A call for Dominica to raise the age of consent

Delia Cuffy-Weekes

50,000 signatures by November 25th is the aim of Delia Cuffy-Weekes in her efforts to get the government to move the age of consent from 16 to 18.

Cuffy-Weekes has started a petition for the cause in light of a recent explicit video involving minors released on a popular social network site and uploaded to several porn sites.

In an interview with Dominica News Online (DNO) she said “this is something that I have always been concerned about, but the recent incident involving the young women being exposed on the worldwide web in a pornographic video really upset me and it brought me to that point where I said something has to be done or else by next week we have all forgotten about it.”

She described the issue as a problem related to the Caribbean and said that it was one which needed the attention of the masses to be solved.

“If it is just one lone voice speaking to a parliamentarian or a minister then they will not listen to you but if you have more than half of the population of Dominica that they would like that action to be taken then the politicians will be very insensitive to ignore it because they are there to serve the people.”

Cuffy-Weekes added that the petition will be presented to the prime minister on November 25th, the day to reject violence against women and girls.

Thus far, the petition which was started yesterday, has made some progress. Cuffy-Weekes revealed that about 37 people had adopted the cause and about 20 people had signed the petition.

People interested in signing the petition can contact Delia Cuffy-Weekes or do so at link below:

The governments of civilized nations have an “age of consent” to protect the most vulnerable among us.

I personally agree with this. However, in reality the age of consent should be the date of one’s marriage. Sex before marriage is a sin the Bible calls “fornication”. The Bible tells us there are severe and eternal consequences for committing fornication. Please read Galatians 5:19-21. NOTE: “…they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Sex outside of marriage is a sin before OR after “the age of consent”. Reaching a certain age does not give people a licence to violate God’s holy laws.

The moral laws of God should be taught children in the home before they even begin school, and then reaffirmed in school, and in church.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, Evangelist.

If you can’t vote or drive before the age of eighteen why not the same for sex…a parent should have a say in their child life up to that age period as they are still looked upon as children and the parents still have to provide their daily needs for them.

I had the misfortune to view the video that went viral a few days ago. Raisng the age of consent because of the video makes no sense to me. its like mixing apples with oranges.
Surveys have proven that sexual activity begins as early as 9; this consent issue is only attempting to protect ladies 16-18. What about the girls 9-14? What are we as a society doing to protect these children? Should we make our laws a little stiffer for perpretrators who defile them at such a young age? Shouldn’t we be looking at getting more education out there to young ladies about self worth and pride in self etc? Shouldn’t we push them to participate in competitive sports or organise clubs for girls so that we get them active in other things. Or getting young parents skills to pass on to their girls, because sometimes its because parents themselves are not equipped to handle such then girls hear it from their friends and wish to explore. Our girls are crying out for help and we should do something,NOW. Not raising age of consent to 18, thats just helping out girls who don’t really need it. Physically at that age your body is ready for sex and if truth be told most young ladies have already done it by 18. What are we going to do with the men/women they did it with? We have to think this through. Where are we going to put the men/women. Education is the key.
I remember listening to a talk by Virgina Austrie Roberts(may her soul rest in peace)about loving yourself as a young woman, about pride and value. that when he calls you “fresh” for not allowing him to defile you , when he is ready for a real relationship he finds one of the fresh ones to be with.
We need to educate our children!!!!!!

    How wonderful!

But as a society what role are we setting for our young women when some of us as adults have lost our values?

We expose more, reveal more and the young people are watching and yes, learning…

During the carnival season, I am always shocked to see the appearance and behavior of young and older women… The entire town looks like a terrible, sleezy scene with regular and oversized women scandalously prancing about in there ever so revealiing, leave-nothing-to-the-imagination clothing…

It is disgusting and somehow we are promoting the idea of ‘cuteness’ ?????? Seriously?

Some costume bands now sell women UNDERWEARS with lots of GLITTER and FEATHERS and we dress ourselves and our young girls in it so we can prance about town, flaunting our stuff to the men. What are these costume bands promoting if not sex appeal? Why so we support the promotion of sex appeal and then get upset when our young girls act out?

Why do we have such double standards?

When we display such behaviors(and we are supposed to be the role models of society,) how then can we expect our girls to behave differently?

Women, I urge you to make a difference by the way you carry yourselves. Be a positive role model… Mothers protect your teenage girls, talk to them about the dangers out there… know where your children are at all times and who they’re with…Have a healthy relationship with your kids… Get your children involved in positive groups and extra curricular that stress on the great morals and values…

I saw the petetion and I will not be signing it unfortunately; makes no sense because what this will lead to eventually is having underage girls/boys and older girls/boys ‘doin their ting’ on the DL (they don’t want to get caught and face the law); leading to more unreported cases of STIs, and more unwanted pregnancies for girls under the age of 18. Raising the age of consent will do absolutely Nothing! What the youth needs is counseling about how to boost self esteem and feelings of self worth, knowledgeable adults coaching them on what is right/wrong about sex, and parents who aren’t afraid to tell them the ins and outs about sex and relationships, and not relying on other people (namely the children’s peers) to do it for them. As I understand, the girls in the video aren’t even 14 much less 16, so if the age of consent is 16 right now and they are still having underage sex, what makes you anything will change if the AOC is raised?

