Salybia MP hopes to eradicate pit latrines in constituency

Darroux is taking aim at pit latrines in his constituency

Parliamentary Representative of the Salybia Constituency and Minister for Kalinago Affairs, Casius Darroux has revealed that the Ministry of Finance has approved $539,000 for the eradication of pit latrine in that constituency.

The project will be done under the ongoing sanitation program and works are expected to begin in January 2017.

“We have $539,000 being approved by the Ministry of Finance towards the eradication of pit latrines,” Darroux told DNO on Wednesday.“We are going to start in the Sineku community since it is one of the biggest communities in the Salybia Constituency.”

He stated that 49 families from Sineku will benefit from that programme.

“Also we want to start the program also in Atkinson, so that we eradicate pit latrine in Atkinson and Sineku,” he noted.“Then we are going to move on to the other communities to ensure that every community is dealt with, so that by the end of this coming year, in the territory we will have eradicated all pit latrines.”

Darroux said he hopes that the Kalinago Territory, Atkinson and Antrizle will be the first communities for us to eradicate pit latrines on the island.

Meantime, Darroux revealed that works have started on houses made from material donated by the government of Korea for single families in his constituency.

“We have started the foundation for three families…,” he stated. “We have one in Concord, one in Bataca and the other in Gullet River.”

He said from the estimate the structures cost about $42,000.

“That’s for material and construction but labour is another additional cost,” he explained. “We have started three foundations…then we will continue with the physical structure itself, other than just the foundation. We are hoping to complete seven and then we will move on up to the 35 individuals who were identified can be benefited.”

The seven houses are expected to be completed by February 2017.

Are you going to give them free water to use the toilet too? this is nothing but a political ploy and i am sure it won’t cover the entire territory, and the houses hope your boss is kind enough to make one available to you since you still live at your parents home.

Look at it this way. In this age, every home should have a decent toilet.
At least the new toilets should be a convenience. Imagine visiting a home and you have to use a pit latrine. The residents will not have to be embarrassed when they have visitors and they want to use the toilet and due to lack of it must send their visitor to the pit latrine.
Nothing happens before its time. Everything happens in time. The time is right to install those pit latrines. I am certain the residents will be happy and appreciative. They will thank the PM and the Minister for installing them.
This article is interesting. Issues always bring out the opinions, advice and suggestion of readers. This is what this one did, as all other issues.

Is that the legacy of this DLP administration? can you guys stop flashing this Pit Latrine thing on social media to give the international community the impression that we are a pit latrine nation just catching up with the rest of the world. Punjab PhD who is giving a negative impression of our country tell me.

    December 17, 2016

This is not what you should be focusing on Mr. Darroux, if you want to do something for your people , empower them . Let the people in the territory have a land tittle to their property. They were the first inhabitants . So nothing will help them if when they cannot get a loan in the bank to make a good house WIth a good toilet.
EMPOWER People . They are not stupid they know they Need
survey and divide the Land . Ownership to property . Nothing wrong in that.

for some who hates using a flush toilet because when it drops it splatters water to the butts, and prefers pit toilet, to have a change of heart towards its phasing out is amazing, hats Mr. Clay, and lol.

    • The Truth Be Told
      December 17, 2016

Do you not know how to use the flush toilet? You do not continue to sit on it and flush it. Or you do not flush it while sitting on it. If this is what you do, obviously germs will go into where they should not, if you know what I mean. You clean your body parts and then get up and flush the toilet.
I read on a health website that, the cover should be closed over the toilet seat before flushing it to avoid germs flying in the bathroom. It makes sense. You can always clean the cover.
The flush toilets will be healthier, cleaner and should smell better than the pit latrines.

It must be a joke for, prior to installing it inside the house, a proper room should be built.

The government should introduce a user fee like the UWP did so that people under eighteen and over sixty pay for treatment so that enough revenue can be had to take care of the people. Medicine is very expensive and I am sure those critics wouldn’t mind paying for their health.

In England there is a national health service which you pay for whilst working. It,s ones interest to take care of their health. Your health is priority instead of spending money on booze and fags etc etc

Thousands of dollars for DLP supporters in this project. Would like to know if the Environmental Health
inspect and approve these septic tank projects. Will these recepients have to get Govt to pay their water bills as well? Got to ask because this place has so much unemployment.

