Vehicles belonging to the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force will now be better identified by the public as new police vehicle markings have been instituted.
Dominica’s Chief of Police, Cyril Carrette, says the new vehicle markings on the police vehicles stand out and will allow the public to differentiate them from civilian vehicles.
“The reason for doing that is because you will be able to identify police vehicles very easily. It will allow for persons to make requests. When one sees the vehicle passing, you can stop the vehicle and you will be sure that it is a police vehicle and without any doubt in your mind that it is a police that you are dealing with. We want to ensure that the officers driving those vehicles, as well, put on the Government uniform to drive those vehicles,” he said.
Carrette said that an emergency contact number 999, in addition to the station number and the name of the station will be marked on all police vehicles.
“You notice from the side of the vehicle, you have the emergency number and the station number as well along with the name of the station on the vehicle. There are different white vehicles in Dominica, but when you see this vehicle pass, you know definitely it is a police vehicle,” he pointed out.
Carrette says further, the intention is to have all police vehicles painted in the same colour and marked with such identification.
“It takes a bit of time and if you notice this vehicle is white. All police vehicles are not white. So, we will have to ensure that we have a proper contrast of this against the vehicle. That is the reason we started with white and it looks beautiful. I am not certain if we would be able to do the same on the other coloured vehicles or whether we have to put all the colours. This is just for demonstration and then we will continue from there,” he stated.
why a van and not a car or SUV
Whereas constructive criticism is always healthy, there seem to be some idiots who just happen to have been born on this lovely piece of Heaven called Dominica who seen hell bent on making this blog a “Dominica Haters Club”. They aim to make it seem to the world that nothing good happens here, and that we are a bunch of bumbling fools.
lol this is standard all over the world, you telling me this country has never had marked police vehicles
Do you actually live here, fool?
I have been thinking for a very long time why are not the vehicles belonging to all government institutions not painted and marked to be identified with the institution that they represent like in the days when we were under the British? So this is a good move, but the police needs proper police vehicles, vans not pickups especially when they have to go out and carry out arrest or tranport prisoners or those detained.
are these the exact words of the chief of police? man sound uneducated.
WHY CANT WE SIMPLY RECOGNISE AN EFFORT TO MAKE THINGS BETTER FOR THE PUBLIC, WHY DO WE FAIL TO DISPLAY OUR TRESURE TROVES OF INTERGRITY WHEN WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO. IS THIS INITIATIVE A BAD IDEA? WHY IS THE CHIEF BEING ATTACKED AND REDICULED. SOMEDAY SOME OF YOU WILL WISH AND CRY FOR THOSE VERY POLICE OFFICERS.
This is a long time coming.
I believe more than anything marked police vehicles are a very effective deterrent.I live in NYC and I see the effect the appearance of an NYPD squad car has. Also as a little boy in Roseau in the 70’s I witnessed the effect of the blue police “Hillmans” with their blue rooftop light.
But I believe we really need to standardize the base color. White is good, if anything it’s probably the cheapest paint. Even when “friendly governments” are making the donations we should insist on white.
Yes we will still need unmarked cars. I don’t think we expect the CID, Special Branch, Drug Squad and the like to operate out of marked vehicles.
vague idea
The police logo/ coat of arms is an asset. But the police officers should never be caring their families in those vehicles.
ANON IS NOW GONE
REMEMBER PHILLIP TIMOTHY
YOU SOUND LIKE DARREN SAMMY ……… TWO LOSERS ……………. CHUPES
GO ARREST LASTBORN
Great job .i love that.however we also need some civilian vehicles so you all can go undercover to catch those criminals in their act such as homosexuals. Then we will take them to court and charge them for buggary.By the way,are their homosexuals in the police force or the court?cause that could compromise effective prosecution.
I have a strong feeling you homo!!!
You seem to be fighting your demons.
Mr Commisioner thats a very Goood Start on your par but more can or will be done i hope so.
I hope that the majority of them are not vans but cars.
I ask why a van? If people are arrested will they be driven to the Police Station in a van? This open concept may not appear to be safe for those, if arrested as well as for the Police who would be guarding them.
yawn… yawn… yawn!!!!!
i hope this helps in preventing officers from using them for personal business
Sorry Mr. Carrette the improvement is good but trust me it will not make a difference. People have been able to identified Police vehicle before and when those police in their business you can try to stop them all you want but they will not stop. I have a personal experience when i tried to stop a Police Vehicle passing by while we villagers tried to assist a young man who feel in a cliff. The Vehicle was marked with a big “POLICE” sign and the officer did not stop. Good luck but you all must be strict on the officer.
At that time, due to the serious nature, you should have reported it to the Chief of Police.
Thats a good start.
I realize some of the vehicles the Police uses are not specifically manufactured for them, but when purchasing, can’t one color be purchased? I think that would make them more easily identified.
All Police vehicles in the country should be of one color. I cannot figure out why they should be of different colors. It does not make sense. I hope this is now changed.
Long over due. The only thing missing is the police logo/ coat of arms. Let’s make it real international so visitors and rsidents alike can easily identify police vehicles. Thanks Mr Carrette and the rest of the police service. However i have one question.Did you guys have any public consultations on the matter? That would have been a plus as many of our citizens are serving or have served in international and regional police forces. Good move.
Whoever came up with this design needs to be jailed.
Carrette how about putting police lights on the top and sirens
yawn-yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Thanks! It was about time.
All Police vehicles should be the same colour, say, white, in order to have the same colour markings which will make them all easy to identify at once, even from a distance. I also hope that our technology has been upgraded in that different flashing siren lights are on the roof top of the vehicles in case of emergencies when they should be turned on. Also there are radios installed in the vehicles in order to respond quickly to calls or emergencies. Nice to know that there is an emergency contact number, 999. In America it is 911. Now, Policemen who are in the hierarcy level, such as the Police Chief, his assistant, Superintendents, and so on, would have to have different colour vehicles with different markings. Good job!
999 has always been there since the days of Dominica Telephone
good thing cause dat blue alba police ride not stoping me fo nothing!
