Contract for ‘lot two’ of Cathedral project signed

Bishop Gabriel Malzaire signing the contract

The contract for “lot two” of the Roseau Cathedral roof repair works has been signed, facilitating the commencement of work on that project.

The signing took place at the Bishop’s House on Wednesday between the Diocese of Roseau represented by Bishop Gabriel Malzaire and Dave Jacob Managing Director of Green Engineering.

The removal of asbestos-containing roof tiles aspect of the project is being carried out during the summer break and is expected to end on July 31, 2012.

Bishop Malzaire has expressed concern about funding for the overall Cathedral Project, estimated to cost some EC$8 million.

To date fund raising efforts have reportedly yielded only $3.6 million of that amount.

“We now have used EC$2.8 million of what we have and the work has just begun so it means that the process of fund raising has to continue,” the Bishop said.

Editor’s note: A spokesperson for the project has explained that the figure of $2.8-million is the balance of funds available now, not the amount used.

those so- called non catholic christians that are hiding behind false names to give catholics mepwee about out 8 million dollar renovations. I tell u too “HUSH YOUR MOUTHS, U AINT NO WHAT U TALKING ABOUT”. The catholic church is in need of the renovations to remove the asbestos from the roof, the pillars of the church has no steel. the church is unsafe for worshipping. why put our followers at risk. NObody complains when the non-catholic church put one tenth of their salary as tithe so the pastors can drive expensive ride and build big houses.

      @ new york

We are the mother church, as members. Dominican associations in N.Y. and elsewhere, have fundraising for nearly everything. They could have a fundraising for the Church such as a bake sale etc., throughout the year, no exception in Dominica. Every cent counts. God will bless us immensely for supporting His Church which spiritually benefits us.

we are being begged here to “second collection” when the high riders in rome fly on private jets, ride in limousines, eat caviar and more. why is the vatican sooooo rich whilst we are being begged to scrape milk from stone.

when will it end, this is quite similar to colonialism.

      @ guest

Prior to making such a comment as a Catholic and if you are a genuine one, you should first find out if Rome is aware of it, was told about it and if help was offered. Too often some people make comments without first thinking and praying to God for discernment.
As a Catholic, I would never make such a statement. Your comments do not depict that of a genuine practicing one who gives generously. Whenever you think and talk, consider that God hears you.
Dominican Catholics must help the Church for they are the beneficiaries more so than those who reside abroad. The practicing Catholics who reside abroad are obligated to give to the Church in their parish. They do give many times throughout the year, not only on Sundays but for many other services such as Share Life and Mission work, some of which are also sent to outside countries. They are asked to give generously. We have our personal obligations and we can only give so much.
I said to someone if only I would win a lottery and a certain amount I would donate the rest of the funds which the DA Catholic Church needs to complete this important work. The thought and willingness are present.
God depends on all of us, not only if we win a lottery but to give what we can afford. He knows what we can afford.
St. Paul said – Generosity in Giving – “Who has more do not necessarily have more. Who has less do not necessarily have less.” He also said, “…For God loves a cheerful giver.”

@Truth and Justice, if it is so good to give and given is a very good thing, then guest is correct, why is the more fortunate ones such as the ones in Rome not give more. You make absolute no sense. Why wouldn’t Rome know about it. They are chief/head of the Catholic religion and they are not aware of what is going on with their brothers and sister outside of Rome? I think the first place the Roseau Cathedral should turn to is Rome. Is the Roseau Cathedral on the Vatican’s budget? If not that’s a shame….

If not all of it but at least some of it. I know someone in DA who gave a few hundred dollars, cheerfully without counting the cost and the person said to me that more will be given. They can all do their part.

Matthew 18:20 “Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am among them”.
It is also said Render your heart not your garment.
I am not against fixing, building or renovating the House of the Lord…BUT…if you only come up with $3-$4 Million…why do we want to do a $8 million renovation??????
The church teaches us to be humble but the teachers did not seems to get that message.
In this hard economic times an $8 million burden on the backs of your followers????
“It is easier for a camel pass through the eyes of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter into Heaven” that is what the bible said…..But it seems today you HAVE to be a rich man to go to church!!!!

That is such a silly comment! Bascially they should let the roof of the church cave in and potentially hurt people? This is a hazard that needs to be fixed. They are not talking about building a mega church! They are talking about repairs to an insitution that like it or not is a part of Dominica’s history. Some of us are so blinded by “religion” that we cannot see the forest from the trees!

        @ Reader

This person who calls himself ‘no disrespect’ quotes from the Bible without understanding a thing. The Bible teaches us about such people. No doubt, this could be a fallen away Catholic who goes to some other Church which Our Lord Jesus Christ did not establish.
The same Holy Bible that their leaders stole/took from the Catholic Church and interpret the words to suit their warped and morbid mentality, they use it against the Church. Is this not something? While they ae dying and on the Day of Judgment they will find out their error. God is patient!

      @ No Disrespect

You speak as one who is not a Catholic, a non-practicing one and a fallen away one.
Our Lord would say to someone as you, “Are you without understanding?”
You make no sense. You are not a baby or a small child who needs every thing spelt out and explained to you. Utilize your common sense if you have any. Do you not see the size of the Church? Do you not know the year it was built? Time and weather takes its toll on buildings. If the Church is to continue standing it definitely needs to be repaired. Do you need someone to open your eyes and mind to this?
