Government of India seeks greater cooperation with Government of Dominica

Indian High Commissioner to the OECS Malay Mishra

The Government of India is seeking to increase cooperation with the Government of Dominica in several key areas of development.

Indian High Commissioner to the OECS His Excellency Malay Mishra has confirmed plans by the Indian Government to continue providing scholarships to Dominican students.

The High Commissioner was speaking to reporters at a press conference last week.

“Earlier, we were giving five slots. These are short term training programmes entirely funded by the Government of India including air travel costs, local hospitalities, stipend for the courses, everything is taken care of by India. We have about 50 top ranking institutes of India providing courses, through the year, to about 2,000 trainees from various parts of the world,” he said.

He continued, “We have now increased the slots giving more scope for training facilities to nationals of the Commonwealth of Dominica in India in our apex bodies there in various areas: management, personnel development, accounting, bureau of standards, and climate change even in crime prevention. We have education, SME’s so we have asked the concerned ministries to kindly send more and more trainees. We are prepared to even augment the quota of short term scholarships that we give under this programme.”

Meantime there are also plans by the Indian Government to assist Dominica’s Ministry of Health in the provision of pharmaceuticals.

“India today, is one of the most well known and most important producer and exporter of pharmaceuticals in the world. Generic medicines, which India produces, are the third largest in the world to date. we export to the tune of US$ 12-billion and we would like to also see how best our Indian pharmaceutical products could come to Dominica but at the same time, come to the larger OECS and CARICOM market,” he said.

For all those with questions, please go to the Indian High Commision page and read all you need to know about the agreements and everything else. This is not a new thing – The High Commissioner ws visiting Dominica for the FOURTH time. Technicians have been working with the Ministry of agriculture and the Technical Cooperation will continue. Dominica has the opprtunity to indicate the special areas where they need training for nationals.

I hope we will have immigration control also with the co-operation MOU.
Remember India is an overpopulated country like China. We don’t want
an influx of migrants because we are unable to employ our people as it
    is already.

That’s only in the urban areas, India has large tracks of land in the rural areas which can be developed to support their population better

I am sorry, but India is over populated- over all. 1.1billion people, and they will migrate to greener pastures outside of India. My Indian friends and colleagues are always amused at the lack of visa requirements to visit Dominica.

It is a great opportunity however to enter into this agreement. Many things to learn on both sides, and possibly bring some economic and innovative ides to D/ca

While commending the Government of India on this initiative, it would greatly benefit Dominica if the “slots” could include Mechanical Engineering, particularly if emphasis is given to practical training. We do not necessarily need PhD’s but we do need skilled engineers.

As well as being an important producer and exporter of pharmaceuticals, India has emerged as a major engineering entity. In particular, it has companies specialising in machinery for small to medium scale agri-businesses. This is the type of equipment Dominica desperately needs to revolutionise its agricultural sector.

it,s all good these countries want to have ties with Dominica. It is because they realise the potential in Dominica, these Phamaceutical Companies from India, see Dominica as a haven for drug production, soon all our herbal plants will be a thing of the pass.See how a lot of our insignificant wildlife are slowly being eaten by the influx of the chinese who eat anything, and see everything here good to go, and they don’t respect our hunting season, due to the sweet deal they got. However any help we can get we need to take, but we should not sell this country shot.i guess Jerry will be eyeing the MOU. Yes we do need more Mechanical and machinery training for the youts. we need more tecnical persons here to train the youts on island.let the help be visible.

“Further, I find it really difficult to comprehend with a declining job market in our country, how are these returning graduates from India are going to contribute to our country? Will they become Brain drain and seek employment in other countries?”

It is better to have become educated than not to …so if India is providing an under privilege kid from Timbuktu an education, kiddo run for it. Maybe this kid might become a doctor, astranaut, artist, sportsman whatever, anywhere around the world

    TWISM….THE WORLD IS MINE

While I am all for educating our students and thanks to the Indian government, how much of the $12 billion export of Pharmaceutical can Dominica extract from India in the form of trade? There needs to be a concerted effort for these countries to accept something from Dominica in term of exports for Dominica to be able to afford what they plan to sell to us. Further, I find it really difficult to comprehend with a declining job market in our country, how are these returning graduates from India are going to contribute to our country? Will they become Brain drain and seek employment in other countries? With the many imbalance of trade to date, Dominica stands to be indebted to multiple countries. I want to see Dominica progress, but not to have countries looking for new markets and have the advantage during negotiations stiff our country and uproot foreign currency and we cannot get anything in return. I don’t care which government is in power this can be a serious problem. Finally, if Dominica is going to get generic drugs from India we need to know whether these drugs will be of a high quality and affordable for the common man. We need to ask these questions to our leaders/Indian representative in Dominica.

      April 20, 2011

Your made the point, should we sit by and wait for the many job opportunities to come by and then send our kids to India and elsewhere to educate themselves? You remind me of the several farmers in Dominica who refuses to grow anything unless there are markets available, just to find out that by the time the crops are ready for harvest, the markets have long gone.

Do you believe that the Indians will manufacture pharmaceuticals only to ship to Dominica and other OECS countries? Are you saying that the quality will be lower than that obtained eslewhere?

Bet you must be educated from the University of Q95fm.

Mr/Miss Observer, did I sound political to the extent when I mentioned (Irrespective of which party is in power we need some form of trade to India to afford these drugs)? Our country has so many experts and followers rather than independent thinkers it makes for strange comments like yours. Take a look at Roger Burnett’s post above which I totally agree with what he/she said about where India has it strong points to assist Dominica develop its Agri-business; this is the kind of contribution I was hoping my comments would invoke not your narrow minded horse with a brindle view. We need to understand that if we don’t ask or even question things how can government/India et al know what would make Dominica more competitive. Therefore, go back and look at my focal point of the comments made and you will see it is against the back-drop of Dominica capability to generate revenue given the last financial report. Finally, we can lie to ourselves all we want, but data don’t lie and if you don’t care about simultaneously getting the country economics in line with education I am. Thanks for your comment.

The link below hints clearly to the same concern I have for India’s SUDDEN interest in Dominica. I may be wrong, however the article to which this link relates strikes-up some “food for thought”.
When you read…have an open mind to the recent issue Dominica faced with the “diabetic test strips”? hmmmm?
