Minister for Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs, Dr Collin McIntyre has announced that about 315 Dominicans are expected to be employed within the next few weeks under the government’s National Employment Program.

The program was launched on Monday and is geared at assisting unemployed college and university graduates in gaining employment, training and experience.

A trade and employment expo, now going on at the Windsor Park, forms part of the initiative.

“The National Employment Program being launched here today consists of several different employment initiatives including on the job training and mentorship program, community development employment initiatives, graduate internships, education mentorships, adult education work programs and marketing assistance programs,” McIntyre said during the launch of the event.

He added that the government will cover the employment cost of the interns for a one-year period and some will begin their internships this week.

“I am pleased to announce that 120 young people, who under the employment and small business unit, have completed apprenticeship programs in bartending, housekeeping, front desk operations, food and beverage services, culinary arts and creative manicure and pedicure will gain attachments this week,” he said.

In addition, within the coming weeks over 100 young people are expected to receive placements in various private sector organizations for job training, according to McIntyre.

“I am proud to announce that this week 45 university graduates will begin work within the public sector, statutory bodies and NGO’s … further a special program within the Kalinago Territorry will engage 10 graduates on agriculture, business and community development projects within the territory,” he said.

McIntyre pointed out further that the National Employment Program is not just a dream, but a reality.

“315 individuals will begin work within this week. A further 200 will be employed over the next few weeks as more opportunities become available and community development projects are launched,” McIntyre stated.

The minister revealed at the trade and employment expo over 70 local businesses are being represented.

“This expo is the key for job creation. We have over 70 local businesses represented here including our local manufacturers, health and wellness, financial services, ICT, agro producers, craft and jewelry among others. We encourage you to support our local businesses if we support local, we contribute to our local development and employment,” he noted.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well its very good that we are manufacturing thing in Dominica but what contacts we have to export things to places like the Virgin Islands. There are so many of us(Dominicans)in the Virgin Islands we can purchase all the food products that’s being manufactured in Dominica. Many of us are middle and upper middle class people in The VI so we must purchase our goods which in turn supports our people back home and help create employment.

Let me make this statement to everyone of you. Some of you people in Dominica are delusional.Come on open your eyes to see what is happening around you.

Whether it is UWP, Labour or Freedom; everyone of these political parties are corrupted and obsessed with their own personal self interest.

What did UWP did for the country when they were in power? Absolutely jack Sh…..t.

Did they create mass employment opportunities for the country? No…. all they did was look after themselves and their friends who supported them.

Let us not talk about the freedom party because they are an absolute waste of space.

The reason why this government is in power, is because there really isn’t a viable and credible opposition offering better alternatives. It is all talk, talk and more talk and no action.

They come up with all these ridiculous schemes and initiatives, but the first question is where are they going to find the money and resources to implement and sustain these gimmicks.

Historically those in power spend most of their time fending off accusations of corruption and mismanagement, yet soon as they are in opposition they turn around and do exactly what the previous opposition was accusing them of when they were in power. (Talk about the pot calling the kettle black)

These so called politicians in Dominica have no foresight or a visionary mandate to drive the country forward. They have no business acumen, and their so called initiatives are primitive and lacking long term sustainable substance.

They are just interested in lining their own and their friends pockets, so that when they are kicked out of office, their future needs are taken care of.

I am a proud Dominican living abroad but what I have seen whenever I come home makes me realise that these so called politicians in Dominica are ALL THE SAME.

Dominica will always be stuck in the dark ages.

Word around town is that the Trade Exhibition is a failure. To halt the slide, tricks of the last election needs to be revisited.Consequently prior to Christmas and carnival the seawoo must be very grand. My files contain all the plans I have seen and like a good patriot have chosen to tell Dominicans now.At least four of the bands which graced our Creole Festival last month, including Kasav and Montana will be invited to perform for free to all who are prepared to wear something RED. By the time you read this leak my computer will be taken by the authorities but fortunately all the drives will have been destroyed, thus protecting my sources.

