Four milion dollar fire station for Melville Hall

Melville Hall Airport at night

An EC$ 4.4 Million dollar Fire station for the Melville Hall airport is to be commissioned later this month.

It is said that the new State of the art station, when completed, will be the most advanced on Island, equipped with a forensic Lab, conference room, a ten thousand gallon water storage tank, living quarters for both male and female officers, and a gym.

Officials are anticipating that the new state of the art facility will encourage productivity on the job.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of national Security, Immigration and labor, Nicholas Bruno says the new fire station will also serve neighboring communities.

“we are hoping that the new facility will redound to the benefit of our fire officers, the design is such that it brings added comfort to the employees, it will provide opportunities for On the Job training (OJT), it is a building that will encourage people to come to work if you consider the circumstances prior to the construction of the new facility you’ll understand.” Bruno said.

He says the new station will address several other concerns expressed by the officers.

I do n not meant to sound negative, but, why the 4 million dollars fire station? To put out what? We barely have enough planes flying in and out of Dominica, yet they are willing to spend that amount of money building a fire station? Shouldn’t they focus on the AIRPORT itself? Why is their priority screwed up? I am confused!!

I sincerely pray that all the money will go to the fire house and not in political supporters pockets. The culture of BOBOL is alive and well in Dominica

If it is going to be “COMMISSIONED next month that means it is going to be put to use so therefore it is already built so where does the”BOBOL” come in?

no its not everyday my dear but what about domincans that want to come in and other people…it doesnt matter whether if is a 100 persons coming in everyday the whole point is that we need one!!! all other places have and we dont have dominica is too small to be in all that debt! It is clear to see what the country needs in order to develop! If you cannot see it then I dont know! DOMINICANS NOT TALKING BECAUSE TALK OR NOT ITS STILL THE SAME. SKERRIT AND HIS FAMILY WELL SET. RIGHT NOW IS US THE CITIZENS THAT HAVE TO CHECK OURSELVES. ITS I KNOW SOMEBODY THAT KNOW SOMEBODY THAT CAN HELP SOMEBODY AND THAT SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE.

      • October 7, 2012

Hello, isn’t that what the International Airport should do for us? Not only for Ross students, Tourism on a whole. International flights may land daily, hundreds of passengers may visit daily, not to mention employment and revenue. Of course we have to promote what we have, but whom are you promoting to, the residents of Dominica? I’m in favor of building an International Airport because, to begin with, when visiting home I would not have to change planes, overnight in a hotel, and the airfare will be cheaper. Do you realize the reason people DO NOT travel to Dominica unless it is necessary is mostly because of the airport and the roads? Whatever needs to be done to improve and benefit the Island I think should be done, quickly.

Any facility that improves the lives of citizens as well as commerce is welcomed! Please I beg the government invest in an airport / jet strip that will improve air access to the nature Isle.

    • October 7, 2012

Homeboy, I fully agree. We will never move FORWARD if much needed improvements are not made.

As much as I respect this gov’t for what they’v done in D’a compared to Mama dem, I must admin they wasted $100 mil on this airport when they could av just build an int’l airport, They couldn’t put politics aside…and now Ralph Gonzalves laughing at them. lol lol – a Joke dat man!

    • October 7, 2012

Ericx, I agree with you in part. Although the airport needed repair, the Government could have started the process for the International Airport. What I saw, in my opinion, is still not the repairs that should have been done. I did not see changes as changes should be.

More wated money at Melville Hall. I am happy for the Marigot and surrounding communities. However, any dollar that is spent at that airport without an extension and ralignment of that runway is a complete waste of tax-payers money.

But Dominica is a smart place…lol Top of the Line Fire Station…but a low end Airport in Terms of High Scale Airline Activity…Also their are no Passenger Commercial Jets into Melville Hall…LOL

The chatter around is to build a Jet/International Airport as the way Forward….So the Cat comes in First place in Dominica always…LOL LOL

Dominican Policy Makers are so Brilliant…lol lol

All of that four million, four hundred thousand dollars should be going into the cost of the building of an International Airport.

No matter what we do to it, no matter how much we spend, we can reconstruct every building at Melville Hall Airport, it will not make any difference.

That will not cause the Airport to transform into an International Airport anytime soon.

We are wasting money, every one (1) cent spent on Melville Hall Airport is like flushing it down the toilet!

    Four (4) Million?????????????????? Interesting

  28. Satelite
    October 4, 2012

I may be wrong but what I can understand from this, is that the new station will facilitate a welcoming working environment for officers. Is that all?, or is it in order to accomodate better response and service to airlines and neighbouring homes when construction is completed?

Is the facility a proactive thought since we are searching for more airlines to make use of the airport in the near future, since air access is on the front burner for Dominica.

  29. October 4, 2012

A fire station at the Melville Hall Airport is a start for the much needed improvements. I hope this is not just talk because, to begin with, the Island will not move forward without improvements at the airport.

    • October 4, 2012

That is true and like you I hope it is not just talk but the we will be seeing some action real soon the Airport needs a good and fully equip Fire Station.
I hope the next step will be a proper Hospital also.

As long as it does cost EC$4.4 million. Usually you can halve the amounts for the real cost and the rest goes who knows where.
