Gov’t in negotiations for Marriott Hotels in Dominica

marriotPrime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed plans of his government to have a Marriott Hotels & Resorts constructed in the north of the island.

He said at the Toucari Village feast on Sunday that negotiations are underway on the matter.

“The Marriott will also want to have a presence in the north of Dominica,” Skerrit said. “There are still negotiations taking place, so we continue to pray that those negotiations will be successful. So that not only Kempinski will be here and Hilton, but we will also have a Mariott Hotel in Dominica.”

The Prime Minister noted that great things are in store for the country.

A 160-room Cabrits Resort Kempinski is presently being constructed in the north of the island. It was also announced last year that Hilton Worldwide will be developing Tranquility Beach Resort in Salisbury. Both are being constructed under the island’s citizenship by investment program.

Marriott Hotels & Resorts is Marriott International’s flagship brand of full-service hotels and resorts. The company, based in Washington D.C., is repeatedly included on the Forbes Best Companies to Work for list, and was voted the fourth best company to work for in the UK by The Times in 2009.

As of September 2013, there were 505 hotels and resorts operating under the brand. The loyalty program is called Marriott Rewards.

In making such a decision was the clientele base of Mariott hotel analyzed and the product we offer considered. We would have realized that the patrons of the Mariott’s and the Kep’s are the high rollers looking for the neon light after dark till dark!! In her tranquility of rest Dominica is not the sort of destination to attract these ravers of wreckers nor should it by any means necessary desire these not so environmentally minded visitors to its shores. By definition we should be seeking to invite the likes of High End Eco Chain resorts

Skerritt gives you just enough to want you to vote for him next election around. It’s good baiting… He realizes that he doesn’t have to prove anything to Dominicans…. afterall they are used to waiting 20 years for a groundbreaking or press releases like this with no action for 10 years… Dominicans created this monster (the political climate).

And while people here continue the 40 year old moan about the lack of an international airport … know this.. the money building these hotels are not our own. foreigners seem to see the potential in our country and spend real dollars in hotel plant .. all we can do is whine about the lack of a $2 billion airport that we cannot pay for and may not even need. Yes. I said it .. ask yourself why it is that LIAT is busy trying to avoid landing here, and when they are forced to are coming in at less than 50% capacity? who here would buy a 10 ton truck when you only have 2 box of fig to carry? Do your research about the 1000’s of successful resorts and destinations which do not have close air access (clue: most ski resorts) and the kind of tourists who come here looking for unspoiled nature. no.. continue to bury your head in the international airport sand while other destinations are busy doing the real work of upgrading their human resource, marketing strategies, exotic agriculture…

      Are you an idiot?

All Roosevelt does is lie to people like you, who does not have enough commonsense to realize Skerrit is only running off his mouth.

If you were not an idiot you would suggest that Skerrit find the money that is needed to build an International Airport before he keep farting from lying mouth talking about he is negotiating with anybody to build hotel in a backward place without an International Airport.

Hotel operators such as Marriott which owns a chain of Hotels, in the thousands depend on the volume of people who register in their hotel, about three years ago during a Cricket Match in Dominica I heard one commentator said when ask there are seven hundred hotels room in the country, and even at festival time they are filled.

When I ask a permanent businessman if that is true, he confirmed that to be true: No hotel chain operator will go to Dominica and build a four bedroom house and call it a hotel.

And if the Moroccan as you claim is not built with…

If the Moroccan as you claim is among those not built with Dominica money, as if you and Skerrit have money to build hotel, Is standing there decaying unfinished; do you believe any reputable organization will get into you all confusions and mess to waste their investors money to pleas you and Skerrit?

Our greatest challenge in Dominica is Air Access and all Governments we ever had promised the same thing. DFP , UWP and DLP. If Dominicans Local and abroad have to pledge to pay it off we will do all possible for the benefit of the country. We are suffering with no air access and this is hampering growth in all sectors from Cargo planes, passenger planes to business men and women.