I am at the stadium displaying my products, since Skerrit and his entourage pass on Monday morning only about 10 more people pass and not one buy a thing. Then in the afternoon hot sun in my tail, I had to run.
Please Mr. Prime Minister, declare a public holiday and order all Civil Servants and School children and your Red Army to go to the EXPO to buy, just as you did when you boycott the Boycott, because things are bad.
I going back there on Tuesday but if at twelve noon 5 people doh pass by my booth, I packing up and going about my business.
Imagine you have an EXPO with two cruise ships in town and not one tourist pass!
And as for jobs, those little cottage industries I see there can create any job for any body? Those people looking like they well want job themselves because what they doing cannot even pay them.
Now who organize this EXPO and put the poor people in that hot sun? Then open it at 9:00 a.m. to close at 5: 00 p.m.? So all you doh know people leaving work at that time? All you expect people to come to an expo during working hours?
I understand that the organizers are civil servants who work from 8 to 4 so thay were in no mood to go on to 8 o’clock because they not getting overtime.
Anyway, this EXPO is a PANICO, fellas seem to be panicking and the Pastor wife start to pray and this is what the vision reveal. Hold a EXPO, BRING IN THE idiots to make a big show, launch 500 jobs and pay the payroll for the employers for a year, by that time we call election, we win and we send those poor children back home for 4 more years.
    Well, Something is Happening!

Collin McIntyre, you and the other 15 incompetent, visionless, brain-dead and dishonest nincompoops must stop playing games with the rest of us. You all had 14 years to design a decent, sustainable, jobs creation programme for the suffering young people of this country, instead you guys embarked upon the most disgraceful, shameful, flagrant and egotistical abuse of state resources in the history of this country, for one reason and one reason alone, to create a culture of poverty whereby the victims of this diabolical system will continue to grovel and lay prostrate at your feet.

Oh, You mean there is money in the treasury to waste. How do you plan to sustain the these jobs in the long run when the economy is in recession? Think before you implement these plans.

The economy needs to be stimulated and agriculture is the way to go, then tourism. We need to be self reliant. I would respect the current administration more, if their actions were well thought out.

Disclaimer: I support neither the government nor the opposition. The 5000 jobs and the free education proposals cemented the fact that they are all the same, eager to gain public approval.

I understood approximately five hundred Dominicans were present at the Windsor Park Stadium in an effort to be selected for a job. Those who were successful at the Employment Expo must not only thank the Government but also Mr. Lennox Linton and the UWP. The DLP Government has been in office for fourteen years and it only took the Employment Symposium by UWP for the Government to realize the seriousness of having Dominicans put to work. The young people must also come to the realization that the UWP have saved them the embarrassment of having to walk up the steps of the Financial Centre looking for hand outs. I see this Employment Expo as a revised version of the Red Clinic.

There has never been a better time to own a business in DA. If I was there and owned any kind of business, I would be the first in line at that Trade and Employment and Exploitment and Exploitation and squandering tax payers money Expo….WAW!!! So if you have a business and you go to the Expo, Skerro dem going to pay some of your workers salary for a whole year? And people saying DA doe have money? I wonder how they going to decide which business gets the most money for its workers? Or which business going to get the most free labor? Can the workers choose their employer? If I have a farm planting fig, do I get some free workers, and government pay them for me please? I would thank you with a nice little “X” if you do that for me..OK? Never mind Red Clinic..
Here is how I suggest the businesses use their free labor: If your business creating a product with unlimited market, or something that is not perishable, you should use your free labor to increase your production and increase your revenue as a result. If there is no market for your product, you should take the free labor and Lay off those lazy ones you have been paying. LOL….You doe want to have people just goofing off…that is bad for business and for productivity in the long run…
In any case, if I was in government, I would suggest that the money be used differently. I would suggest that the money be used to build a large facility like a mall, where entrepreneurs could come in, lease space cheaply and open up their own beauty salons, barber shop, little restaurants and other small business that they can continue to support themselves well after election is over.
I hope Lennox and Thompson are paying attention to this mediocre effort and preparing to raise the bar.

“Items on display at a trade and employment expo at the Windsor Park”

You know I am the king of all idiots, so idiotic, I am wondering if we have a food processing plant in our country, and when I say a food processing plant, I mean something that processes perishables such as the meat, and crawfish, or lobsters we see on display.

If my hypothesis is correct that would mean we have plenty of livestock to butcher, in order to produce package meat, and lobsters. If I am wrong someone need to tell me I am wrong, and perhaps I am seeing bobble, may I have double vision, or tunnel vision for that matter.

Nevertheless, if the merchandize displayed, are imported products, then I must admit that someone in Dominica is playing a fools game with the rest of us!

When people are talking about job expo, that should have nothing to do with merchandize, of any kind; employers, or their representative should be present, and applications are handed out to people who are interested in the job they have to offer.

