Over $270,000 for Grand Fond Constituency

The Government of Dominica continues to make funds available for several projects in the Grand Fond constituency.

Over $200,000 has been put to work for the eradication of pit latrines in that constituency.

In an interview with GIS News, Hon Member of Parliament for the Grand Fond constituency, Ivor Stephenson, says he is pleased that modern washroom facilities are being installed in 25 homes.

“On the list of persons identified are some physically-challenged, the elderly and single parents.”

Hon Stephenson spoke of another project which is ongoing in his constituency: the poultry programme where six men and two women are engaged in rearing broilers to supply the national abattoir.

Government is spending about $70,000 on this project. This includes the construction of chicken coops, provision of chicks, feed and other supplies and a stipend for those employed.

“The persons who have been identified for the pilot programme are learning from the education component from the Dominica State College as well. We are winding up now…in fact, sometime this week, the birds will be slaughtered. I’m happy to report that in the six weeks, the selected persons have gotten the practical and theoretic knowledge.”

The MP says that more individuals will be trained in the poultry business after this module has been completed.

At face value you may shout good job,but on the other hand one can also wonder Why is government involves in building toilets for people.? An effective government would be creating the environment for the private sector including foreign investors to invest in the country so that the citizens can be gainfully employed and get rid of their pit latrine. The central government should take care of the roads, schools, hospitals etc.I have no problem for the physically challenged.Too often these politicians love giving hand outs just for winning an election.
I am not writing because I belong to the opposition,I am not a Worker and not Labour.

All Labour pal rep getting money for their Constituency, what about the SIX Pal Reps who are UWP ? The people who voted them are they not DOMINICANS ? Do the Government have responsibility for them too.We are watching.

Ivor, we hear you; the government is spending seventy thousand dollars on the project. I demand an explanation, as to whether this is a government owned project, or privately owned project.

If it is privately owned, are the recipients of the seventy thousand dollars responsible to pay back the money they receive from the profit they are expected to make from the sale of Chicken?
Or is the money simply another handout to the supporters of the Labor Party?

It seem to me you have forgotten to name the source of this give away money; shouldn’t the money be a loan on which interest should be paid, assuming the Chicken, and Cops industry produce profits?

      Good question”
“Or is the money simply another handout to the supporters of the Labor Party?

This is government money laundering just to show the pretence of “Something’s Happening…”

Bunch of political idiots………..we need an audit that this is not state owned stolen money.

David Cameron last speech on #10, Above all it was about turning around the economy. And with the deficit cut by two-thirds, two and a half million more people in work and one million more businesses, there can be no doubt that our economy is immeasurably stronger.

I’m all for decentralized government and only hope that there is proper accounting for the monies that keep being given out. However are these monies anywhere in the government budget under the appropriate area where they need to be? or is el Supremo dolling out favour buying cash? Skerritt does not believe in doing things by the book so I’m concerned

Why isn’t Mr Stephenson a full Minister? I would argue that he has been twice victorious at the polls, yet he is confined to the position of Parliamentary Secretary – a junior Minster, while others who never stood on a campaign platform; never took blows from the opposition, enjoy the title, prestige and perks of full Minster. Why is Mr Stephenson taking this? I would also argue that Mr Stephenson is a well-qualified and experienced public health specialist. He was formally trained in Jamaica, and boasts his diploma in public health. On the other hand, there are full Ministers who boast no certificate except their birth certificate. Why is Mr Stephenson taking this? Finally, I would argue that Mr Stephenson, (along with Parliamentarians like Mrs Charles, Dr McIntyre, Mr, Blackmorre, Ms Daniel, & Mr St Jean) probably has the most experience in public service, having given many years of service to the State. So why is Mr Stephenson taking that?

That is why, he should distance himself from this corrupt government. What does he stand for, what are his morale standings in politics. Why does he continue to be aligned with this corrupt government? To move from a civil servant to be a civil boom boom fly under questionable Skerrit also labels him as part of this corrupt DLP group. Be a man and strand off.

Imagine complaining months after the occurrence. Consider residing in a big country and there was a summer storm or ice storm in winter and no electricity and water. Most residents had no water to bathe; brush their teeth and flush their toilets for a few days; others for weeks/months depending where they resided. They did not have a cup of water or hot coffee to drink.
Some went to neighbors who were fortunate to have water; others went for miles in search of water. Some had no food; their food got spoiled. These were only part of their dilemma.
It was no easy feat for them. They did not complain. They did not blame the Government nor Hydro. It was the work of nature. They made do with what they could.
When lights and water were restored, they were elated. You know what, they soon forgot about their discomfort except to reminisce.
People who reside in such countries could teach you a thing or two on how to survive when a disaster strikes.

Where the government getting the money it is spending so lavishly on so-called projects? Perhaps the Venezuela experience might give policy makers pause as they dish out this largess.

Shame on Mr. Stephenson to boast of the eradication of Pit Latrines as a major develpment for the Grand Fond constituency. This is a myopic view of development. Invest in your constituency, create jobs and as a result the people will be empowered and will not for to depend on the government for flushing toilets.

I am surprised at your comment or should I. Have you considered some who are elderly and others who are unemployed?
Did you not read what he stated? “On the list of persons identified are some physically-challenged, the elderly and single parents.”
Obviously, if you can afford to have a toilet at your house, you will not need government assistance.
Who are those in need of jobs whom you know? Some people are unemployed because they did not complete school. These will find it difficult to obtain employment. What type of employment could they obtain if they lack the necessary skills?
You could do something for especially the youths. Educate and discipline them to remain in school and graduate so that they could obtain a good paying job.
Some blame the government because of their inability to obtain one. They must first consider themselves and how they spent their time at school and for how long when they had the opportunity.

Some of you can make strange comments. Anyway, I do think some of you exaggerate – make up stories to debase and criticize the government. You are always at it. This is a shame. You also lack respect for authority.
Do you know someone who is residing in a house and has no food to eat? If they have no food to eat they know they can ask the government and they will get a certain amount of money to assist them.
If you know of such people, you could assist them by informing them where they could go for financial help.