  12. Voice of Reason
    December 15, 2016

While the eradication of pit latrines is a plausible idea, what good is it when there is not a reliable water supply? What good is it when the required septic tank for waste disposal is not part of the eradication program? How will the “poor” families afford the water required for use of the toilet? Isn’t that putting the cart before the horse?
Why doesn’t the government focus attention on solving the problems of the masses, to include better infrastructure, as opposed to the few? Foster better working relations with the private sector in an effort to create jobs and the working men and women will determine their needs – to include the type, color and style of toilet they desire.
The government takes pride in being the country’s largest employer…..why? Encourage entrepreneurship, build strong relationships with the private sector and watch the economy grow instead of depending solely on the passport economy!
    Where is the vision? Smh

How many pit latrines are there in Dominica so? after 4 years of war on them, the government can’t win?
are those toilet are stronger than Skerrit or what :-D :-D

  16. Today you are beating the same drum, signing the same tune, and dancing to the lyrics you dance to prior to the last election. By now one would imagine there are no pit-hole left in your village filled with feces and water, smelling the place.

Your talk is irritating; who cares if you eradicate the pit-holes, talking about it causes a stench in my nostrils. You should not be looking for a feather in your hat for eliminating like that. You should be ashamed to even talk about that primitive state of life in Dominica in the twenty-first century, which is almost ending.

What about the rest of Dominica where the filth exists, if you have a program cleaning up feces, of which you are the supervisor, you must ensure the feces is cleaned up all over the island, don’t make it appear as if the problem is on the Reservation alone it is all over Dominica.

Your government actually promotes the pit-hole adventure, buy giving people what you all call houses with kitchen, and toilet…

    • Finally:

Your government actually promotes the pit-hole adventure, buy giving people what you all call houses with kitchen, and toilet facilities, they still go outside and squat over a pit-hole filled with the mixture, that when they defecate, and it drops in the mess it splatters upwards on their gluteus.

    • “giving people what you all call houses with kitchen, and toilet facilities, they still go outside and squat over a pit-hole filled with the mixture, that when they defecate.”

That should read ” giving what you call houses without kitchen, and toilet facilities” and you know the rest, what happens when the squat over that six feet deep, five feet wide hole with mixture.

But you know what? I would like a few of your red devils who vote Labor, when the the get disoriented when the off load, and fall into that deep hole. I can imagine how that red devil, red cloak, and on their face would look coated, and dye with that thing that comes out of their belly!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

  17. Curious me
    December 15, 2016

Eradicating pit latrines is all well and good. I, for one, am all for it and for development on a whole.

I need to know though whether running water is available in all communities in the Kalinago territory in order to facilitate the change over?

Also, for each flushing toilet being installed, is there going to be a septic tank and soak away, or will they be constructed in such manner that there will be communal septic tanks and soak away? I am referring to several flushing toilets being hooked up to one septic tank and soak away?

I am curious to get a response so that I can better view the picture.

Is there a bigger strategic plan for the Kalinago people rather than in fast food intervention announcement pumps into ears once in a blue moon having the DLP on the run on their back foot and hopeless and abuse government.? This toilet business has been around for a long time and when is it the Kalinago people are going to have jobs to earn their own money and get off from this most abusive patronising hand-outs of Dominicans in poverty created by this corrupt Labour government led by inept Skerrit. Darroux, you are talking nonsense and is that the best you can offer as a Christmas to address this shituation created by your corrupt government. Shame on you. How long you going to have your people remain as second hand beggars?

But wait Casius, I remember clearly our hon. Prime Minister personally declaring war on pit latrines over three years ago. You mean after all that time your people still have to use a hole in the ground? What happened to that war? Was it ever fought or was it just another soundbite.
Of course people need decent toilet facilities but I hope you will also give them the running water for flushing and washing their hands and make sure they have the money to pay Dowasco. Good luck my boy.

These programs are not as simple as they sound. We need water for the toilets, toilets, septic tanks or sewerage systems. While it will improve sanitation in one place, those below will have a challenge. We can probably try a new type of toilet: BioLet, maker of one of several composting toilets on the market. The Swedish company with a U.S. office in Ohio sells a high-tech composting toilet that uses electricity, thermostats, heating elements, mixer motors and fans – but no water. Or may be Nature Isle can come up with a solution for the world…

This does not solve the problem of empowering the people. If the people are empowered they will work and will afford their pit latrines. Helping families in need is good, but if their relatives children etc are empowered they will be able to take care of themselves and their families. This is just going to make the situation worst in the long run. There will just be a generation who will just sit and wait on government. Just as has happened with Venezuela..
