Gov’t provides $50,000 for works at Lindo Park

The government has provided $50,000 to Goodwill Sports & Development Committee to complete works at the Lindo Park in Goodwill.

The check was presented to a member of the committee on the weekend and Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit described it as government’s “initial contribution” to the project.

“This $50,000 is our initial contribution as the government we have always indicated our willingness to partner with the Lindo Park Development Committee, just that we felt that we need to ensure that everybody has the information as required: we know what is going to be done, how it is going to be done and when it is going to be done, what is the cost of doing it and where we can partner, we are more than willing to partner,” he said.

Skerrit said he has received information that additional assistance for fencing, lamps for lighting and synthetic material for the jogging track will be needed,

“We give the commitment that we will partner with you to have that completed,” he noted.

He said he wants the project to be a ‘shining example’ of community people working together.

“We want the Lindo Park to become a shining example of what community people can do together to make things happen for themselves,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister said the government’s only interest is to have the park available to everyone.

“As I said on the radio program, and I will say it again, our only interest is for it to be made available to the entire community, that everybody has access to it,” he noted referring to a program on a local radio station where he had discussed the matter. “But certainly we will continue to partner with you. You have, I see, direct access to the minister and the PS, feel free to go to them and they will get to me and we will provide the resources to ensure that we can complete the Lindo Park to the satisfaction of the residents and the sportsmen and sportswomen of the Goodwill community.”

The project was being led by the Lindo Park Improvement Committee but it was halted by the Planning Division last year on the basis that it was being done without government’s permission or approval.

It was argued by Skerrit back then that Lindo Park is state property and no one, not even state agencies, had the authority to even appear to take ownership of such properties.

In September a member of the committee appeared on Kairi’s Heng Program appealing for assistance and Skerrit called in and promised that the government would provide $50,000 towards the project.

The project was initiated with funds from the Australian Direct Aid through the Australian High Commission in conjunction with the New Zealand High Commission before it was halted.

Church and State shouldnt mix. Is people like you that need to pay Tommy Lee. This project is nw a complete mess thanks to the government who needs to allow the communities to develop and take these initiatives on by themselves for themselves. This is allll politics. but guess what? The very good people of Roseau North (Goodwill and environs) know all too well what is happening. We will not be fooled by political chess. We know it is Mr. Lugay and the committee in Goodwill who is going this good work for us and trying to work with the government. Jack will get his Jacket and so will Mr. Lugay and his team. Rename the park the Lindo and Lugay Park.

When you say quote “We want accountability like America” such statement can only be described as someone with a herd mentality. Do you really believe America exemplifies what accountability is as a Country, what a fallacy.

Isn’t that the job of the Minister of Sports to do the presentation Mr PM? ,Maybe not Skerrit because you think the money is your grandfather’s own and not Dominica— such backward thinking….. Take more pictures my boy.

Every Island within the OECS has a synthetic track. Dominica is always the last one invited to the party. Even when funding is provided to help elevate our athletes, these cronies find a way to screw it up. Way to go guys. What a complete waste of an article and waste of the people’s time. Stick to selling passports.

Thank you for your comments Sliver Fox. This project should have been completed a long time ago. Funding was provided for the project from the Australian High Commission. School-Boy Bullying Tactics and petty hatred of Danny Lugay is the reason why this project like so many others is still on the drawing board. Unfortunately, too many have been brain-washed by the likes of Skerrit and his cronies. I do not care one iota about Red, Blue or Green. The interest of Dominica and its citizens must always be placed above this foolishness that passes for good governance. Remember one of Skerrit’s arguments again completing the project was: “Who will hold the keys to the gate?”

The govt tied this project up for months. it could have been fully financed and completed already if they would only work with the committee from Goodwill. Right now the park looks like a mess. i dont even know why they put that concrete track around the field the way they have it. Look now it looks like they want to put up a wall around the field. Idk it looks like it is being created as they go along. That ark has served the community for decades just the way it was. it could have been upgraded and maintained, but not th way it is going. in the end it will be destroyed and an eyesore. But i really hope i am wrong.

Thanks you honourable (what dishonourable taste)?
Where is Danny Lugay who fought the fight for his people. I understand a group has been found.

Danny Lugay name, as Par Rep, will be standing strong for a long time. He pursued and brought results and others are forced to follow.

      Well Danny and your team

Speak for yourself Vernice, don’t assume to speak for all, of us because that is arrogant. I am a Dominican, who does not love Roosevelt Skerrit and afraid to say so.

This article and photo opportunity is a glaring example of how “Completely Dumb, Stupid and Deliberately Backwards,” this government is. How long now since this Lindo Park Project has been incomplete? Probably the same length of time as the “The 50 room Guest House” in Portsmouth.
