Housing assistance for families affected by natural disasters

The effect of Tropical Storm Ophelia in Layou

The government of Dominica has announced that in 2013 it will relocate families that have been displaced by natural disasters and provide housing assistance for them.

This is being done with assistance from the Chinese Government, Minister of Housing Reginald Austrie said in an interview with the Government Information Service (GIS).

Austrie said a number of families from San Sauver and residents from Mahaut who were affected by Tropical Storm Ophelia will benefit from the housing assistance.

“You remember when we had the landslide we had to relocate at least six or seven families from the landslide area (in San Sauver). We have identified the lands for that and with the assistance of the Chinese Government we are committing to assist these families in constructing their own homes,” he said.

The minister continued, “In Mahaut, after Tropical Storm Ophelia, a number of people had to be displaced because they were right there in the course of the river … we are also seeking to identify the lands with the assistance from the Chinese Government.”

Austrie explained that Chinese technicians are presently in Dominica, “looking at the sites and looking at the logistics.”

The housing minister also revealed that a housing project earmarked for the Cotton Hill area in Lagoon will get off the ground in 2013.

“We have had this project which we have been trying to execute for the last couple of years. The problem we have had with that is the nature of the land. As you know Cotton Hill is probably the last piece of real estate in possession of the state in Dominica. We have at least five, six hundred acres of land which has always been dedicated to high end development. We need to be very careful how we utilize the lands in that area,” he explained.

The minister said there has been some movement on identifying a suitable location in the Cotton Hill Estate to locate the housing project.

My aim after college is to become a single mother with 5 children, who takes no contraceptives.

Then build my house under the road near the ravine on squatted land, have no mortgage and get all that good hearted assistance. Associate degree nah pay them days.

Skerrit need to implement speech writing for the ministers. The government minsters needs to be scrutinised for their poor grammer. They are an embarrasment to the educated public.