Application are submitted on the spot, and most of the time verbal interviews are given, some people are employed immediately, if they are qualified for the job.

On the other hand where it pertains to merchandise, you do that to attract buyers from other countries, and business operators within your country. You do that with the hope that you can create an export market for your products.

Even if the products I see on display are all produced in Dominica, the venue right now is not the appropriate place for that!

Worst of all if the products are all imported, some is trying to make a fools of the Dominica public.

All locally, manufactured, and process food, and merchandize should be on display at any exposition which involve a nation.

Why telemaque always commenting , you have no interest in Dominica or wesley. Stop commenting. NO ONE VALUES YOUR COMMENTs.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        December 3, 2013

Why do you want me to come home Mr. Wesley boy?

You are trying to influence me to come back into the mud, only to drink rum, and argue with you and the rest of the bush lawyers, doctors, and politicians in the village, and go back to catching crab to cook with coconut water, and dsheen bush and stalk to eat with roast breadfruit!

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Man, the kid is not prepared to subject myself to that sort of thing anymore for the rest of my life, beside whom in their right mind would want to return to a place that pre adventure, by the time they encounter their first heart attack; they die.

Haven’t you notice that the majority of people who go to the hospitals in our country always comes out feet first, and not breathing. I intend to help a few people (relatives) of mine financially when I can to the day I die, I have already wiled everything I worked for in my life to my junior, my son; and in my will I instruct him to ensure that he give to my sisters Marie, and Barbara a certain amount of money monthly, until they die.

Well, if you are from Wesley, you know that Barbara passed on last year, so she will never benefit, however, if I die today, my son will be there to help Marie, if he does not I will return from me grave and haunt him oui!

So, doh worry about me: if you want to know why I comment, it is because my commentaries are constructive, and I am not as coward as many of you. You people sit back; intimidated by the faces of the politicians, you accept every crap they throw in your face, you accept their lies as truth, you never challenge them, though you suffer in silent, and poverty; all you get from the politicians are a drink of rum and a smile, you enjoy that and become contented to call them your friend.

They, collects their pay cheque’s monthly, while you sit at home with your hands between your legs wondering where your next meal is coming from, maybe if you become out spoken as I am and challenge the politicians to do something constructive that will affect your life in a different way than it is right now you would not have the time at ask why I comment so often.

Don’t try to muzzle me kid, because you or no one can! There was a time I wrote comments on Cakafete, Dominicans advised Fred White the owner to block me, he refused; I took no chances I built my own Website, I kept it for more than twenty years, until late last year I closed it down.

And if needs be I can have one built within a week or so. Note: you may know Vidal Edwards, he is my nephew, grandson of Barbara he is an Computer Engineer, and one of his skill is building Websites, he resides in Antigua, and have a darn nice job there practicing his profession, all I have to do is call him and say to him build me a site according to what I wish it to do you see; so I am not easily contained.

Assuming you worry about retribution, or reprisals from the Dominica politicians, I have no fear of them, they cannot touch, nor harm me!

Windsor Park – National Stadium – same difference we all know where it is. That is not the point. Of most important is the fact that the Government is taking people for a fool. This is just dumb what Skerrit is doing.

    You know what these have no shame too – one day we doing better than the rest, the next day the economic crisis, then it is the fault of the opposition as they stayed out of parliament; then we had a who was paid $4000 a month to tell us that civil servants are not productive;
They said Carnival Cruise cut Dominica because of fuel , Skerrit then said is because villagers did not plan flowers; then Ian Douglas said that we had to put things in place for Carnival cruise to come back – lies after lies after lies.

Did they tell us why they all of a sudden decided to restructure the Passports scam even when those VATs were telling us that the Passport program is well managed. Tony ,Mervin were professing that the Euroeans gave our passport program excellent reviews. Why restructure a program that is so well managed? Guess what – the application for a visa free entry to the European countries with visa requirements hit the bump. So they are trying to now create the semblance that the passport selling is under control. Thus the reason they passed legislation to restructure the scam program remember the sudden money laundering act in parliament and soon after we found out that Dominica was black listed by the French. Again they said it was a lie and guess what they will say too that European Visa speed bump is a lie.

But lets hold our breathe and keep our toes and fingers crossed the timing of those initiatives kind of smells like fish. Elections or no elections lets wish our Government well for taking us to the next level??????????????????.

