St. Peter’s Fisheries Cooperative gets adopted

President of WCCCU, Patrickson Albert presents check to Damian Frank, a Dominica State College student

The West Coast Cooperative Credit Union (WCCCU) has announced that it has officially adopted the St. Peter’s Fisheries Cooperative.

At a ceremony held on Wednesday at the National Development Foundation of Dominica’s (NDFD), it was also revealed that WCCCU would be awarding a $4,000 scholarship based on need and merit, to Damian Frank, a Dominica State College student .

In adopting the fisheries cooperative, WCCCU will be assisting with administrative personnel and a vehicle to transport the fishermen’s catch.

President of WCCCU, Patrickson Albert, said that they are proud, as a leading financial institution, to adopt a struggling non-financial cooperative.

“The National committee oversee the occasion and found it fit to suggest that financial cooperatives credit unions should adopt non-financial cooperatives and as such the west coast took the lead and we did adopt the St. Peters Fisheries Cooperatives  and we are proud,” he said.

The president of the St. Peter’s Fisheries Cooperatives in his remarks, identified two areas that need dire attention in the organization.

“You cannot always count on volunteers to keep your accounts up to date, neither can you depend on them to run your business,” he said. “So we felt that this was one that had to be taken care of. Secondly, we are in the fishing business and it is important that we move the fish all through … it was an opportune time for the WCCCU to do that and I think our prayers were answered,” he noted.

According to him  the St. Peter’s cooperative was in ‘prime position’ for adoption and they would be increasing and expanding their membership base, thus increasing their revenue.

Great move! I suggested that measure over five years ago as a way of boosting the non-financial coops. Good to see that this is being initiated. hope other credit unions follow the example. Cooperatives are about people helping people to help themselves.
