The Kalinago Territory will soon benefit from a project geared at bringing Solar Energy to that community.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The Kalinago Solar PV Project, which is expected to be completed in November 2015, is being facilitated by the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs along with the Kalinago Council, with the endorsement of the Ministry of Health and the Environment, and implemented by the DCH Solargiga GmBH from Germany.

Development Officer in the Ministry of the Kalinago Affairs, Cozier Frederick, said work have already started on seven chosen public sites, among them are the Kalinago Barana Aute, a library, the Kalinago Council Office and public buildings.

“All of these projects have been set up, all the physical work has been done and the engineers are progressing to do all of the inter-connective work,” he said.

Frederick said the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs is also working in collaboration with DOMLEC, who is assisting in making all of the relevant necessary technical work in place.

He also said there is an extensive solar farm in Kalinago Territory with a 125 kilowatt powered plant.

“It is much bigger than the normal size that we have on the existing public buildings because most of the smaller buildings are 5.5 Kilowatts powered,” Frederick explained.

He indicated further that quite a bit of people are engaged in building the base for the plant itself.

“Quite a few others are encasing the area in terms of security, doing a fence,” he noted. “So the project is moving on smoothly and we are hoping that at the end of this month we will have a full completion of the project and the Kalinago Territory will begin benefiting from solar energy.”

Meantime he said members of the Kalinago Territory are having firsthand experience in the project.

“A lot of people in the community have had a firsthand experience in the project itself and quite a number of persons are employed within that project,” Frederick said. “We have engaged presently two local engineers from the Kalinago Territory with two assistance and they are working with their engineer out of Barbados and an engineer out of Germany who are actually doing the ground work.”

Aye one thing some people like pure donkey, the article talking about helping the Caribs with solar but these people ahve to come with politics just accept it’s a good deed/project no matter who doing it, who funding it or under what administration it is done. You people like too much discord. One Dominica.

I think solar is a good move. It is not centralized, and can serve as a good back-up system. My concern is, are those panels hurricane-safe? Some of the photos, have me concerned.

TRUE! It’s not a Labour Party project but it is the Labour Party Government who approved the project and submitted same for funding through CARICOM. So what is your point. Of utmost importance is the fact that many Kalinago families will benefit from the project.

Very good news — however, the island needs reliable and dependable base-load electricity production which runs day and night. Dominica has the hydro-power (about 3 MW). What is missing is a geothermal power station which could produce 6-8 MW. Free from the diesel, then we could start talking about energy independence.

    • November 17, 2015

That’s true and I’m all for geothermal or wind if they make sense. But one can use solar to fill a battery during the day and run off that battery at night, so it’s not just useful half the time. Besides, this sort of thing is a way for individual households and businesses to become free from a centralised power generator, which should be appealing to many.

Not only that, the peak load is during the day when the power is needed the most. Therefore if we could make greater use of solar power of which we have an unlimited amount of sunshine, that would go a long way to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel.

It’s all about the great minds within the blessed Dominica Labour Party, their commitment to a better Dominica for all Dominicans and their love of Country. We will definitely be “voting Labour again” next election. We simply cannot lose…ever!!

That’s a great initiative! It’s always welcome to see Dominica make strides towards energy independence.
