Dominica’s economy to grow 1.5 percent in 2012: Report

Total GDP in Dominica is projected to grow by 1.5 percent in 2012, up from an estimated 0.9 percent in 2011, according to a report from the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The country’s GDP grew at 0.9 percent in 2010 as well, according to ECLAC.

I had a chance to read through it. If this is true then one has to question the situation in Dominica on the ground. It is one thing to have numbers on a sheet of paper and the other to address the plight of the poor man on the ground. I am beginning to think or conclude that we have a serious distribution issue in Dominica. The wealth circulates in the hands of the wealthy and the middle class and poor only get the crumbs from the master’s table. When will that change?
I have a solution. It is an Islamic solution which would really close the gap. Barack Obama has echoed these sentiments as well. Let us apply the yearly tax on the rich of the 2.5% giving of their wealth to the poor. For e.g Digicel, LIME, Dowasco, Astaphans etc, ask yourself if these multi million dollar companies would give off 2.5% of their wealth to the poor how significantly lives would be increased in Dominica. I think for a small country if we are serious it would reduce poverty in Dominica significantly.
To have an option like this tells me you do not understand poverty and wealth and shows lots of ignorance on the matter.You know opinions are the cheapest commodity everyone has an opinion it is very sad.
The age old believe that taking from the rich to give the poor will somewhat eliminate poverty has never worked and never

Irrespective of what you want to quote or say, those who live in Dominica, execpt you and your ilks know that we are plummeting downwards.No jobs, no money,high unemployment,poor social services,large debt burden,poor and corrupt governance, a decline in agricultural output,etc are among the many things blighting Dominica.Growth. Hello folks, we do not have an economy. What we have is a huge trade deficit and what we are exporting is a joke. What I want to know is where is the money coming from that we use to import.
After carefully analysing what is happening in my lovely country,noone can convince me that the economy is buoyant, neither can anyone convince me that it will grow by more that at least 0.5% anytime soon under this regime.Growth is a quantitative concept,an increase in real per capita GDP. What is going to stimulate this growth,when we are not producing.Is it the underground economy?
This regime has sown the seed of laziness in the population, and we are reaping its deadly fruits now. The economy will remain stagnated for a long time because this regime failed to do what it had to do years ago. Up to this day we have not truely diversified this economy. In fact we have decimated/obliterated the agricultural sector, no manufacturing,the service industry is struggling,the private sector has people leaving in droves. In fact there is a recolonisation of Dominica taking place in broad daylight and we are day dreaming. These are the realities confronting my country, but the ordinary joblow man is oblivious to these realities, and the cabal is keeping them ignorant,so that they can perpetuate in power, maintain the status quo, and live like monarchs of all they survey. OH HOW MUCH I CRY FOR DOMINICA,AND MY PEOPLE.

1.5 GDP?
Here is one formula for calculating gdp (ref. Wikipedia):
GDP = private consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports − imports)
Private consumption – will Dominicans have more disposable income to increase consumption?
Gross private investment: Are companies increasing their investment in machines etc, more new houses etc expected to be built in comparison to this year?
Government spending: government spending expected to increase?
Export-Imports: Now we know this last part is a big negative value.
I can’t see the first and second part changing that much. I guess the key is in government spending (more loans)
And our Net property income from abroad is $ ZERO $0.00…! But both you and me know that very few of the bloggers will understand that. IT IS SHAMEFUL REALLY.

We all know these figures were fabricated and far from reality. How much of that growth is from agriculture? How much from manufacturing? Service? Let us see some numbers. Some us know what gdp is about. You can fool all the people some time but you can’t fool all the people all the time.
Instead of posting such a useless piece DNO could have considered an editorial on the anniversary of the G.O.N Emmanuel case.After all this is a national and far reaching issue.
I’ve also notice that DNO selection of news from the Q95 operatives. DNO did not touch the Isidore questions at all. Again the questions posed to Isidore are of national interest and are question not allegations. This is not an attack on DNO but just observation. It is interesting that from the same Q95 show DNO printed Linton’s annoucement of his decision to contest elections but opted not to talk about the very interesting questions to Isidore.

You are being deceptive. You are not telling the whole truth although your point is taken. That would be the equivalent of one and a half penny PER DOLLAR. $1.50 per $ioo.oo). An employee making $2,000.00 per month would get $30.00 increase. An employer with 10,000 employees would dish out an extra $300,000.00 each month. In poor agrarian economies like ours, that would be a burden to dish out.
But in terms of the economy, I agree with you that 1.5% is small. Bear in mind that many nations are in recession and wish that they had any positive growth.

I know that DLP has killed agriculture,it has killed manufacturing,in the private sector it seem as if many businesses are teetering on the brink.Meanwhile the government has created a lazy and mendicant society,where young and able bodied men are women are grovelling to the PM to stretch their hands out for money.How is the growth going to come about? I am not being political but just pragmatic. The article is just an obvious attempt to mislead or deceive. If the article is going toi lie the least they could have done is to provide some fake data.
Tjhe reality of the situation is that we cannot expect growth under the conditions that exist in Dominica. A country who for the last 10 years depended on external assistance,no growth in Tourism, Agriculture on a rapid decline, manufacturing down, local employment from construction at it’s worse, import bills is more than triple the export earnings. With these existing condition how can we forecast growth when there are no leading growth indicators.
It seem to me that the Tony Astaphan chronic deception is the order of the day in our country. Unless we accept the truth we can never seek amends. What a sad situation- it hurts to think that we are supposedly a more educated people yet we allow ourselves to be fed a daily supply of filth and ignorance.

Stop your ignorance. The ECLAC is an independent body under the auspices of the UN and thus have no “dog in the fight” as it relates to partisan politics in DA.
Whereas the ECLAC reviews the numbers provided by Dominica to inform its report, these economists strive for balance in the data they scrutinize and that they report on. Think about it, what interest would the agency have in skewing such senstitive findings?
Stop being jaundices for once. And help your country in any way you can. Declare “New year, new” for the love of country.
