Temporary bypass constructed at Cabanis following major collapse

The new bypass at Cabanis

A temporary bypass has been constructed in the Cabanis area for the benefit of Roseau Valley villages following a major collapse of the road in late December 2016.

After the collapse, authorities had closed the road and told motorists from Fond Canie, Trafalgar and Laudat to take the Copthall to Wotten Waven Road as an alternative route.

“What we have done is created a sort of a little bypass,” MP for the Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. Colin McIntrye said. “Not the big bypass yet, a little bypass in the area because just after you climb the Copthall Hill the road is perfect and when you start climbing up a little more it’s also very perfect. When drivers get to the area where we suffered the major edge failure we have created sort of a bypass towards the edge of it, far enough and safe enough…”

According to Dr. McIntyre, the government is also pursuing the Wotten Waven Road which created a problem in that, “ there is not much that could have been done on the road at the time.”

“Because when you look at the cruise season, the traffic of the entire valley through Wotten Waven, the Wotten Waven people and even our visitors, it was tremendous amount of traffic on the road there in Wotten Waven,” he stated.

He made it clear that the plan is to continue working on the Cabanis area.

“Vehicles can go up and down through Cabanis and has eased up the strain of vehicular traffic on the Trafalgar side,” Dr. McIntyre stated. “As you know as wel,l we are also constructing the approaches to the Wotten Waven to Trafalgar Bridge, which when you have so much construction taking place it is a major problem for road development. I feel happy that we are on board with it and what we are working on right now is designs for the two edge failures on the Cabanis area as well as other areas in the Roseau Valley where we can really improve and fix up our roads.”

the thing is the contractors get a job to build a road so that is all they do, build a road. No gutters, no lights no sidewalks nothing but just a road you can drive on.

Engineers. Remember to put in proper drainage this time. There was no drainage, no culverts or deep drains in the last road and the water was just sitting there seeping through the tarish until the whole road collapsed. This time remember: DRAINGE…DRAINAGE.. DRAINGE..!

DNO, do you have to endlessly directly quote the Minister? His poor command of the English Language puts him in a bad light, and your extensive quotation of the Minister’s speech is not helpful to your readers especially the school students. As a newspaper, DNO should be encouraging the use of proper English.

(It is not ”the government is also pursuing the Wotten Waven Road” but ”The government is also pursuing the repair (or rehabilitation) of the Wotten Waven road.”

I hope the approaches and bridge in the Wotten Waven area is nothing like the nonsense that was constructed before, where it took an act of courage just to cross this ravine. Do the job right for once.

Let’s hope that the resulting road works are better than the reported phrasing of the Minister’s statement.

Josh Shaw relax yourself and stop calling people names. God does not like ugly for he first loved us. In Jesus Name this is not permanent. We need to listen, observe and learn and be patient. Jumping to conclusion won’t get us anywhere. Everything cannot be done at the same time. Do you have money to do all you want to do? Do not let a little education get you sobarrogant that you know it all like all those who want power by all means and will fabricate stories to get the populace esp those not so educated to be aroused in strife and anger. Nothing is hidden from God and he will judged righteously. Do not call people by those derogatory names like you just used. I would really like to see positive suggestions from the likes of you, the doctor, Francisco’s and all the others who openly spew hatred at the PM and others of the Labour Party. With you all hitting left, right, center, with no regrets, the PM and his team is doing a good job under such adverse conditions. I do…

Continued. I do not need any thumbs up. Any thumbs down won’t deter me. I owe allegiance to the King, Creator, LORD, Master of the Universe. I therefore pray for the Commonwealth of Dominica. God bless Dominica and thank you Father for blessing us in whatever way small as it may seem but you have the bigger picture plan for this nation. We trust you for you a Lord. Also Father, I pray for any negative persons who for reasons of hatred only daily look for negative against this blessed land. Who only have mischief against persons. Father sear their heart and convict them that they ask for forgiveness and change and renew their mind, their stony heart to a heart of love so they can love you first and then others . Pour your spirit upon them as only you can. I ask all of this in the Name of your son Jesus Christ. Amen and Amen.

It will come down again but from higher. Terrace that mountain side and put gabion baskets to hold down the soil and allow for quick veggitation growth. Patch work doesnt mean the job is fixed. AND PUT PROPER GUTTERING, that is why the road fell in the first place. the run off was undermining the road itself. i dont know, maybe im the only person who played with dirt and water when they were young.

actually no that wasn’t the cause of the slip. there was water running under the road most likely from a water source starting higher up. it was made worse by the heavy rains.

read the last sentence. runoff was undermining the road.

apparently, in Dominica the SMART thing to do is build roads with NO proper or NO drains at all, I see that ridiculous practice all over the island if water running on the road it WILL start to decay and limits its life
