Kalinago Chief presses for special housing facilities, better roads

Joseph

A special housing facility for public officers in the Kalinago Territory and better road conditions are among areas that the Kalinago Chief wants to be given priority in the 2011/12 annual budget.

Kalinago Chief Garnet Joseph said housing for public officers in the Kalinago Territory have been promised by government for several years but “nothing has been done”.

He said allocation should be made in the upcoming budget to meet the needs of public servants.

“This is something that was promised in 2009 during an address at the inauguration of the Kalinago Council. Nothing is in place so far and we want to ensure that allocation is made from this budget to be able to meet the needs of these public servants,” he pointed out.

Meantime Joseph said some attention must be given to the roads, more specifically the Horse Back Ridge Road.

“Part of the road is being fixed by a program under the Caribbean Development Bank but the other section coming from the Bataca end is in a very deplorable condition. We have written to the Public Works Minister and to date we haven’t gotten a response. This is a road used by all tour operators and today it is very hard for even four wheel drives to travel this road,” he said.

Oh please. Mr. Chief you should be looking to give everyone their own land title so they can go pursue their own mortgage loans to build like the rest of Dominica. Thats what u should be looking into. Enough with the want want want and expecting it to be handed on a silver plater. Time to work hard like the rest of the country to get what they want. NEGOTIATE THE LAND TITLE SO EVERYONE CAN HAVE SOME FORM OF SECURITY FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION. stupes

I do not know of another area in D/ca that receives as much attention from the State as the Carib territory. Unfortunately, every time the Carib Chief or some other leader from the Carib Territory is in the news, it is because they are asking fro something; often, something that is not granted to most other Dominicans.

The Kalinagos are a special people. They are indigenous to D/ca and they have a number of social issues that exist elsewhere in D/ca but do so in greater magnitude in the Territory: poverty, child abuse, substance abuse, indolence, and a relatively high rate of young men with little ambition are some of these issues.

Still, this is no excuse for the constant begging that has characterized the office of the Carib Chief, present and previously. I know of many deprived communities here but no other community in D/ca is heard in the news begging for this and that as the Carib territory. None!

I have never heard a Carib Chief in the news announcing practical initiatives for the development of the Territory. It is about time that the kalinagos get off their backsides and do what they can for themselves. Look after your social issues as best as you can. Start some skills development programmes. Use your human resource development facilities to educate and uplift your people. show some ingenuity and find ways to raise capital for your people. Dominica has a small cake. This small cake must be divided among ALL of us. If you are going to beg, well, show that you are as passionate about helping yourself as you are about begging. The rest of D/ca owes you ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Stop waiting on others to do for you. Enough with the begging, already. Enough!

……..and what about housing for non Kalinago public servants?? I think it is high time that the Kalinago people of Dominica be treated equally and be afforded the same opportunities as the rest of the country. As Dominicans we all carry the same passport and fly the same flag, so we all must play an equal role and receive equal shares and profits in the development of this country. This separation and treatment of the Kalinago people as a special class of Dominicans much apart from rest of the country must stop. they were here first but we all had a hand in the building of this nation. We only owe to the Kalinago people the respect owed to every citizen of this country and nothing more.

……….and how exactly are the indians in your almighty USA treated??……like second class citizens, locked away on their reserves with feathers in their hair and doing tribal dances around fires, can a native american indian without medicare walk into a new york hospital and receive the same level of medical treatment as the urban new yorker?? travel i have and it is through the experiences of my travels that i have learned and come to realize that that is not the kind of segregation i want for the native people of my country. I believe in equal oppotunity for each and every Dominican without regard to class, color or ethnicity. Dominica belongs to us all and the weight of her development must be equally proportioned on the shoulders of all her sons and daughters, this culture of some must work and the others must beg must be stopped (by the sweat of your brow u shall eat bread).

I have no issues with the Kalinago as a people and i have nothing against their indigenous or cultural status. But i also see them as Dominicans entitled to share in the responsibilities of nation building just as they are equally entitled to reap the rewards. My problem is with able bodied men and women who refuse to work and on account of indigenous status expect to receive and live off hand outs from the state while the rest of us must work to eat, build houses etc. (if Kalinago civil servants are entitled to special housing or any other arrangements so too must each and every other Dominican civil servant making his/her contribution to nation building).

The debt owed to the Carib people, if ever there was any, has long been paid i believe and they have long enjoyed equal social status with the rest of us and afforded the same opportunities in education and industry. it is due time that the Caribs earn their keep like the rest of us. they have fought hard for and have earned their equality and respect as DOMINICANS and so it is only fair to treat them equally in EVERY aspect.

the Kalinago Territory has some of the worse roads in the island. Public Works does a poor job on them that does not last. Please give us quality on the construction of our roads. Is that too much to ask for? Simple patching with a thin layer of asphalt is not working. Do a good lasting job.

look this chief should resigned he is a poorpet on a string
he wants houses for his officers thats dum,The man should
be looking for a state house to house the chief in office and
can accommodate any other carib chief that visiting the reserved
not looking for government to house his officers.
thats a big joke ,if government had to house all its ministers
do you know how much the tax payers would have to pay
    you better try something else.
