LED Street Lights being installed under Canefield cliff

lightForty-four LED energy efficient street lights are currently being installed under the Canefield cliff to enhance security and safety of the newly rehabilitated roadway.

This comes ahead of a wider national street lighting project to commence before the end of 2013.

This major street lighting project will be executed by the Ministry of Public Works and will involve the installation of 4 851 solar street lights across the country.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has given a commitment to the Government of Dominica to provide 2 500 of those lights.

Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore in an interview on Thursday said the LED street lights under the Canefield cliff is being funded by the Government of Dominica at a cost of over $700,000.

“We have so far spent $730,000 for civil works and the installation of the fittings to include the lights,” the Minister noted.

The Minister said the project is being viewed as a necessity especially for motorists who use the road at night.

“Driving at nights especially when it rains is a very eerie site in that location and we are happy we are able to fund that by way of national funding to lead the way in that effort,” he said.

The Minister noted that the national street lighting project is a very costly but important exercise and should commence in earnest before year’s end.

“We are looking at two options. Option one, we are talking US$33-million. That is significant and will be done over a period of 33 months,” he stated.

The National Solar Street Light project will complement Government’s ongoing efforts at improving the island’s road network.

The plan of the Dominica Labor Party’s administration is to have the island’s road network in excellent condition by the year 2020.

I hope they install some lights in the Roseau Valley area. It is pitch-dark at night. Street lights will help to create the climate for a “Night Life” in Dominica. People will not venture out unless there are lights on the streets.

Applaud government for putting lights under the Canefield cliff? what kind of madness is that? This is the year 2013 not 213. Labourites you can do better than that, what about holding the government accountable for the millions which they owe to Petro Caribe and the other nefarious dealings, past and present that they are involved in

Hopefully this project is carried on to Portsmouth and the Carbrits National Park…Possie people fighting for “no land no vote,” these are the type of projects we should be fighting for; projects that develop the community on a whole instead of a handful of squatters. Then again that is the mentality of Possie people which a few wanna-bees are trying to capitalize on because of the institutionalization of Possie people..The family name speaks volume….the dogs, the rivers and so on….check their records…from bribery, to falsification of land/will records. Wake up North/Possie People and fight for community not self…..

I am all for safety and it is a great idea but the focus MUST be on the condition of roads before lights. The road to Giraudel and Wotten Waven is a DISGRACE and it is impassable now to reach the Giraudel cemetery.
Also the bridge to Wotten Waven it down when will that get repaired…

I sometimes wonder if some UWPites have brains. You mean nothing this government does is good. Then you turn around and want me to accept a promise of 5000 jobs in 3 years, 6 – 7% growth as soon as you come when the global figures are showing 3% !!!!!! Zot zors zot?

      November 5, 2013

In this era, governments of big countries cannot achieve that. I would think they are capable of decreasing 5,000 jobs; not increasing them.
How could they do it? This is wishful thinking. The best they should do is make no such far-reaching promises lest they disappoint nationals and get them annoyed with their failed promises.

The ENTIRE island need these type of lighting. OMG from Thibaud right through Vieille Case, especially those corners at TOBINEAU.

    November 2, 2013

That and all the government wants credit for? We need more lights in the country. Dominica is the only country you fly over at nights and hardly see lights. Roseau needs more light too so that the streets can be safer to walk at night….. By the way I hope they can withstand hurricane force winds. Seems there should fewer more sturdy poles like the ones at Woodbridge Bay.

when will people understand….these are the things that any government is SUPPOSED to do!! This is what they were voted in office for! This government expects people to give them praise for building roads and putting up street lights while jobs are being lost all over and there is no solid plan in place to get the people back on their feet….I urge my fellow Dominicans, DO NOT be blinded by party colour! Take a serious look at the real concerns of the country, are we really moving forward? Come on people….we are much smarter than that. It’s time we get our government to really work for us no matter who is in power

    • Peeping Tom
      November 1, 2013

You are correct, SMH: The LED lights are another sign that we have a government that is doing what we have asked them to do, i.e “work for us.” Thank you for reaffirming this. :-D

“When will people understand….these are the things that any government is SUPPOSED to do!! This is what they were voted in office for!” Well in all honesty it does seem that these ‘things’ have only really begun to happen in earnest under this administration. And I’m not talking about basic road repair but ambitious and genuinely useful projects like the Bay Front; that is true development of our infrastructure not just maintenance. I have seen more of these types of advancements under this administration than any previous ones, though I’m only 24 so my experience is limited.

“This government expects people to give them praise for building roads and putting up street lights while jobs are being lost all over and there is no solid plan in place to get the people back on their feet…” At this point I think they feel like they have to get as much positive PR out of simple infrastructure development because party politics has become so ridiculously bad in Dominica every basic administrative decision is scrutinized.

But that just my two cents…

    November 1, 2013

Folks I welcome the initiative. But I hope we are smart enough to realized allot of the things happening now are because the opposition is on the heels of the DLP…..I think we should start by thanking the opposition party for doing its job.

If many of the initiatives that the GOVT undertook in last 3months were done genuinely for the betterment of its people, they would have done them longtime ago.

Read in between the lines my friends!!!!!!

LED Solar Streetlighting is transformational..it is a true manifestation of the introduction of environmentally friendly energy efficiency technology as stated in Dominica’s Low Carbon Climate Resilience Development Strategy; as we as a nation aim towards acheiving a low emission development pathway and carbon neutrality by 2020…GREAT VISION.

Thats what they were voted in office for..to work. Not to steal our money at their whim and fancy. No applause is need here for such simple things that should have been part of the New Highway project that turned out to be a road rehabilitation project.

The “bulbs” Will light your way as you drive, ride, or walk to work (hopefully you would not be too lazy to walk to work if you have to). The “bulbs” raise the quality of life for you and your family.

Your government has worked for you. It has done what it was voted to do: create the environment in which you can thrive. It is now up to YOU to make the best of the “bulbs”.

you are really a percentage, a small fraction of the society. Aren’t you. Hold on to your “less pwa mal papay”. 5,000 jobs in three years? you were not told how, and you did not even asked about the how? So much for your percentage of thought.

You were one of the first to be asking for plans and programmes, what is it they will do for Dominica. Was that an. Honest request? Well I guess not but I am not surprised at all because people like you are not really interested in Dominica and the welfare of brothers and sisters who sit by with nothing to do, no income or means to feed their families. For you it is all about what you can get.

This is a great gesture.I must applaud the Government of Dominica for undertaking a very bold initiative. This will at least help in road safety and can even lead to curtailing certain crimes. We never see the importance of some things until something happens. While it might not bring money or jobs it brings protection and safety.

I would like to know which company is supplying those LED lights. Is it the same company which was recently set up just to supply them and received duty free concession? I tell you if I had $1 dollar to invest i would invest it in Dominica and just sit back and watch my $1 turn into millions and with duty free to boot.

Honestly? I could not even finish reading your comment. We are talking safety, how can that be bad? Would you rather ten people die from accidents so that you could run you mouth as to the situation which relates to the roads poorly lit? Now I am young, and thank God that I have a job now, but like you I have relatives and friends who are unemployed, my heart goes out to them, it hurts me, but I also know that they did not try to secure themselves when they had the chance. They did not find a skill or may not have finished college. I am not saying that they can get no jobs but they won’t do anything, they want the jobs that the college students are getting or else they wont work. That may not be the case for a few but if most of them sit and look back i bet they will say, ” I should have taken school more seriously”
