Dominica Lions Club celebrates anniversary today

Lion President Louisiana Dubique with charter and life member, Joseph Liburd

The Dominica Lions Club celebrates its 43rd year anniversary today March 15, 2011.

Since the Club’s chartering in 1968, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community, such as Bus Shelter Refurbishment, donations to local public institutions and needy individuals, feeding programmes of elderly and homeless among others.

One of the Club’s most noteworthy projects is the construction of the building which currently houses the workshop for the blind and also serves as its Den (meeting place).

Dominicans will also associate the club with its Annual Carols by Candlelight. Proceeds from past fundraising events have gone to scholarships for needy students, donations of groceries and other necessities to the less fortunate, assisting in medical expenses of citizens in need.  The Club currently is undergoing a reading project at Roseau and Goodwill Primary schools where Lion Sonia Hill, a former school teacher and principal, assist on a weekly basis with reading lessons for 4th and 5th graders.

According to Lion Louisiana Dubique, President of the Club, “We are proud of our Club’s 43 years of service to the community. The Lion Club members thank everyone who contributes to this important work. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community.”

The Dominica Lions Club has 31 members and meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Workshop for the Blind on Federation Drive, Goodwill.

Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. For more information or to get involved with the Dominica Lion Club, please contact Lion Esther Shillingford at 295 9008 or visit our page on Facebook:  Dominica Lions
