants to get the time and information required to raise good children. The initiative needs to be carefully implemented and monitored so that it is not misused and abused.

It seems like most you you failed to see where she talked about skills training. That is what these women need; a way to enhance their skills so that they can look after themselves. That hand out thing just keeps them in poverty for the rest of their lives.
