Gov’t to continue focus on rebuilding Dominica in new year – PM Skerrit

The Prime Minister said continues to work to assist storm-affected communities

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said his government will continue to focus on rebuilding Dominica in the new year.

Dominica suffered serious damage during the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on August 27 and the Prime Minister said government continued to work assiduously to assist affected communities.

“Since the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, government has focused on rebuilding,” he stated. “Every effort was made to provide access to all communities and we continue to work assiduously to deal with the communities in the east that are still challenged.”

He stated that he is pleased that night landing has been restored in a shorter period of time than anticipated at the island’s main airport.

“This was done with improved technology utilizing solar-based systems,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that government has sought to alleviate the social burdens caused by the storm and to bring relief to those who were directly affected.

“Despite the recovery program we have not lost sight of the other development imperatives,” he noted. “As I have indicated before some programs would have to be delayed, however, we remain committed to pushing the opportunities for creating employment.”

Skerrit indicated that last month his government passed all of the legislations that are necessary to give effect to policy decisions that are intended to enhance the environment for investment.

“This included, but not limited to. amendment to the VAT Act, the Aliens Holding Regulations, and the Stamp Duty Act,” he explained.

He stated further that recently government signed a contract for the construction of a new National Hospital which is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2016 and he spoke of promoting the island’s Citizenship by Investment Program.

“In recent weeks I have addressed a number of gatherings internationally in which the Dominica Citizenship By Investment (CBI) program have been promoted,” Skerrit said.

If the Venezuelans learn from their mistakes, maybe one day the Skerritites will learn. This is not about “Red versus Blue or Yellow”. It’s about the development of Dominica to a respectable status. Not a Dominica associated with diplomatic passport sale to international criminals. One that its leader in recent weeks addressed international gatherings but, unable to update on moneys given, or promised by the donor countries through Baroness Scotland. Or how much money was paid by the Nigerian minister for Petro resources. Diezani Alison Madueke? Tell us how much was deposited in the treasury from the proceedings.

It’s easy for me to sit and type this, but the truth is although rebuilding is a high priority, Dominica should focus on completing the geothermal project; as it will be more vital to the economy of Dominica and its future.

Dominica should consider the economical benefit of completing the geothermal project as soon as possible. I say this in light of the veiled threats to the supply and price of petroleum from Venezuela by the Americans. While oil prices are this low, advantage must be taken and the power plant completed.

It seems as if whenever Dominica builds up momentum in its development, it is knocked back. This geothermal project is development in a new direction and should be given the highest priority.

I think someone has lost sight of the fact that geothermal will bring Dominica; A new industry, More economical freedom and a revenue source to pay down debts.

Many moons ago as a teenager we would spend too much time on errands playing marble hole, then upon realization we would rush home with the most ridiculous of excuses. Today I read this pathetic statements of how Dominica development will proceed and I ask myself who will trust us now given all these charges of this government on the international scene. Now, thinking back on how Agriculture budget was reduced to make way for tourism, Dominica is faced with a surmountable challenge; the farmers are unhappy with roads & fertilizer distribution, and there is denial of the government influence in the distribution. One thing is clear a divided house cannot stand and the government of Dominica has not exhibit statesmanship to bring people together to remedy the ills in this country. The PM can speak of all sort of CBI and meetings, but until he can unify the country nothing he says will have traction and subsequently move the country forward. He needs to view this situation as critically.

Skerritt continue to defy all, who dare question, speak about the selling of our passports. What CIP? What investment? Our passports like wealthy people’s doormats. Skerritt appoints Ambassadors, like peas, giving them passports, in exchange for God knows what. The country selling cheap, sold, Big time. Sold to those millionaires and billionaires, crooks, criminals, money-launderers, fraudsters, in corruption. NG Lap Seng main man in China relations?

CBI promotion of Dominica is solely geared towards foreigner looking for 2nd citizenship. Our poor farmers can’t possibly be expected to buy into these investments. Your government won’t give away these high end up scale dwelling units like red clinic.

“He stated that he is pleased that night landing has been restored in a shorter period of time than anticipated at the island’s main airport.” (Roosevelt Skerrit).

Roosevelt, you need to stop making a fool out of yourself, you are a one man circus; pleased as you are about seeing the pretty lights on the Run Way at night, what purpose are they serving? You can answer that question by producing some statistics. The idea of night land might be to attract more visitors to the island.

