Gov’t housing revolution continues

Houses under the government housing program
Houses under the government’s housing program

The construction of 60 apartment units in Elmshall and Bath Estate is progressing smoothly.

Foundation works have been completed at Elmshall while work is 40 percent complete at Bath estate.

The Bath Estate/Elmshall housing project demonstrates government’s commitment to provide adequate, affordable housing to the people of Dominica.

“Government intends to continue to work with our citizens to facilitate wherever and however possible, to ensure that every Dominican has an acceptable housing standard,” prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has stated.

The project, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2014, incorporates the construction of 36 units at Elmshall and 24 units at Bath Estate with provisions for proper landscaping and access roads.

The two and three bedroom apartment units are made possible through a soft loan from the People’s Republic of China and forms part of a wider urban renewal project which included the construction of the new State House and the new Dominica State College.

Housing is one of the key platforms of the Dominica Labour Party administration. Faced with large areas of substandard housing all over the island, government took decisive action and embarked on the Housing Revolution.

Millions have been invested in this important government initiative which has seen the construction of houses in Hillsborough Gardens, St. Joseph; the Kalinago Territory; Belle Vue Chopin; Savanne Paille; Chance, Portsmouth; Stockfarm and Grand Bay.

The Housing Revolution also includes a “Home Renovation and Sanitation Programme” where over twenty million dollars has already been spent directly impacting the lives of over two thousand people in almost every community across Dominica.

these guys dont even have a clu as to how to run a country muchless to address the social problems that we face from time to time. with all these million that have been spent over the last 10 years, why is the people so poor ? we should be a country at work in every sector, … we still see the red clinic as a way out. we have gotten so accustom to sub standard houseing and living lifestyle that not for a moment we feel that we cannot do better than that …… shame .. i pray to god i will work hard to build something that my kids will love and can play in the yard, not going down these deadly step with (5) pillars at 15 feet high will have family thinking when is the next brake leg on these step. what a shame. i love my P.M DOO.

What is urban renewal about these projects and the housing component in particular? Are the people in Roseau who are presently residing in the dilapidated house going to be the beneficiaries? How many jobs these projects created for Dominicans. This so called housing revolution is unsustainable to say the least. It is largely a means for this corrupt and incompetent government to abuse and misuse scarce state resources for political advantage. Who administer allocation of the building materials, certainly not the welfare department but the parliamentary reps of the labour party. The world over governments have been urged to be facilitator of housing and not a provider except for the indigent and very poor.
A true housing revolution would address issues of land distribution, registration and development, planning controls, impacts of rent control on investment in rental housing, private sector mortgage financing, foreclosure regulations, cost of construction relative to VAT, customs and port charges, and issues of this nature. Not politicians using state funds and land resources to give away to their supporters in order that they will retain their votes.
Labour must go it is hurting Dominica.

if less houses are being built then that means less jobs for electrician and plumbers also… so im assuming its the big contractor companies getting all jobs … what about little guys.. the rich are getting richer

Whilst I’m all for helping needy people I’m afraid the way we are going about this programme will create ghettos for the poor, stigmatizing, rather tan helping them. I think it would be better to disperse such people amongst the general population with the Govt. assisting with the payment of rent, based on a needs assessment, rather than concentrate our social ills in one place.
The way the world is, having an address in one of these settlements will give a negative impression, even in such simple matters as job applications and affect the confidence and aspirations of especially young people, who have ambitions for success.
We must do better than this.

These houses are built one on top of the other…Is it because the people are poor gov’t should build these houses in such a way that the children have no where to play? it is time for dominicans to know what is real politics ,ask for a plan from the politician who go all over the place and give out cement, galvanize and other things for a vote ,then after they are in power the voter continue sucking salt…these houses are rescue houses after disaster ..

That is good, but Dominica needs economic activity so people can build the house they want.
    Not gifts from th\€<
So many foolish people destroying the economy,It is no wonder we are lagging behind in the Caribbean.

    God bless the Chinese.

The steps are a hazard especially if they have children. I know many will say well they have to be thankful for what they get, but honestly, we should ask for quality at all times. Further more, the building code should not allow this.

What HOUSING REVOLUTION? With thousands of young people unemployed, dozens of contractors in trouble with overdraft debt, walking up and down looking for work, tradesmen idle, Chinese are fully employed on Dominica’s borrowed money from China, what is housing revolution about that?
The government claims to have spent millions of dollars on housing, yet the housing stock is worse than it was in 1999.
Check the records with Physical Planning, less houses are being built now than before Labour came to power.
The Government gives away millions of dollars worth of building material to people who do not have land to build and others who cannot build because they do not have the resources to and what they receive is insufficient to build, so what do they do? They sell the building materials and burn the money in, most cases, rum.
The Housing Revolution needs an depth analysis.
DNO are you prepared to publish a piece on the HOUSING REVOLUTION A GOOD IDEA BUT AN UNFORTUNATE SEED OF CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM AND INCOMPETENCE.”
I will not charge except that it will be copyright.

so that the main contributor to economic growth and development, that’s why the economy is in this state its in, building house for people, fine but that should not be your Main Act for expanding the economy because that’s unsustainable. Even a national airline is more sustainable. At-least you have ROSS students and all the US travelers who lose their flights due to Liat. They would be using the National Airline and this would be a sustainable contribution to the economy, by; creating jobs, adding to GDP,increase foreign exchange, create an avenue for fresh flowers to be exported to the US, add to government revenue and have a multiplier effect. Can the housing revolution do all these things? WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, WE IN PROBLEMS BECAUSE OUR MACROECONOMIC POLICES ARE SOOOOO WRONG.
