Libyan violence could affect investments in Dominica, OECS – Nanthan

Nanthan

Dominica’s Ambassador to Libya Emmanuel Nanthan said the violence in that  country could retard progress being made in the area of investment in Dominica.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has refused to stand down amid widespread anti-government protests which have been rocking the north African country for days.

“There are a number of plans that’s in progress and we are trying to do our best to develop these programs. Just last week I met with the Chairman of the Libyan Arab Investment Bank who was in St. Kitts to develop a bank there to serve the entire OECS,” Nathan said.

Nanthan said during the meeting he also met with investment officials from Libya to spearhead investments in the OECS and that also could be in trouble.

“The ongoing violence could retard the investment from Libya and we are very worried about that. There is an embassy that Libya established in St. Lucia and all that is likely to be affected,” Nanthan revealed.

At the same  time Nanthan is rubbishing suggestions by Former Prime Minister Edison James that government should reconsider its relationship with the Libyan government.

“I view his statements as scare mongering. That is however typical of him. He is trying to gain cheap political points and that’s sad, ” he said.

Human Rights groups say nearly 300 have been killed in Libyan violence so far.

dominicans look closely at your government and those they asociate with mr. have guts to say something like that not even speaking about the violence against unarmed protestors who oppose gadafi’s rule. i mean just imagine if we are to oppose skeritt will we suffer the same fate as the lybians will we be held hostage just so these guys can hold on to power i think we should change government every 5- 10 years so these guys dont get to comfortable in their seats and they should be heavily watched so they dont just come in and full their pockets and leave.

My concern is that why we as a christian nation are only forming alliances with these dictators who have no respect for human rights. We domiicans need to put the politics aside for a while and critically look at these matters.

I pray for the people of Lybia that they will be free.

I do not engage in political matters but as a citizen I have a concern that we may be having the wrong influences on our island’s governance.

AP – Militiamen loyal to Moammar Gadhafi clamped down in Tripoli, but cracks in his regime spread elsewhere across the nation, as the protest-fueled rebellion controlling much of eastern Libya claimed new gains closer to the capital. Two pilots let their warplane crash in the desert, parachuting to safety, rather than bomb an opposition-held city.

    February 23, 2011

We are loosing our souls in DA. For once, think of others and their feelings. One of the most important traits a leader can develop is empathizing. You don’t even have to mean it some times, but you have to make people think that you feel bad when others suffer.

If this gets out to the international community as our response to the suffering of the Libyan people, we will be looked at as a heartless and ruthless people. Make no mistake, when our ambassador, our ministers of government or our officials speak, they speak for DOMINICA and DOMINICANS everywhere. This is not what I want the rest of the world to hear from DOMINICA.

On a different note, what happens if this is our response and the revolution in Libya succeeds? What if the current government is removed? What will we say to the people who take over? What will we say about our response to their suffering?

My suggestion to the ambassador: Don’t go condemning anyone, because the bottom line is still very important. You want the money. Pretend like you are not concerned about the money and the projects etc. Make a short simple statement condemning violence in Libya on both sides. Say that your prayers and that of your country are with the Libyan people. Say that you hope this results in a peaceful end. And please sound like you mean it.

Then Stay the Hell away from the press before you embarrass Dominicans even more.

Sadly this is the sentiment of all these oecs leaders, what happened to the brotherhood of man, Human rights and the very basic God given right to the people of Lybia. how inhumane to believe that although people are dying by the hundreds, we are crying at the prospect of not getting the money that is stolen from these poor people.

Think again MR. AMBASSADOR, please read the news. Libya as a country will soon be history. There will be different states emerging within Libya.Do you know the your history? Libya’s population is made up of different tribes and this is what makes it complicated. This uprising will only strengthen their influence among their people and give them more autonomy.

Dominica has had a “so-called” relationship with Libya since the days of Rosie Douglas who passed away more than 10 years age, yet, to date, can anyone point out to me 1 single concrete example of Libyan investment in Dominica?

So, I wouold not waste too much time worrying about how the current situation in Libya is going to affect investment in Dominica.

First of all THERE ARE NO LIBYIAN INVESTMENTS IN DOMINICA.

Secondly, the Libyan government have much more important issue to consider an the moment…

DON’T YOU THINK THAT IF LIBYA WAS INTERESTED IN INVESTING IN DOMINICA THAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE SO BY NOW….

Is the former Prime Minister wrong in asking government to re-think its relationship with a man who allegedly sends helicopters, warplanes, mercenaries and snipers against his own people?

is Ambassador Nanthan aware that the Ambassador to Libya in NY and countless Libyan Ambassadors round the globe have condemned the bloodshed and called on Mr. Khadaffy to step down? Is Ambassador Nanthan aware that the Deputy Ambassador of Libya to the UN has reportedly asked the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to investigate Mr. Khadaffy for what he described as genocide and crimes against humanity created by Mr. Khaddafy?

Honourable Ambassador to Libya, why didn’t you condemn the bloodshed in Libya? Are your investments more important than human life?