Since the half of a billion dollars was spent on Ralph Gonzalez advise, how much more tourist your so called night landing has attracted to the island. Roosevelt when I was a little boy, I sat with Carlton Felix the first Air Traffic Controller in Dominica, and saw LIAT land at eight (8:00 PM) o’clock in the night on a bright summer day, there were no landing lights, you were not yet born!

So, what is the big deal with your constant babbling, about night landing; nothing you say is new, you are…

So, what is the big deal with your constant babbling, about night landing; nothing you say is new, you are stale, spoilt milk. What Dominicans want to hear is when will an International Airport be built in the country? They have a saying in America which goes like this. “if I am doing bad with you, I can do bad by myself.” and that is in reference to a woman having a man in her life who is not capable of helping her. So what’s the point of you talking the same old crap, and not doing anything to help the people and country.

With you the country is doing poorly, step aside, and let someone else become burdened trying to get the country to move in the right direction you are a pathetic waste of time, your time has long past, that is why there term limits in places like the United States. When one becomes ineffective it is time to go!

  23. December 22, 2015

***WARNING DOMINICANS*** In the event that serious visa restrictions are placed on Dominican Passport Holders, the value of our passports will be significantly decreased. This means that the CBI program will immediately fold as no one will be interested in purchasing a passport that has no significant visa-free entry privileges. This also means that the main source of financing for the Range-Kempinski and the more recent Tranquillity Beach Resort Dominica in Salisbury will be GONE (poof)! Then, what else is our Government doing to boost our economy and create employment? I respectfully ask my Labourite comrades to give me an answer on this one. Businesses are closing, there is virtually no exports, the abattoir and the coffee plant are basically white elephants. VAT revenues are at an all time low and the recently passed “highway maintenance tax” and “sweety tax” can in no way make up for lost VAT revenues. Can you see where this is heading?

The Prime Minister has his priority wrong. The rebuilding of Dominica is obvious. I believe the Prime Minister should concentrate his unwavering efforts on damage control. Which serious head of state is going to assist you financially with the country carrying so much corrupted baggage. Which head of state is going to even want to speak to you when your nominee for Commonwealth Secretary can publicly insult her own people, far less for them in case there is disagreement in negotiating assistance for Dominica. Which reputable business organization will want to do business with you , when the passports of your country, be it regular or diplomatic are sold to all kinds of crooks. You talked about promoting the sales of Dominica’s passport at international gatherings, God forbids, a pass port gets into the hands of Isis. You will tell the world, due diligence was done, but no one will believe, judging on the case of the Nigerian lady. Merry Xmas everyone.

  32. December 22, 2015

Our dear and precious Supreme Leader’s attempt at “damage control” seems a bit off to say the least. It begins with the TS Erica mantra, goes into efforts to rebuild, night landing, creating an environment for investments, bringing employment, new hospital and ends up with the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program. It makes it quite obvious that our dear Prime Minister wants to divert attention from the fire that is now under his feet. It’s like saying: “hey guys I did nothing wrong, so let’s just move on”! Yet, all Dominicans (RESIDING IN DOMINICA) knows full well that there is REALLY no money coming in that would make a dent in the $1.3 Billion dollars needed to bring Dominica to any standard of proper infrastructural normalcy. The CBI program has been our Prime Minister’s main focus for the last almost four months. Now, it is the last thing mentioned in his statement. Where is an update on the benefits and accomplishments of your recent travels Sir?

  35. December 22, 2015

“In recent weeks I have addressed a number of gatherings internationally in which the Dominica Citizenship By Investment (CBI) program have been promoted,” Skerrit said. In light of the recent scandal I believe that the timing of this particular statement is wrong . The fact is that the CBI program is now under intense scrutiny after the Diezani Alison-Madueke scandal. It certainly would be wise not to be publicly advocating for the continuance of the program at this time. It would be better to assure the Dominican public and the International Community that your Administration is taking a closer look at the due diligence process of the CBI program and will be putting measures in place to make sure that recipients of passports through the program are legally and ethically suited. This statement actually sounds like an act of defiance against any International Authorities that are calling Dominica’s CBI program into question. Very bad timing Sir!