I thought this incompetent and lazy team in the Labour Powder Party, had criticized the “Job and Economic Forum”, held by the UWP RECENTLY. Now they are following with a clownish and preposterous MAR GEE, obviously contrived by the lazy and incompetent brains in the CORRUPTION PLAGUED LABOUR PARTY. How many jobs they will create, is not certain.
Mr Skerrit we want 5000 to 7000 jobs, and this will be provided by the UWP under the able and competent leadership of HONOURABLE lENNOX LINTON OUR PM IN WAITING.
After 14 years in power the most these GREEDIES have done is to feather their nests, and to hell with the poor man. SHAME ON YOU ALL, BUT THANKS GOD IT IS COMING TO AN END.

Alas, 5000 – 7000 Jobs in 3 years i think is that Lennox say he going to do. Some of us in Dominica are so ignorant. First of all, it will take any party at least 2 years to settle in as a new party: to make deplomat ties and break them also, to review policies and amend laws to suit their type of governance, but UWP supporters believing any thing they hear. In which country in this hard economic time (the whole world)can a government come before settling and create 5000 jobs in 3 years. Alas is really saz saz that following that party.

Can you believe that someone/people will be placed at e.g by Fort Young Hotel for training, etc and the Government will be paying them for service given to that hotel. This is unthinkable. Is the minister losing his head? They cannot create any thing and is looking for ready made. Just because they have taxpayers money, they want to squander. Anyone can see this is poor management. They do not let the taxpayers know how the money is spent and feel this is none of their business, plus they have some public servants assisting them with this. This is corruption to the highest level.God is watching. Men like Hitlet, Sadam Hossein, Chavez and others thought they would be here forever. ‘Every long rope has an end’. But who dem 120 young people going to bartend to, housekeep for, and serve food and beverage to, and where are they going to demonstrate their skills in culinary arts and creative manicure and pedicure???

Ok good for dem young people (if you tink so),,,

Garçon is food Dominica was designed to grow focus on a program both local, regional and maybe even international, for the marketing of non Genetically Modified Foods nuh as Dominica might be the only place on this earth dat still have naturally fertile soil and Monsanto doh have a monopoly on [yet],,,

The ministers are filling their pockets and you remain poor. Open your eyes and see what is happening. Give someone else a chance to see if they can do something better for Dominica. Three terms is enough for one set of people. They have overstayed their time. Tired eat dasheen alone, try something else, try yam.Dominica does not belong to one set of people. It is time for a change. Give others a chance to bring development in the country.

  46. December 2, 2013

This is absolutely ridiculous. So the government is going to provide employment opportunities in the field of bar-tending, housekeeping and creative pedicure and manicure for one year.

So what happens after the one has expired? I do not want to be perceived as being demeaning to these roles because someone has to do it, but is this the career path you would expect a university graduate to adopt?

Is this the best opportunities the government can come up with for these graduates?
And what about the non graduates and the long term unemployed who has no hope of finding a job?

Aren’t they of any social value to the government and the country?

It seem this so called initiative by this lazy and no foresight of a government is a political gimmick to dupe people into believing that the unemployment crisis is being managed and controlled.
This government should concentrate their so called efforts by trying to create an employment infrastructure and by attracting foreign industrial investors into the country.

That would be a good start. This laughable non-sense isn’t going to get anywhere.

yes, i am a business owner and I have become poorer because of this government. Thank God for DNO. IF we go to a public forum some of us would be axed and our business would close down because we have voiced our opinion. We are no longer free to voice our opinion because we are ruled by a dictator. If we voiced our opinion publicly, we would be victimized and our business would close down like Brizee’s Mart. You forget what happened to them. Give people the liberty to speak and you would hear things that this corrupt government is doing under cover. Some of them are no longer working in establishments and they are still drawing salaries where they once worked. Isn’t this corruption when an unemployed person could have this job?

I don’t know about the blogger you are responding to but I for one can boldly stand in the public and repeat what he said. Tell me when my dear friend, did a job mentoring programme and a badly thought out one at that, become a job creation programme. For 14 years and especially in the last 10 years
this government’s only concern was about their personal wealth creation. No thought was given to the needs of the people. Now that the opposition is showing that there is a different way they quickly rush to waste tax payers money, and once again this is not even for the benefit of those persons on the programme but rather to ease the burden on their friends in the business community who are struggling on this broken economy. Now go ahead take me to task for saying that.