Mr. Nathan says Mr. James is scare mongering. The real scare mongering is being perpetuated by Gaddafi himself who has called his own people rats and dogs whom he will kill. He is using war planes to bomb his own people! Yet, Mr. Nathan says nothing of this. Instead he is dismissing Mr. jAMES, whose call for a reassessment of relations with Libya is justified given what the Libyan Govt is doing to its own people, a scare mongerer. THis government has shown time and time again that it will prostitute the prinicples of adhering to the rule of law and human rights and holding solidarity with the oppressed of the world-principles that Dominica has held dear-simply to get a few million of dollars.

We say no to Gaddafi! The patriots saluate and are in solidarity with the brave people of Libya who are sacrificing their lives for real democracy!

    February 22, 2011

Nanthan’s attitude really pinpoints the greedy and ruthless motives of what politricks have now become in DA, It’s all for the love of money. Nothing more, nothing less. Just reading between the lines tells me that.

Nowhere in this report did I read about any kind of compassion for the murdered (yes murdered) and innocent protesters. Mothers and children. Killed. All due to Gadaffi’s power hungry regime, which should’ve been squashed a long time ago. I’m on the side of the Libyans fighting for their human rights and freedom. To think that all Nanthan is talking about is to quote “the violence in that country could retard progress being made in the area of investment in Dominica.” I had to read the article again just to see if there was any kind of sympathy to the lost lives…

Unbelieveable the lack of compassion and humanity.
Be interesting to hear the PM’s take on Libya and Gadaffi’s stance. Or, will one of his “advisers” speak on his behalf?

  34. Show me your friends
    February 22, 2011

Shame on you Nanthan! You are putting PROMISED INVESTMENTS before the lives of Lybians fighting for basic democracy? You are a very poor excuse for an ambassador. I don’t think that you are using your television set to educate yourself. You sound very ignorant, not to mention inhumane.

Dominicans this is to show us that we must not accept too many favors because there will be a day when you will have to return the favor and you will be put in a very awkward position as we are now. We have formed alliances with far left states………….show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.

    February 22, 2011

ARE THERE DOMINICANS STUDYING IN LIBYA, Mr.NANTHAN.

  37. Review the relationship
    February 22, 2011

Review relationship with Libya. Because of the oppression, repression, killing of innocent Libyans look again at the relationship with Libya Because the dictator and tyrannical leader refuses to listen to his own people’s concerns and instead ordering his thugs and mercenaries to massacre the people review ties with Libya. Nanton what is wrong with that genuine request or comment? Is James the problem? Does James have any relationship with Libya?

Nanton, You are the one showing the world how inhuman you are. What kind of ambassador/diplomat are you? Couldn’t you be more diplomatic and respond more humanely? Do you worry at all whether 1000 are MASSACRED. That would not trouble your conscience? Development is about PEOPLE FIRST, NOT MONEY.

Neither you, nor Skerritt or the DLP Govt. would make a statement condemning the atrocities now happening in Libya? You all do not have to say Ghadaffi is a dictator or even mention his name, but speak against the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians. You all are refusing to make a statement condemning the MASSACRE? That should convince Dominicans what kind of people with Hearts of stone that we have as a Govt. in Dominica.

You see, Nanton is well FIXED, like the others of his ilk. He feels he now have POWER and is in POWER. But like a TSUNAMI, DICTATORS and their cohorts will go down. A people oppressed will one day rise up and will FEAR NO MORE to express their concerns and protest against bad governance, corruption, stealing of or Fraudulent Elections, nepotism, and among others, QUICK ENRICHMENT by A FEW in POWER.

The Trend in Dominica is heading towards dictatorial rule. Now people are being charged, two months after a peaceful assembly. YES, PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY in the presence of peaceful POLICE OFFICERS. People cannot get responses to genuine questions posed to their Govt. Information on National issues are hard to come by. Many things are done in SECRET. When and If you dare ask or find out about the secret deals or agreements signed on behalf of Dominicans, you are demonised, chastised, ridiculed. The PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW. THE PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY. The people have a RIGHT to express their opinions once the opinions are not libelous.

Dominicans must be on their P’s and Q’s because people’s rights are being suppressed. Dictatorship is taking ROOT. All now so in Dominica the country has an ILLEGAL Leader who acted against the Laws of the Land regarding his DUAL CITIZENSHIP. All Dominicans know that. The courts know that for 14 months now. NEVER AGAIN SLAVERY. NO TO DICTATORIAL RULE. Nanton and his DLP colleagues must take heart and say NO TO the oppression and the Massacres in LIBYA and REVIEW Dominica’s relationship with that country NOW.

Dear Mr. Nanthan, as Dominica‘s ambassador to Libya, would you be so kind as to insure that this personal plea is forwarded to the appropriate authority in Libya. Whereas my concerns at this time is more about people than about projects I am compelled to send the following message. I thank you in advance

“ As citizen of the Commonwealth of Dominica , county that has establish diplomatic relations with the government of Libya and is a signatory to various human rights conventions, I call upon the government of Libya to refrain from the use violence against its citizens and to respond to their legitimate wishes .
