CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank has donated $50,000.00 toward the construction of a core house to accommodate students at the Sineku Primary School.
Students there were displaced as a result of extensive damage to classroom facilities during the passage of Tropical Strom Erika.
The Honourable Petter St Jean, Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, and Marcela Powell, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, accepted the donation on behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica (GOCD).
Mr. Stephen Lander, Manager Retail Banking and Operations at CIBC FirstCaribbean, noted that corporate social responsibility is a major pillar of the Bank’s strategic focus and that it is firmly committed to the education and advancement of Dominica’s youth. It was therefore natural for the bank to contribute in a tangible way to the effort to return the educational system to normalcy post Tropical Storm Erika.
Mr. Lander also observed that ease of access to, and cost of credit, will be critical to Dominica’s economic recovery following the storm. He encouraged existing and potential customers to take advantage of the Bank’s low rate campaign, under which qualifying customers can secure mortgage loans at 5.9% per annum, land loans at 6.5% per annum, and vehicle loans at 7% per annum.
The Honourable Petter St Jean lauded the bank for allocating resources toward the construction project, and continuing the long-standing public/private partnership which exists between the state and the Bank. The minister emphasized the importance of human resource development to the advancement of Dominica, and the critical role of early education in that regard. As such, he commended the Bank’s historic and current efforts to support the educational system and invited continued partnership in the future.

as we continue on the path of rebuilding it is good to see donations still coming in. hope it is used for which it is intended and the repairs and construction is done in a timely manner. thanks first Caribbean.
I applaud the contribution of FCIB but as a resident of the community I am appalled at the blatant deceit of the minister and ministry of Education. Not a leaf on the trees in the school yard was damaged by Erika. No water damage to infrastructure Nothing at all. However that school was promised a new classroom block a couple years back which is yet to happen. Please Mr St Jean just be truthful it won’t hurt don’t blame Erika for failure to deliver after a number of years. Please DNO do your investigations before you report on certain matters. Thanks though to the bank. The school needs the additional classroom
Thanks for the gift but we ask that you keep your eyes on the project because we don’t want the children to suffer any further they have been thru a lot and we don’t trust the administration., the education minister he’s full of hot air.
Very good CIBC. Way to go! I was somewhat fed-up at a certain time of seeing EC.1,000 donation from CIBC making headline in the media.

Mr. St. Jean, Sir, be thankful to our God for receiving this donation on behalf of our Schools–especially the named School for this donation. Be sure that it will be used as it is donated for–that is what God expects for the gifts He gives to us–spiritually or physically, for His glory.
Mr. Stephen Lander, Sir, God’s will be done; I now live in Toronto Canada, but I do not wish to die here; therefore hope tells me I will be back home, in Dominica, not too long from now, to live my last years in the world there. Thank you for the information, which I will need when I am there. Happy New to all!
