West Bridge to open May 1

Rendition of the completed bridge

Roseau, Dominica (April 18, 2017) – The Ministry of Public Works and Ports is pleased to confirm that the new West Bridge in Roseau will open on May 1st. This confirmation comes following references made by Prime Minister Skerrit at recently held town hall meetings.

Minister for Public Works and Ports, the Honourable Miriam Blanchard, has provided details about the event planned for the opening. “The Government has planned an ‘open house’ styled event where the general public is invited to attend and witness the opening of the new West Bridge. There will be a few speeches followed by a ribbon cutting and then a symbolic ‘first drive’ onto the bridge. The date as you know is a public holiday as it falls on ‘May Day’ so we expect that many persons will travel to Roseau with their vehicles so that they too can christen the new West Bridge. The ceremony has been carded to begin at 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon of May 1st.”

The symbolic commencement of the replacement of the West Bridge took place on April 22nd, 2016 with a sod-turning ceremony. The new West Bridge forms part of the overall Roseau Enhancement Project.

Prime Minister Skerrit, at the sod-turning ceremony one year ago, spoke about the source of the funding that made the project possible.

“It is important to note that we are embarking on this major project this evening, not by imposing additional taxation on you, not by contracting costly loan financing, but we are able to undertake this major eighteen million dollars ($18 million) project by utilizing resources raised from our Citizenship by Investment Programme,” he said. “Ladies and Gentlemen we cannot underestimate the significance of such an achievement. Eighteen million dollars ($18 million) is a lot of money for a country like Dominica, particularly, post Tropical Storm Erika.”

What a deceptive photograph. So, you enter Roseau on a beautiful brand new bridge, only to find that your sense of smell is invaded from the malodorous stench lurking in the dirty smelly, drains that remain an eye sore and a source of blight for our people. Who could ask for anything more.

While Vincentians recently opened their international airport and Antigua the impressive new terminal building at V.C. Bird airport and other countries celebrating significant economic projects, the Government of Dominica is having a bacchanal to open a BRIDGE that replaces an old one.
In the early 1980s the Freedom Party opened the E.C.LoBLACK bridge 300 feet east of the Skerrit New Bridge, they also opened the twin bridges in Canefield and Layou. In the late 1990s UWP constructed the new Bath Estate bridge, the Belfast bridge and the Trafalgar bridge without any fanfare.
Kkerrit builds a ten million dollar bridge for $18 million and he has Dominicans jumping up. Who gets the extra $8 million. Price Steel $3 million, concrete $2.5 million, dredging $1.5 million labor $3 million. Profit $8 million. I challenge anyone to show the cost estimates and you’ll see concrete cost $1500 a cubic yard instead of $700.00. NICE bajans smiling Dominicans drinking and jumping up. fools paradise.

It will have escaped nobody’s attention that 1 May is International Workers’ Day, or in the case of Dominica more appropriately Labour Day. A red day affair. celebrated world-wide by socialist and communist movements in Cuba , Venezuela, N. Korea and the like, which over the years have come to represent one-party, totalitarian, dictatorial regimes. when the original concept was so different; the celebrations of workers’ rights and democracy., now oppressed.
The opening of the new bridge, which is beautiful by the way, on this day is no co-incidence and symbolic. I would not be surprised for the the leader of the country to use the occasion make an election announcement with an appeal for the granting of more power to himself.

May 1st is observed worldwide by unions and their members. It is a day for workers.
The communist governments remind their nationals of working hard – for them; overworking. Communist workers get nothing special from their government.
Whatever day May 1st falls in Canada, the unions and their members have a rally.
It is a day for workers to remind the government of their workers’ rights, etc. It is not a public holiday. However, it is a significant day for all workers.

Last year I drove across a bridge constructed by the villagers of Petite Savanne in the wake of tropical storm Erica. It is nothing pretentious, tree trunks supporting a deck of hardwood planks, but as a symbol of the fortitude of Dominicans it means more than all the other bridges put together. That is a bridge to be proud of!

“So we expect that many persons will travel to Roseau with their vehicles so that they too can christen the new West Bridge. Really Mr. Dear Leader. ” While you’re on the christening subject, when will the Geothermal Plant be opened? You spent millions of dollars on it with no resolution. How about the 50 room guest house in Portsmouth?
Any date on that one or is it lost in translation like the others. And the boat for farmers to export produce overseas?

Mr.%, You are still disputing the facts that Skerro ideology is far more superior than yours. In the last year what have you done to enhance the standard of living for the Dominican populace? There isn’t enough toilet paper to stop your diarrhea tongue and it is still running. Your self centered ways has earned you a special seat in the hall of SHAME. Are you really serious asking Skerro to give you credit for his accomplishments? Did you give your St.
Lucian counterpart credit for using his writing? Now you should become a functional member of society. YOUR tune Skerro must go is out dated. Give us new lyrics.

%,! Are you for real calling Skeritte a coward! Don’t you think we know a coward when we see one. You are using a symbol to disguise your self. A leopard can never change it’ skin. While you are running around like a headless chicken, Skerro portfolio is looking better day by day. %, Since Dr. Huckster NO longer has the time to write your memo, look at your standard of writing. Are you just like your mentor, Edo, who once sat on Good Morning American and could not compose a single sentence of his own. After a hurricane devastated the islands, he was asked, what do you need, his reply the same thing Antigua and St. Vincent need. Sorry I am a huckster, and in no way am I belittling the trade, but when a man is given a talent of being a Dr. and fail to utilize it, it will be taken from him. Dr. Huckster, being in a classroom you are making a contribution to society.

What you are missing out, is that at least the money did not go under the table, as your UWP leader suggested; it was there waiting for the right time to use it–and that time is now.

You guys are speaking without thinking; your minds are plagued with so much negativity, you cannot even speak a positive word when it is called for–so why not simply remain quiet.