    • Reasoning
      June 14, 2016

South City, with all fairness, the only government which tried and was in the process of constructing an airport of international standards, was the UWP government,we got to be honest. They proved to us that they were in the process of constructing it by accumulating the land.We voted them out and didn’t give them a chance to at the least prove them wrong. If you say to me that you are going to build a house and i see you buy the land, prepare the plan and something happens to you soon after, just before the construction of the house, which prevented you from continuing with the construction, should i not believe that you had intentions of building a house?

  9. Concerned
    June 14, 2016

The patrons of the Marriott will not be comfortable in Dominica. The infrastructure is just not available to support the lifestyle of the kind of persons who patronize these hotels. Take St. Kitts for instance who has an International Airport and a private airport for the billionaires and millionaires with private jets. What are we going to offer these guests when they arrive? Solitude and a good night’s rest on their vacation?

Dominica looks like Haiti now. I am just so saddened by what Dominica has become. The average Dominican close their eyes and turn their heads. Dominica is now a rubbish dump. A big ghetto

This GOVT must be paying Marriott to come here…. There is no economic in Dominica to convince Marriott they will receive a return on their investment, all the growth indicators are negative and extremely poor access to the country . This is a prudent organization who have to be accountable to how they spend their shareholders money…..therefore this does not add up.

My suspicion is Marriott must be getting free money from this GOVT before they even reach to Dominica and don’t need to invest a cent in this Dominica chain that must me sweet deal for them.

it is all nice and good to talk about hotels. You do not have an international airport to bring the people in or get them out in a timely manner. currently the is about 1000 hotel rooms and you are struggling to get 50% of them filled, why in the world you are building all these hotels? Are we going to do like North Korea and build 300 rooms hotel and have 3 people going in and out all day so people thinks that it is filled and doing good?

“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed plans of his government to have a Marriott Hotels & Resorts constructed in the north of the island.”

I know I am going to get all kinds of thumbs down for saying this; but I will anyway!

First of all anybody with commonsense knows that Hotel chains does not invite government to bargain, or negotiate to build Hotels in their country! That is another of Skerrit’s mythical, delusional lies! Anybody can call me what they wish you will never see a entity such as Marriott build a hotel in a place like Dominica, where no International Airport exists!

Unless, that company were scouting for locations, and chose Dominica, mark my words, that did not happen, that is just another lie! It will never happen! Take some time out check, and see on how many Marriott’s are located in the Caribbean, and on the more developed islands with sea and sand and come to your conclusion.

    Very Good idea PM.
Let’s give a round of applause to that. The question is why are we putting the cart before the horse.
Are we able to fly in guest , and I mean no more than one stop. Or are we still thinking hopping the islands
Are we able to carry them on big busses. And limos , Or are we thinking of those mini bus.
I would rather be reading , Govt of Dominica signed contract for building an international airport , whether it’s a govt project of a Build ,operate and diliver project.
Or construction of new roads within the island , time to make new roads with new connections. In this day and age mountains are not an obstacle , flatten mountains and the same gravel and sand will be used to build the roads. Etc.
Don’t forget we ship sand to build guada airport. From the layou disaster or blessing which ever way you look at it.

this is sooo funny and dumb! why would you seek to bring in a MArriot when we need tremendous infrastructure and superstructure development. Why dont you concentrate on reviving the country from the effects of Erica, developing more viable tourism sites and activities through your discover Dominica Authority and Ministry of Tourism FIRST! Before looking to add more rooms. Speak to many of the existing hoteliers. Rooms and accommodations isnt the problem as many are not even at full capacity. We have rooms and places to stay. WE need product development! we need Infrastructure properly developed. we need SERVICES tha operate around and complimenting the infrastructure. For example, why dont we have a gas station in the pond casse area? after i leave canefield and go into the interior, where again can i get gas? where can i get a safe place to relieve myself after the one or two shops in pond casse closed? roads are not properly paved or lit. when will we get serious about our developmen
