Austrie throws out challenge on water exportation

Dominica is known for having many rivers

Minister for Lands, Housing, Settlements and Water Resource Management Reginald Austire is calling for persons in the private and public sector, both locally and regionally, to invest in the exportation of Dominica’s water.

“We have to find ways to sustain our investment and one of the ways is by the exportation of water whether bottled water or bulk water,” he said “We have a few people knocking on our doors but we have not broken very much ground as far as the exportation of water is concerned.”

According to him the exportation of water from Dominica poses and opportunity for the private sector, regionally and locally, to “put their money where their mouth is.”

“We keep saying that a large section of the world is now suffering from lack of water and so there is a need to export our water but we have to find investments and work out the logistics,” Austrie argued. “That’s an opportunity for the private sector to put their moneys to aid and assist in the economic development of this country.”

The minister made the remarks during the launch of the Third Water Supply Project, Water Area-1 Network Upgrade on Monday morning.

I find his tone very aggressive.

“Put their money where their mouth is”

“to put their moneys to aid and assist in the economic development of this country.”

Private sector has been doing that for decades inspite of incompetent and/or corrupt government and/or buffoon ministers like Austrie.

He speaks with such authority like he himself has tread that path of high risk in pursuit of developing Dominica.

    Gimme a break!

    Tell Austrie to *%”$!!!
Why didn’t he invite the private sector to partner with him and the other Ministers in the Petro Caribe initiative? Let me tell you something, Rot; if water export was as easy and profitable as you want us to believe, you and your kennel would have invested in it silently as you all did with the petrol at Jimmit. So wheel and come again.

The water should be used to produce food for consumption and export. Build irrigation systems and invest in agriculture to put money in the pockets of Dominicans.

Now that Chavez is gone and we are left with a government that never had a vision and, never will have a vision Austrie is now calling on the private sector to invest. Austrie and Mr. Skeritt should take the lead and invest because they are super rich.

I don’t really understand. In 2009 the Govt. signed a 10 yr. licence agreement with Sisserou Water Inc., of which Mr. Atherton Martin is a director, to collect 1 billion gallons of water from the Clyde river for export. The company was to invest U.S.$.32 million for the construction of a pipeline, terminal and storage facilities. What happened to that? I have not heard of even one gallon of water being exported under that agreement since the deal was signed, some four years ago.

Malatete you should start with Arthie, then if you don’t get an answer have Matt and Lennox Investigative Journalist do their thing and report back to Q95 and then DNO

We can even ask Angelo, Fontaine, and Carlisle….they ask all the hard questions…Blessing can also help, and the other patriots

IPO I understand where you are coming from. However, our water is not red, blue or even green. Why can’t Mr. Austrie give an explanation? After all, he is in charge of water, whereas none of the others mentioned by you are.

I saw Athie. he was at the launching. He heard the Minister Oh! yes, he did. I suppose on his next installment on Q, the stationwith the most productive, action and results oriented people, fully appreciaetive of the value of opennes and transparency he will tell the nation what it is that has prevented or is preventing his company Sisserou Water from going ahead with the bulk exportationof watwer. At a different forum the Minister did remind the nation that 4 years ago, Athie was given a river, one of the biggest river in Dominica to harness and sell water as he please. Apart form reason after reason, Athie canot even convince Jerry Brisbane, Issa, Burton, Sukie etc. to join him together with his internastional partners and make bulk water export a reality. Remember when the license was issued, Athie had all the contacts (markets) capital (money) flair (ability to speak and convince) and everything else what was required to get the project going. His only lamentation then was that governmenthad taken a bit long to issue the license. We await Athie. Remember Athie is not an ordinary business man who may have an idea and does not know how to develop the same. he knows it all.

Bulk exportation of water will be a tragedy for Dominica. The amount of infrastructure necessary coupled with the adverse environmental impact, is not worth the effort. Dominica rapidly diminishing ‘rivers’ by international standards are basically streams.

The better solution, is via the value added route, in that case: bottled spring water. Dominica unique status as a nature island should be used in promoted this product , and in return the bottled water will be sold at a premium price. That’s the most efficient way of making money on the product without all the environmental impact of the bulk water route.

The question is, why are there so many people knocking on doors and not one door has been opened? There has to be a reason why we have not been able to export one drop of water. Maybe cost is a huge barrier.

many people were complaining up to this morning about how hard things are in DA.
Despite of our perceived poverty we have not done a good job at managing resources the few we have.
We have to be more nationalistic more so with a resource we have in a bundance.Despite the changes taking and have taken place we can still salvage the resource of” water”
First there must NEVER be the process of giving up our resource to foreigners nunca jamais it’s a no no before we even get started. it’s ours so the Private sector (Dominincans at that reiterate D?cans should control that resource.

Is Austrie for real, as the Americans would say. Dominicans are called such as mosquitoes, cakados, cockroaches and more resently terrorists and he expects the same people to invest in Dominica. A dog is a great animal, but that doesn’t give any Human Being in high office the right to call himself a dog.

    April 8, 2013

The only way the dominica water systems can sustain is by allowing citizens both inland and abroad to invest by allowing we citizens to purchase shares in the company.

    • April 10, 2013

Hello. I am willing to invest in such a company or corporation . We have enough Dominicans living abroad who are middle class and would like to invest but like me I want to know my investment will be secure.

Austrie is Minister for water for the last 13 years and he has not put the mechanism in place to export one bottle of water.
If government and DOWASCO control all the water resources of Dominica, with all the superstructure they have in place which company or individual will be able to export water?
Imagine buying to tankers with the money from the State Palace, what a difference it would make to Dominica.
    NO VISION

I couldn’t agree more. A state palace that was not needed in a developing country such as Dominica. Politics and greed have ruined us. Shame on you Mr. Austrie for being in this position for so long and not do anything about it. As far as I know you fat ass getting bigger. Damn shame.

Annica, try acquainting yourself with the facts. Your post shows that, once again, you are speaking of matters without the slightest clue of the subject matter. Start with a DNO search, Annica. You will be sad at the good news that you will find but you would also spare the world.

Do you know that in 2002 DOWASCO paid the late Charles Maynard and his South African partner one million EC Dollars to develop a business plan for a water project? Do you know that WINERA was paid $300K for the card board factory where FINE fOODS is for the water project?
So shut your blind eye and stop peeping D… A…
Do you know Austrie was the Minister for water then and he is still now.

Name one country (in the OECS) that is ready willing and prepared to place its water security on another country. Mr/Madam Visionary. No guesses, no emotions, just facts and figures. After that you can speak about your vision. Two years ago what did St. Lucia say about water imports form Dominica? There was an active negotiation on the go between a local interst and the Tourism folks in St.Lucia. the Hon. PM was in Dominica attending a meeting and he denied invery forceful terms that St. Lucia is considering buying or shipping water from Dominica.

Water security when the Caribbean is experiencing a drought?
Two water tankers delivering chrystal clear Dominican water to all the Caribbean and you writing about water security?
Dominica is in trouble with ignorance like you and Austrie.