@papa dom, i am saying this, because i have seen the big picture on the wall, when UWP asked for the boycot of the two major independence rallies, which were where the president elect would have been, the UWP supporters and leaders should have been outside the staduim in solidarity, presenting their peacefull demonstrative march, making their presents felt,no they chose not,in fact they displayed their cowardly act, masking behind the people, expecting them to carry out, their word of mouth, actions speak louder than words,in dominica that is what you all are about, more backs and no bites.

I will not throw out the baby with the bath water and so I will say that I am happy that the young people may get a little bit of cash every month for 6 months. Let us hold our breath on this.

While I am happy for the young people I also share some level of bitterness as we all know that this is just another one of this administration’s deception. These insidious acts is not just petulant but also insulting to the masses. Laborites know very well that this is another electioneering move to buy voters – stay in power by any means necessary. It would be malicious to suggest otherwise cause 14 years and unemployment had never been a priority to this maladministration

I need not go into the fallacies and “paper wall” nature of this rent a job scheme. What is so condemning is the fact that When concern people voice their concern about unemployment the government and it’s detractors tell us that it is world economy and nothing can be done but they were able to cook up a fake a$$ job renting scheme for 300 people.
The world economy is bad yet over the last 2 months we were promise 300, 400 and 500 jobs ) – jobs Reginald Austrie said was on it’s way and due to be in operation at the end of September. What has changed since August that now we can create 300 jobs in two months.

Now here is the greatest hypocrisy and con artist operation – The very same detractors who criticize Linton UWP plans to grow 5000 jobs in 3 years are now creating the impression that they can create 300 fobs in 2 months. Well from a linear perspective the con men are now demonstrating that they can create 5400 in three years. Do the maths laborites – I know you guys refuse to read. 300 jobs in 2 months =1800 jobs per year. That is 5400 jobs in 3 years. Less the 400 rental = 5000 jobs in 3 years.(lol)

  53. Francisco Telemaque

Collin, you all need to cut the crap, and do something constructive to create jobs, rather than talking crap about employment under national program.

Who the heck you believe you are fooling?

Last week you were asking where is the government of Dominica going to find jobs; this week you are taking employment. Since you have not created any new jobs, last week via new investments into any industry, by neither foreign, nor local investors, how come all of a sudden you have three hundred (315 ) fifteen new jobs available to spare?

This is madness; it would appear that you know your stupid remarks of last week lit a fire in the minds of the people, thus exposing your incompetence, and stupidity; so yo are trying to quench the burning fire, with some sweet sounding lies!

You need to remember that all of us Dominicans are not ignorant and gullible, to impress people with this talk of employment under national program or whatever you call in Dominica, is total nonsense. In the first place someone graduating from Dominica State college can only obtain an associate in science, or an associate in arts degree; we do not have a four year collage, and I do not think that such people have much to offer in the way of developing an existing business.

I read where some students are placed in a rum-shop, what can a graduating student learn from a rum shop?

Be realistic, and stop this political demagogy.

While the term “intern” may sound great to the uneducated, or people who does not know the meaning of the word and may be impressed by it, to those of us who have been intern in the past we only laugh at your cheap stupid political rhetoric, because if we are thinking in terms internship as it can be defined, we are talking about an advanced student, or graduate, usually someone in a professional field.

    That could include:

    .Medicine
    .Architectural Engineering
    .Electrical/Electronic Engineering
    .Law
    .Chemical Engineering
    .Mechanical Engineering
    .Building Engineering

There are other professions which require internship too, however, even if I am aware that there are bartenders schools some places; I doubt that any Dominican have as of yet gone to a university, or Dominica State College where they have majored in rum shop development, so if the story is true that some students are place in a rum shop to do intern, the world has already end in Dominica.

You people will continue to exists in your mythical world until it crumbles, and swallow you up!

This is a good programe to assist the young people by starting them of. Govt. can’t employ everyone and the world’s economy is moving slow. DA is no exception. – how are these people getting paid? Direct by Govt. or through their adoptive employers?
    – this scheme provides employers with free labour. What measures are in place to prevent employers off-loading people on their current payroll and replacing them with “free” replacements?
    – what recognized training schemes do these employers have in place? And what “certification” can those newly employed expect after their period of apprenticeship?
    – on what basis are prospective employers selected? After all they would be getting “free” labour at the expense of the public purse and the temptation to favour cronies and stalwarts is always there.
