Ships ready to dock at Cabrits National Park following successful pier restoration

The pier before and after restoration

Local investment and hospitality company Range Developments is pleased to announce that restoration of the Pier in Cabrits National Park is completed.

The project has been undertaken in partnership with M/V Pacific Hope, a ship that is dedicated to supporting the local community through the provision of medical care and construction services via its dedicated volunteers.

The Pier was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria and as a result, ships have been unable to dock there ever since. The work will partially restore the functionality of the Pier, enabling ships to access Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley.

Dr. Lenox Honeychurch, Curator of Fort Shirley said: “We are very fortunate that this assistance has come at this time as we are preparing to welcome international students for a summer program at Fort Shirley who will need the Pier to access their dive boat. We also need to prepare for the 2018-2019 yacht and tourist cruise season.”

Following the completion of the restoration work – which has been undertaken in co-operation with the Port Authority – M/V Pacific Hope is able to dock at the Pier and provide much needed medical services for local patients.

This isn’t the first time that Range Developments has collaborated with M/V Pacific Hope. The two organizations are currently working together on the reconstruction of CALLS – a local centre for youth – which was also damaged by Hurricane Maria. Further collaborations between both organizations are also planned for the future.

Kamal Shehada, Development Director at Range Developments said: “The Pier in Cabrits National Park is an important community asset and restoring its functionality will enable its wider use for a wide range of beneficiaries. I would like to personally invite and encourage members of the community and associated organizations to join us in our ongoing efforts so that together we can benefit even more people.”

Range Developments hopes to build upon their social responsibility efforts by supporting other worthwhile community projects and initiatives.

So what about repairs to the rest of the facility, the buildings, washrooms etc? They were already in a terrible state before Maria, I can only imagine what they look like now.

Washrooms have never been a priority or part of Dominica’s development. When nature calls, head to the bushes near by.

You probably meant Sheep are ready to dock, because ships are not interested in portsmouth since Ian sent carnival away. better yet buses are ready to cross over bridges that don’t cost $18 million dollars.

Good job at repairing the walkway and jetty, but the railings need to be be installed to make it safe for anyone using the jetty. and that bat infested, mold infested and dilapidated cruise ship terminal which is unfit for human use also needs to be repaired, in addition to repairing the tender wharf.

    Lest we forget.

Whose fools are Dominicans? The Skerritt DLP Gov’t went to Parliament, soon after the elections of 2014, changed the said Laws, carved out 15, Yes 15 acres of our land from the Cabrits National Park and gave all that land to the foreign co., Range Development.

As if that wasn’t enough, Skerritt’s DLP Gov’t issued Range Development our passports to sell to make MILLIONS, so that Range development could build the hotel there.

So fellow Dominicans, Range Development, the foreign co. got our land and our passports free, because we have not heard otherwise,.

Yes, the foreign “investors” came empty -handed, with nothing.

Whose hotel will it be, if completed. Big Secret, because our land was given and our passports were given to sell to make millions. Will it be a hotel for the people of Dominica as owners, or will it be for the foreign co. who came empty-handed?

So whose fools are we, if Range Development fix a pier? PR for sympathy.

How can Dominicans tolerate that sort of behavior of Roosevelt Ian, and the rest of these corrupted people in government. Every comment I read seems to acknowledge something is wrong; about the arrangement, yet you people are not rising up against Roosevelt and overthrow his corrupted regime!

When we acknowledged something is wrong and we talk about it, we need to go beyond simply talking and act; in this case the action that should be taken is the overthrow of Ian, Roosevelt, and the gang of corrupted “T…..s” in government!

Them fellas really had Portsmouth neglected boy. I would love to see the sea push back from the old. walking trail and have an expanded platform under the cliff all the way to the port building of the Cabrits. There is so much things the government can to to uplift that area but them boys eyes are closed. They are going to wait until the sea takes the road or the cliff collapse unto that small road. Even during the jazz festival cars could pack on the extended area people could chill on it. So much can be done to that area.

Hopefully this will encourage more cruise ships to call at Portsmouth. The sailing schedules have already been set by and large right through the 2019/2020 season and so far only the Royal Clipper and Star Flyer are scheduled to call, mostly in tandem on a fortnighly frequency between 12 Dec. Of this year and the end of Marh of next year and similarly for the cruise season 2019/2020. The only other vessel listed is Saga’s Spirit of Discovery, scheduled to call at Portsmouth on 17 Dec. of this year. Perhaps Range will use the facility to bring in their guests for the Kempinski by fast ferry from the French islands in the absencce of adequate air connections at present.

For your information Range has already constructed their own dock at Bell Hall, Douglas Bay.

But I get the point mentioned above by some that they are using Dominica’s passport money to bolster up their public relations image with Dominicans.
