Community project to enhance life in Cochrane

Residents of Cochrane will soon see an improvement in their water and electricity supply as a community project on a secondary road in that area continues.

The project began last September to repair the road in an area call “Zacolie.”

Project Coordinator, Loftus Durand, told DNO that utility companies DOWASCO and DOMLEC are on board with the project.

The area has received a water supply line from DOWASCO and DOMLEC has installed new electricity poles.

“Right now we have gotten the supply line from DOWASCO, so we are also putting the necessary pipeline so that when the project is done the area will be upgraded in terms of the water quality,” Durand noted.

He said residents in the area have always complained of low water pressure since the DOWASACO main line was far from their homes, but all this will change.

“The pressure of the water will be greatly enhanced because each household in that area will be connected much closer to their home from where it is now connected,” Durand explained.

He noted that the new DOMLEC poles will enhance the power supply and lighting in the area.

“So when that project is done in terms of proper lighting and more efficient electrical supplies, that also will be upgraded,” Durand noted.

The project has largely been a community-based one with residents buying material with their own money, however there has been some contribution from the government of Dominica.

In an earlier interview with DNO, Durand had said residents have spent some $25,000 from their own pockets for the project, however the overall cost is about $100,000.

Right now, he said, 200 yards of tarish and 400 bags of cement are needed to complete the project.

Will a sense of community ever return to Cochrane or DA as a whole? Only when people stop being so selfish, greedy and thieving …….and God only knows when that is.
