Major projects get underway in Carib Territory

Minister of Carib Affairs Ashton Graneau

Two major projects geared at improving the lives of the country’s first inhabitants are expected to get underway today (Tuesday).

Government will undertake the signing ceremony for the construction of access roads under the Carib Territory Community Capacity Building Project which was formally launched in 2009.

The access roads form one component of a multi-faceted project of the Government of Dominica funded by the Caribbean Development Bank.

The access road component will cost approximately EC$ 1.9M and is expected to be constructed within a period of nine months.

Carib Affairs Minister Ashton Graneau says the project will be beneficial in the short and long term.

“A number of our people will be employed there. We have a lot of skilled persons on the ground that have experience and skills in road construction. We expect some of them to be employed in that project,” he explained.

This multi-faceted project comprises six components namely a retrofitting training programme, preparation of a local area plan for the Carib Territory, institutional strengthening and capacity building, construction of access road, enterprises and cultural development facility and construction of resource centers.

To date three components of the project have been completed.

The entire project is being implemented at a cost of EC$ 8.618-million.

Today’s event will begin at 3:00pm at the Carib Council’s Office in Salybia.

Meantime a signing ceremony for the second phase of the construction for houses funded by the Chinese government will also take place today in Bataca.

“We will see the construction of 17 houses under that project. It is the second phase of the Chinese funded housing program. The first phase saw the construction of 10 houses which will be allocated soon,” Graneau said.

We welcome these development but Mr minister we need sustainable and revolving monetary programes to generate income by the masses for the masses. The kalinago territory is the constituency receiving so much but little is being done. Instead in your ministry there is confusion, your head of department is on a family drive to only better her people while the needy remains with nothing. For example Her family memeber will get close to $28,000 for housing , The present kaliago cheif , the same one who said that funding should be revolving is getting pretty close to $20,000 for completing he mansion. not saying that they should not get but there are those who are more in need. IF you all don’t pay attention to what is going on this housing project and and capacity building funds i’m going to expose everything that i know. And this will determine the fate of the present parlrep. Please take heed or you will lose the next election if you don’t take and make changes now. The truth will be out there soon about all those getting money from your government

LAND IS MONEY.this government is wasting time and money. their heads must be up their.the start of development in the kalinago territory is not roads or building little houses for the ppl to live in..it starts with new legislation to relieve these people from a flawed British idea of a carib teritory and allow them to own land with Cert. of titles. even a fool knows that without cert of title for land life is basicaly going to be moving staggered in a european structured society. futhermore it’s common sense, building a road is short term employment, and wen the road is done u can’t make money out of it. the social lives of the people has to be be improved before any development takes place. Improvements in their social lives in terms of ownership of land titles in which they could access loans which in effect will start generating an economy among the true Dominican people. why not use the money to establish a branch of NBD to suit the developing needs of the kalinago people. the government needs to start looking for ways to generate a longterm revolving economy within the kalinago teritory. an economy that will lead to better life among the people and move them forward. above all tho the key is improving the level of education which is the cure to poverty. it’s about time something is done which allows the people to do things for themselves!
