The community of Layou is receiving Australian help to better prepare for the coming hurricane season.
A “Safer Housing Project” being implemented by the Layou Improvement Committee at the moment, is funded by the French government, INTERRREGEGE and Pirac and being done in collaboration with the Dominica and French Red Cross.
US$15,000. is being pumped into the project, according to the Committee.
Twenty individuals who received training at the weekend are expected to work on 17 houses in the community.
On Sunday they focused on three of these houses.
Committee President Lazare Charles says the aim is to get the houses being worked on “not disaster-proof, but making them stronger”.
The teams involved are looking at various aspects of the buildings they are repairing, and the initiative includes nailing down loose galvanize sheeting and installing hurricane straps on the roofs.
“Those houses that do not have hurricane straps we are putting hurricane straps on them, we are looking at the foundation and strengthening the walls,” Lazare told DNO.
He expects fourteen identified houses to be done in the next two weeks, in addition to the three that have already been “strengthened”.
The activity is being undertaken by three working groups, according to the Improvement Committee Chairman.
Good Job! I think we should also try to get emergency ‘grab and go’ bags for the people too- these bags (like at http://www.hurricanecamping.com) have basic 1st aid kits, water filters, etc and are very inexpensive if we can find a sponsor to help.
GO LAZARRRR! I am so proud of this committee and I am even more proud to see my ppl working together. That’s the Layou I remember and miss
