4.4% rise in CSEC passes compared to 2009

Minister St. Jean as he announced the results

A better pass rate of a 4.4 % rise among local students who sat this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Exams was recorded as compared to 2009.

The students covered 28 subject areas with 76.4% passes with grades I, II and III. One thousand and seventy-six (1076) students wrote a combined 6,377 subjects this year.

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development Hon. Peter St. Jean in announcing the results earlier today, said the accomplishments of the island’s youth, particularly the males, stands as a milestone achievement for the overall development and future of Dominica.

These outstanding males include Dennis L. Guye with nine grade 1s and one grade 2. He comes out of the St. Mary’s Academy (SMA), and stands as the best performer for the 2010 exams.

Two other SMA students –Denis F. Laurent and Liam K.P. Rolle -both having obtained nine grade 1s, closely follow Guye.

Denzel E. Coipel of the Dominica Grammar School comes in 4th with eight grade 1s and one grade 2 and one grade 3.

Twenty students made this year’s list of top performers and they come from schools across the island.

These schools include Convent High School, which entered students in 19 subject areas and recorded a pass rate of 96.5 percent; the Seventh Day Adventist School, which entered students in 16 subject areas with an 87.8 percent pass rate; Dominica Grammar School with 23 subject areas and an 84 percent pass rate; Orion Academy with 11 subject areas and an 81.4 percent pass return; along with North East Comprehensive which entered students in 19 subject areas and recorded a pass of 81 percent.

According to St. Jean, this year’s results were produced by the first batch of students exposed to the mandatory secondary education initiative introduced by Government in 2005. The introduction came as part of the implementation of Universal Secondary Education (USE) here in Dominica, he added.

For the first time in the island’s history nine of the 15 Secondary Schools are featured on the list of top performing students as compared to only six schools just last year.

congratulations to all the students who performed to the best of their potential at this years cxc exams. Keep up the good work. Special mention must be made of the boys. hats off to you guys. On the other side of the coin I must make mention of USE. We need to be honest and open where USE is concerned. I strongly hold to the view that the implementation of USE was a very big mistake. They normally say is who is the pot that feeling the heat so I am speaking out. Its very sad to see how the studets at grade six level show such disregard for common entrance. this is because they know that pass or fail they going high school anyway. that doesnt speak good for our education system…..

Off course a rise in passes is expected because there are more students being enrolled in High School. But we also have a significant rise in the number of drop-outs, doubles and work load on teachers and students and a crippling in the student’s performance (especially those students with special needs). We need the whole truth Mr. St. Jean because half truth is not the truth.
    Think of it people.

My fellow Dominicans, there may be “a rise in passes” but we have to remember that there are MORE students being enrolled in High School due to Universal Secondary Education and then compare it with the many “doubles” and drop-outs and larger classes with greater work loads on teachers and students. I think most of us are educated enough to logically analyze this statement by St. Jean and not take his cock and bull!!

Congratulation to all of the students who wrote CXC exams 2010. Your performance was remarkable, keep up the good work. For the records, Dominica SDA Secondary School, entered students for 17 subjects and we attained an average of 89.9. We are truly proud of all of our students. We give God all the praise and glory due to his name. Hats off to all of the teachers, you have done a great job. Those who humble themselves should be exalted. I encourage all of our students to place God first and see him work miracles on your behalf.

Success and best wishes for the new school year.

Congratulations to all the students who excelled, especially the students at SMA, your teachers must be doing something right! Don’t forget to thank them.

Those who did not do too well, don’t give up, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and proceed to correct the mistakes. Dreams can become reality if you are determined.

I wish that the powers that be would do right by our teachers, we cannot pay good teachers for their hard work and dedication, but we could treat them better!

If there is a rise in passes, then there is something good happening in the education sector in Dominica.

Congratulation to the educators, parents and students who put their shoulders to the wheel. Remember education is the key success and if our nation is to be successful in the future we need an educated populace.

Congratulations to all students who performed excellently at the CSEC examinations! Special applause to the students of the DGS and to the school. Denzel and others, you have made us proud!

The Dominica Grammar School has an 85.5% pass this year, a 6% improvement from last year. It is a tough job, but we are getting back there!

Percentages in the eighties!!! Wow!! Congratulations to all the students, especially the most outstanding ones and to all our teachers; both primary (who set the foundation) and secondary (who built on that foundation and prepared students for the exam). Hats off to the deserving parents. I salute you.

At a time when less than 50% of minority students in the USA graduate from high school, this is a milestone for the Commonwealth of Dominica. Keep up the good work teachers. When things are bad you get the blame. Bask in the success and give Jah the glory!!

The tenth paragraph of the article states that this result was produced by the first batch of the mandatory secondary education which was implemented in 2005. This is so not true. Wonder who gave that information. The Pierre Charles Secondary in Grand Bay was the ‘goat’ and has been exposed to the program for more than five years. Go do your home work on dat.

This school is the biggest secondary school on island, registered students in the most subject areas (23) and despite many difficulties still managed to produce satisfactory results and even have one of the top-performing students.
