The Parliamentary Representative for the Grand Bay Constituency Justina Charles is hoping that the availability of a new Police Station will help address crime and violence in the south.

Charles was speaking before the official opening of a new $3.7 million police station in Grand Bay carded to get underway from 4 pm today (Tuesday).

The Grand Bay Police Station was previously located in a rented building for over 12 years.

Charles said it is government’s hope that peace will now prevail in the communities the new station will serve.

“Now that we have a new police station, with more space and an improved environment, we are hoping that will serve as an impetus for them (the police) to continue to work. We hope to see an improvement in the work of the police officers and a greater presence of the police in the communities,” she explained.

The construction of the facility has been in the pipeline for several years but official construction began in August, 2010.

It will serve the communities of Fond St Jean, Petite Savanne, Bagatelle, Dubique, Grand Bay, and Tete Morne.

It comprises three separate apartments which will cater for male and female officers and a sergeant.

The new building will also include storage space, offices, garage area, temporary holding cells, generator house and water storage tanks.

Meantime, 10 single parents in the south will be presented with the keys to their new homes today.

Charles said all the communities that are benefiting, are happy with the recipients.

“We had about 33 persons who had applied for houses and out of that, we looked at the socio economic situation of all and to see whether they were employed and could assist themselves. We felt among the 33, the ten were the most in need,” she explained.

The new police station and the houses were funded by the government of Venezuela.

Hello. DNO you showing a photograph from the ground breaking for the New Police Station which goes back to 2010. Why didn’t you send a reporter with a photographer to take a picture of the new Station. Anyway I have a lot of family in Grand Bay and I hope this new Station will bring additional resources to the area which will contribute to the safety of all our citizens. I hope we will hold the Commanding Office of the precinct responsible if He/She don’t reduce crime .

A new police station is one of the things I read the police and Grand Bay residents said they wanted in the research conducted by Dr. Peter St. Jean in 1996 and in his book, Lessons from Grand Bay. I wonder if it will make a difference, and how that will happen. I wish well for our Grand Bay community.

Election must be around the corner. Mrs Charles, building a police station does not solve the issue of crime in our community. Creating employment does, it reduces the dependency on Government hand outs.

We are a people of character, hard working, self determination. We are leaders in our own rights. Grand Bayrians are never followers, we always lead. Wether it was the revolt against slavery, or the movement to lead Dominica into independencem we stand ready for the challenges that lay before us. We cant give up on the ideals, that this country was founded on.

It is about time you and your Government stop taking advantage of the people of Grand Bay. Your Late Husband, the great Grand Bayrian, would not have put up with the nonesense that is going on. Speak up and defend Grand Bay.

I am sure the Late John Fabian gave you a few words of wisdom. You must know if you stand for something the community will stand with you. The Late Pierre Charles new that. The Community always knew where he stand on an issue; wether they agree with him or not. They respect him, because he always was a man of his word.

You know as well as any thinking Grand Bayrian, that the Skeritt Labour Party has no interest in developing the young talents in Grand Bay.

As a young Grand Bayrian; You and your Government have not produce or create a development plan that will address the concerns of the community.

The United Workers Party Build the Pirere Charles Secondary School for the the people of Grand Bay and they did not vote for one of their best prinicipals from Grandbay ,
Mr Henderson, they voted for hard Labour. The Labour Party build a Police station with Prison Cells for the people of Grand Bay let us call it the Justina Charles Police Station to manners Grandbay people and they will vote for her for more hard labour..Are these people IDIOTS.

Justice, we should share the credit for the building of the Pierre Charles Seconday School with the Freedom Pary administration.

They had secured the financed from the British Government for building of the School. Just beause they were voted out of office before the actual construction of the school started, that should not take away thier contribution to the building of the school.

The Freedom party has always contribute to Grand bay, aven when Grand Bay turn away from the freedom party, they still had projects for the community. the mopo road, the Grand Bay hospital and fire station is just a few to mention.

peace wil prevail because of a new police station. peace will not prevail if there is no justice. and justice is stricter laws and undisturbed policing. when politicians stop mingling in police lawful duty then peace will prevail. not because of a new building.

Now Justina tell us how the construction of a building will contribute to the reduction in crime in the area?

Did you provide more police officers to patrol the area?

Besides more comfortable quarters, did you equip them with the tools to better fight crime?

Do you have a community policing program to get people to report crime to the police?

My lady, s building in and of itself will do little to deter crime.

I did not know we had no peace in the communities the new station will serve.

I’m ashamed to read the incredible utterances from those who are bought, forgot their real sense the village needs, and allow their selfishness to pre-dominate over their spiritual faculties.

The government lied to the Grand Bay community. They were told that the area was designated for a medical school, which was never on the planning board. Grand Bay has been constantly deceived and lied to by these political liars who know exactly what to do to buy their votes during election time.

As far as I’m concerned, if a community cares less about its needs, does not demand decisive representation from those who are paid with monies from taxes they pay, certainly, they deserve what they get. Maybe the DLP sees the community as a warlike people, and the new station is the answer to their fear.

I am a strong believer that the Almighty God only helps those who are willing to fight for their rights to help themselves.
