Chinese business community in Dominica makes donation to Goodwill Primary School

The Chinese business community in Dominica has made a donation of $30,000 in building materials to the Goodwill Primary School for the upgrade of their auditorium facility as well as the construction of male and female bathrooms and showers.

The endowment was announced yesterday at a ceremony under the patronage of the Chinese Ambassador to Dominica, Wang Zonglai, Parliamentary Representative for Roseau North, Julius Timothy and Minister of Education, Peter St Jean.

St. Jean

The minister was very grateful for the donation from the community and thought it spoke to how serious they were about education in Dominica.

He remarked, “You, the Chinese community, are our brothers and you [are acknowledging that you] have a responsibility to help us, to build Dominica and you are coming in a great way and saying that we are prepared to play our part. We are convinced that you have recognized the importance of the relationship that this government attaches to you, our Chinese friends and the Chinese people.”

He continued, “I am indeed happy as the minister for Education for your assistance to upgrade the infrastructure in the Ministry of Education.”

A representative for the community said, “We are very pleased to see that the funds are being well received and we will be delighted to assume, in the future, that the funds will be utilized and the auditorium will have a fresh new look in the near future. We want to take this opportunity to send a message to the public that we appreciate the support that we receive from the local community and our local employees and that we also care about our communities.”

Meanwhile Timothy, who is also minister of urban renewal, has stood in defense of the Chinese business community in Dominica.

Some Dominicans have spoken about what they say is unfair competition from Chinese businesses here, but the minister said that Dominica should strengthen its relations with China.

“If you look at Dominica, the major projects are all funded by the Chinese government. Our relationship with the Chinese people is very sound and we must build on it. When we hear negative comments about the Chinese people we must be able to stand up,” he said.

According to Timothy, “We must not be fooled when we hear a lot of opposition propaganda and a whole lot of negatives. If it was not for Chinese businesses, the poor people of Dominica would not have blenders and microwaves at their homes”.

Timothy added that Chinese businesses are impacting positively on the Dominican economy.

“We have Dragon Windows here. They are employing Dominicans, exporting throughought the Caribbean. That is contributing significantly to the Dominican export and GDP. We have a Chinese water bottling company…The Chinese community are here to assist Dominica in every facet of its development,” he said.

Companies contributing to the funds included Dragon Windows, Lucky Centre, Central Plaza and Sunshine City.

That is an insult to the people of Dominica, for Mr. Timothy to say that if it was not for the Chinese, poor people would not have blenders and microwaves at their homes. What are we doing to each other when we make a comment like that, and that is a minister of Government!!!! Is that support or what?

Wake up Domnicans dont be fool by false kindness of the Chinese. Again look at countries in Africa. The Chinese move in give donations from money they received from the government then things for the local go down from there. Understand they do nothing to be “nice neighbors”. Its about bribing to government and making as much as they can where ever they are around the world.

Me thinks there is a rat in the closet. We know that the chinese government is never seperated from it’s people, so this gift must come indirectly from the Chinese government. As much as we need to upgrade the physical struture of our schools, the money would be better spent supporting the less fortunate in the community through their higher education.

But that doesn’t remove from the fact that yet another foriegn ethnicity is implanted here to become the economic masters of the black… like the syrians and lebanese (not my words! Timothy’s words. …and the black curse continues…. the bottom of the barrel.

Instead of lamenting the rise of another ethnic group, you should open a business and encourage other local people to do the same. it is not good enough to preach in the wilderness. We have to do something about it – put our money where our mouths are.

Unless we become the business class and our people support us, we will forever be servants of foreign businesses.

We complain too much and do nothing about it.
