Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Intelligence Division has ranked Dominica among the top ten best cost effective Caribbean and Central American countries of the future.

Dominica was ranked at number eight, right on the heels of St. Lucia which was ranked at number seven. St. Vincent and the Grenadines was the only other OECS country to be ranked. That country was ranked at number three.

The entire list is as follows:

Rank        Country
1               El Salvador
2               Trinidad and Tobago
3               Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
4               Dominican Republic
5               Belize
6               Montserrat
7               Saint Lucia
8               Dominica
9               Guatemala
10              Curacao

FDI is a British media group and the Countries of the Future shortlists are created by an independent collection of data by the fDi Intelligence division across 31 Caribbean & Central American countries.

    people,

After reading through this report, I must say I have serious reservations about this report on a whole.

For example, we can see they have different categories they base their report on, however what is not available in the report is the criteria use to determine what category in one country is better than that of another country.

To emphasize my point, my work deals in the countries of Aruba, Curacao, St.Maarteen,Turks and Caicos and the three other Dutch Overseas territories of Saba, Bonaire and St.Eustatius. I travel to these countries constantly, and I can tell you without a doubt that there is no way the infra structure of Curacao is better than that of Aruba. Also the infra-structure of Antigua and Barbuda is better that that of Puerto Rico.

Are you people kidding me.I would like to know how these people undertook this study.

    Another point worth noting:

Guadeloupe ranked number three and even Barbados made the list in business friendliness. ……Hello…

Even on this website was a number of comments made sometime ago about the attitude of the business community of Barbados when it come to being friendly to customers…especially coloured customers.(I am not trying to be racially motivated here)

The same attitude is rampant on the French overseas territories. On St.Barths for example, if you are a coloured individual… they treat you like your no body even if you have money to spend.

Let us take a look at internet user per Capita. As a computer network manager, the major ISP provider in the north are from Puerto Rico and via the French Territories:Guadeloupe, and this reports says that countries such as Lucia and SVG has a higher internet user per capita than countries such as Puerto Rico.
This is laughable and seriously flawed.

They need to come better than that.

So I am jot taking this report at face value. To me it has numerous inaccuracies.

I agree 100%, especially when comes to Barbadians being friendly I don’t think so they are the most unfriendliest people of all the caribbean islands. :?:

    • January 31, 2013

I have studied in Barbados on more than one occasion. Travelled to the island too many times for conferences, workshops, holidays and for medical purposes. You will find the not so friendly Barbadian like the not too friendly Dominican; but when it comes to business they are very professional and friendly. Never had any problems. Some people form their personal expectations of others and therefore behave in ways that cause these expectations to be fulfilled.

    FDI’s Criteria for Cost effectiveness:

Off course Dominica would be placed on that list: EASY TO SELL OUT …. THE ORDINARY LOCAL BUSINESS PERSON AND I MEAN REALLY LOCAL DON’T STAND A CHANCE WE ALL KNOW THOSE WHO CAN:

    Cost effectiveness
    • Cost of registering property
    • Cost of dealing with construction
    permits
    • Total tax rate, percentage of profit
    • Office costs
    • Minimum wage
    • Room rate for four-star hotel
    • Cost to export
    (Information collected by fDi Benchmark)

we need local financial institutions to enable more locals to invest in the development of Dominica….we want as locals to be a larger part of the driving force behind our development. let Dominica be indebted to Dominicans for the development of Dominica. That is the only way we can curb the assimilation of Dominica by foreign entities under the guise of Development aid. this to me is a hopeless request, as most locals and the government are dead set to sell the island piece by piece.

    Best Infrastructure List
    Best Business Friendliness List
Best for Quality of Life List (I was shocked)
    Best FDI Strategy List
    Best Human Resources List

so really what this means…. when the powers that be diminish others… they will certainly come n diminish our resources at very low spending cost… this is of no benefit to us but to investors who may want to come and take advantage…. remember we were ranked 10 least populated… so there’s supposedly many opportunities available to those with money

    • WIKILEAKS
      September 1, 2011

Moouth, this is very basic economic. Production and cost of labour. With the new Geothermal on stream, we will be well poised to harness our new potential to be a manufacturing power house in the Caribbean.

So lets Dream big for DA and not shoot down everything we see good coming our way.

Don’t be another lennox linton, Angelo Alleen kind of person

There is much more to life than this constant negativity.

      • 1979
        September 1, 2011

 wiki u make me laugh, though we DO see eye to eye with regard to the manufacturing bit. please ensure with all the BIG DREAMS….. these areas are taken into consideration.

        1. practicality
        2. reality
        3. local ownership
        4. that foreign investors make significant contributions to Dominica’s’ treasury. be it tax or whatever for the use of our resources.
        5. that no outrageous concessions are given.
        6. please don’t make us give away our prime properties to foreigners let them LEASE!
        7. please ensure that the maleweh Dominicans who have good business ideas can gain financial support to see the materialization of there venture.

in other words, please ensure that Dominica, and Dominicans. get what they deserve. we know we are never the lucky ones in any deals being struck by ehhhemmmm we all know the rest….. please don’t let us wake up one day and have to pay to access the beautiful things that we once were free to enjoy in our homeland…. please don’t render us unable to acquire any good piece of property because it all bought up by New Yorker’s and fortune 500 companies…

we all know your family will come out good, when the investing taking place….. but don’t be a crab, please think of other Dominicans and their families as well. i know some of you don’t feel anything as long as you’re not in the hot water…

that is the big secret that they want to put over our eyes…..only a few Dominicans Going to be enriched by these “investments” when these foreign investors drop anchor in Dominica
they just going to be suck suck sucking!!!! If we are smart as Dominicans. we will ask the government to start supporting LOCAL INVESTORS AND PEOPLE WITH INNOVATIVE IDEAS, ASSIST THEM IN GETTING FUNDING TO PROMOTE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INVESTMENT….
BUT I THINK POWERS THAT BE ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT…..AND MOST OF US ARE SLEEPING RATHER THAN TENDING TO OUR COUNTRIES AFFAIRS. WE WANT TO SIT DOWN AT RAZE EACH OTHER WITH CHAT….THAN PRESSURE THE GOVERNMENT TO ACT FOR THE TRUE EMPOWERMENT AND ENRICHMENT OF THE LOCAL CHICKEN.

exactly mouth of the south. when will the cycle stop. developing countries let western and asian investors come in deplete the natural resources ruin the economy then move on to the next place leaving the country just as poor as it was before the investors ever came. if we are to grow we have to invest from within like the japanese did after wwii or like the chinese. \

it just shows that there are traitors within Dominica itself…..whats wrong with the persons comment. if you thumb it down in disagreement… where is your rebuttal??? some people are just plain jack#&&es. GO BACK AND GET SOME TERTIARY EDUCATION… IF EVEN THAT CAN HELP YOUR BROKEN MIND AT ALL….

HEY HEY HEY WAIT A MINUTE!!……..the only areas I see Dominica Rated here is under cost effectiveness (cheap labor) and naturally if u getting cheap labor that is going to increase your profit percentage….this doesn’t spell good for Dominica, unless the investing company has a GENUINE interest in helping the people of Dominica.