Learning……………………..During the last century we have moved from the Industrial Age through the Information Age to the Knowledge Age. The ability to obtain, assimilate and apply the right knowledge effectively, will become a key skill in the next century. Our ability will no longer be judged solely by qualifications gained in the past, but will also be assessed by our capacity to learn and adapt in the future.

Learning is important, (WAKE UP MY PEOPLE)

By now this should have realized that he cannot fool anybody besides himself. What has he done after Erika? Nothing!!! Just look at the forgotten people of Delices and Boetica who are currently using zip lines as a means of transportation over treacherous precipices while he and Patricia Baroness laid away in a manger popping champagne and now you want to come run your mouth? These people have been stocked it their villages for months and you continue to demonstrate to us that you do not have a heart of flesh and blood but rather one that is made out of stone. Citizenship By Investment and VAT act my foot. I guess this means more so called high level meetings in which you will travel to Dubai and come back empty handed. His majesty has rendered himself as useless to the citizens of Dominica. Garcon put your focus where it is needed and get the people of Delices and Boetica out of their misery and leave that Nigerian scandalous woman alone.

If I were to write a book about poverty, detailing the reasons why some people are poor, I expect it would open your eyes and you would never make such a comment again. It is my plan to do so. I reside in an area of the world where there is poverty. It has many faces. It projects the reason why people are poor which is by no means the fault of any government. So cease your blame game and open your mind and think.

Skerrit and the DLP are as incompentence as one can get, 16 years in office and nothing to show for it

Face the Facts you are ignorant of the definition of poverty. Corruption creates poverty is where the government abuses public funds, have overloaded government ministers, feed on the ignorance of people …made corrupt promises they could not keep, kept the people in poverty as beggars with the red clinic, no employment created……..hefty government,,….18 and still counting……..etc etc….

Lady Facts, one thing you need to remember ; is that poverty in Canada, America, Europe, are far different than poverty in Dominica! Poverty in Dominica poverty, dirt poor!

If you find someone walking bare feet in any of the countries I named, they are doing it by choice, or they might be out of their mind and in a demented state! Poverty in Dominica, means there are people today who does not have a penny to buy food, there are still people walking without shoe on their feet, some never got out of the flip-flop you all calls push-in; that is poverty.

I am in a business Lady Facts where I deal with people who are supposed to be living in poverty. Ninety (90%) of the people I rent to: rents are subsidized by the State or Federal government. Here is an example of one such person; her monthly rent is $1,800.00 dollars per month, of that total she pays me out of her pocket $56.00 dollars. The government pays directly to me the balance of $1,744.00 each and every month! Last week I…

Last week I went to put the trash out; in the parking space I gave here for free, she has a brand new fifty something thousand dollar motor vehicle parked there: as a matter of fact two SUV’s along with another car, so she has four in all: Do you have four motor vehicles Facts?

Some of them have better materialistic things in their apartment than I the supposed landlord have in me house you see. Use what you read here as the thesis for your book!

Skerrit ,behave yourself please. Who are you depending on to rebuild after you and cabal kill it and take us to the ground?… who…, the Nigerian politician with our passport, you hid from us.? Man we Dominicans cannot take you seriously, it is like political comedy every time you utter words of so called development.
Who do you think you are impressing..? Sir we do not trust you with the truth……let alone with an honest lie.

    • December 22, 2015

The only plan the UWP has is to object to anything that Skeritt proposes and dream of the day when they will be in power selling passports. The sale of passports will continue under a UWP administration. Did the UWP explain to its supporters what the arrangement was with the company now operationg in St. Kitts that is associated with the citizen by investment program.Did the party leader explain the term …” enlighten global citizen”….I think the UWP supporters should ask of their leadership what is their position on the sale of passports or the citizenship by investment program. Remember that it was as a result of the actions of the UWP that Dominicans are now required to have a visa to enter Canada.

Find yourself within yourself before you can tell the PM/someone else to behave themselves! who and what was taken to the grown, are you for real, and what’s the truth? we are all at some point in our life hiding and covering up behind the word TRUTH. (When you constantly blame others, view yourself as a victim and feel others are causing all of your hardships, you inevitably surround yourself with anger, resentment and negative thoughts — all of which are surefire ways to bring on fatigue, sadness, stress and even chronic disease.) my people let us move on and build Dominica as a team……………..
