Two modern police stations to be constructed

Two modern police stations at La Plaine and Calibishie are among priorities for the Dominica Government, according to an official statement.

The government says the two will be constructed at an estimated cost of EC$6.3 million.

It says that the proposed new facilities are in addition to the now almost completed Grandbay Police Station, with efforts being made to have fully equipped police stations in several communities.

The Salybia, Mahaut and Marigot Police Stations have also reportedly been refurbished, with works to commence on the Roseau Police Station shortly.

This is, of course good news. However, I wonder if, with our improved roads and superior communications we need that many separate police stations in Dominica today. We have a total of 18 stations, not counting police headquarter in Roseau or the unit at Morne Bruce, to serve a population of 70,000. I know we have our topographical difficulties but on a comparison basis that equates to 644 police stations for Brooklyn alone!Do the maths if you think this is absurd (Brooklyn has a population of just over 2.5 million). What we need is better efficiency, fewer people sitting at desks an more officers on the beat.

Colihaut had a proper police station with court room and a building to house the Sergeant i/c, now with the work being done by West Indies Aggregates, the Officers had to leave the premises, because of the frequent dust in the area. Now Government should demand the company to build a police station some place in Colihaut

    @Anthony P. Ismael,

The airport can support the aircraft all the CRJ700 needs is 5,131ft of runway. TDPD currently have 5,761ft. Moreover, the airport currently lands a B727, which requires more runway length than a CRJ700 the feet I quoted you is at maximum weight. People dod research before you open your mouth

Build these Police stations in the areas where crimes occur in order to have a larger Police presence. La Plaine is a peaceful place; we don’t need this facility here. It seems like a political move to secure the electorates here in La Plaine.

Such an idiotic comment! This must be one of the people who commented in La Plaine not having a police station. And being from La Plaine, how peaceful is it?

Hopefully, a bigger prison is next to separate juvenile, petty crime and major offenders. Also, to house the criminals that are walking the streets.

Pond Case Central also in need of a Police Station. That area is now developing with new homes and tourist site.

I remember that same area used to have a Police Station.

An automatic crime detector will be installed in each of them. As soon as you walk by the crime detector, it will beep if you are a crook. So stay away from those new police stations.

If you build it will they come. Martinique and Guadeloupe both have and they still won’t come. The Eagle is the only America carrier to go to them so, what make you think they will come to Dominica.

St. Lucia been paying them to come that has been costing the government a lot of money. They have been paying for empty seats when plane is filled to capacity.

Now, they realized that they are going broke.

It is nice to have those things, but feasibility studies need to be done. I would like to have one, but I am afraid it might become a drain to tax payers

The main issue is not an international airport, although it would be nice to have one. The issue is: An airport that conforms to international standards, including night-landing.
We know that a US registered aircraft will never land at Melville Hall at night, because of its location and FAA Regulations.

That being said, a totally new airport is required. If we can accommodate medium range jets such as the Bombardier CRJ-700, we would be ok.

As it stands, we are going nowhere fast with Melville Hall as it is presently constructed.

It’s a police station, not a play ground. I am more concerned i’s staff with capable law enforcement and the necessary tools and equipment to combat rising crime and violence…what about that.

But I understand your humour in the parking lot..most people will not even get the joke…lol

I agree with you, but you cannot eat an elephant in one bite, you have to eat it one bite at a time. Hope that makes sense to you.

  21. April 10, 2012

So what about Colihaut police station

    • Malatete
      April 10, 2012

it is about time the Colihaut and Colibistri police stations are amalgamated into one, efficient unit. They are less than 2.5 miles apart, along the same stretch of road. To still have two separate units so close to one another is an anachronism and an unnecessary expense, especially with the new road in place.