SO maybe they should drop it to 5? it should be raised and adult violators should be severely punished. and be added to a sex offender registry and have restrictions placed on their activities. I agree that society needs to improve the socialisation of the youth but it does 1not mean that it should not be raised. If your 16 year old daughter comes home pregnant for a 40 year old i dont think you would be so open to say that she consented so let it be. at 16 most young girls are not ready for the rigours of motherhood. the physical and emotional tool on the body may be too much for them. Alot of them will soon have 3 and 4 children with little support for these children. some may flourish after their child but imagine how much further they could have been without having a baby. and babies are not even the scariest

Raising the age of consent will do very little to solve this problem. The problem is our broken society and wide spread corruption in the police and the legal system. Many countries around the world age of consent is 16. When some were faced with similar problems they did not raise the age of consent, they introduced legislation and most importantly enforced that legislation. If those young girls had gone into the police station to report that they were being abused would the police take it seriously? No and that’s where our problems is. We hear about politicians and police themselves committing such acts against under age children. This case is only getting such attention because of world wide media publicity, but it is happening more often than we think. The only way to fix such problems is to introduce new laws and enforce the existing ones. Set up an independent commission to hold the law enforcement authorities responsible when they fail to do their job properly.

I don’t get it. How does changing the age of consent help? The more taboo an activity, the more exciting it seems to the younger ones among us. I believe that Ms. Cuffy-Weekes is being too superficial. Does she have data from other countries to prove that increasing the age reduced teenage pregnancies or statutory rape? What we need is enforcement of the existing laws. What we need is to empower women so they do not take the men’s money knowing that they are sleeping with their under aged kids. This knee-jerk reaction is crap.

Imagine if the camera was not there.. does that mean that they did not have sex? no! The fact is that it happened .. and if this was not recorded no one would give a rats bum bum..this is what is wrong with our society.. everything and everywhere ppl think it is okay to either video tape or take a picture.. and is not everything that is appropriate to share. Still does not change the fact that the act took place. Now this raising the age of consent that has become an issue since this video surfaced is not going to stop teens from having sex, what is the difference between an 18 year old brain today and a 17 yr and 364 days brain yesterday? not a whole lot.. Some of the same ppl who making all de hoopla are the same ppl Shaggy sang about in “church heathens”. turn a camera on in their bedrooms and the food will drop right out of our mouths. Raising the age of consent (which in my opinion) is only or should I say mostly beneficial to the girls if even at all. More of our young men are going to go to jail for what? having sex with their girl friends, fiance’ etc.? When I was younger the age of consent use to be 14 and it was raised to 16.. how much has that changed the fact that children are having sex? nil! but it does allow children to have criminal records, which is a deterrent when job hunting for employers.. s what will or young men do? steal? so now not only are they rapists but thieves as well. I know this age stands for young men as well.. but no sane young man is going to say a 18 year old girl raped him.

No law will totally eliminate any crime or sin.

However, good laws well written have the potential of decreasing the crkimes.` In this case it may lessen the number of children or young people violated, as well as give the police the tools they need to arrest the offenders and lay charges.

The fact that a law is never 100% effective in eliminating the problem cannot be used as an excuse to not have the law. If this was the case we would have to remove all he laws from the books including the law against murder.

“many girls act that way because they were abused by their father, uncles…”……

i already dressed that…if they are in a position where they are vulnerable and are being taken advantage off then charges should be filed?????..for example confiding in an older man that you have been abused then he turns around and seduces the young girl

but it have to be investigated and be determined that the young woman was very vulnerable and manipulated, she has commonsense and need to take responsibility for her actions at some point…. how many of us can use depression as reason for committing a crime and get away with it?…

if a woman is physically abused by her husband over a length of time and eventually kills her husband she is not simply let off for killing because she was abused….the circumstances under which the murder took place need to be examined and investigated…and she will be found guilty of murder if the situation did not require the use of force at the time

smh now you want to be a humanitarian plzzzz…I dont see how changing the age of consent going to help. The age of consent now is 16 and children under 16 still having sex so you think that going to stop them? Every parent need to talk to their children and let them understand it is better to wait. if you plant that in your child from young that child will grow with that in them….so i think is time for the parents to step up and claim their role not to raise the age of consent smh.

  19. January 9, 2013

Isn’t it bad enough that the age of consent at 16 as far as sexual activity is concerned? I think CONSENT have different meaning to different people, but even at the age of 18 many has the inability to decide. Some men say “women say “NO” but they really mean yes.” Men, NO means NO. Of course young boys and young girls will do whatever pleases their fancy. STOP blaming our parents for what we do wrong. I, personally, didn’t have the sexual experience that you did, but I had the yelling, beating. I was NEVER a pushover, I’m still not one. Sexual or otherwise, the minority/age of consent should be 18 years for certain things and 21 years depending on the situation. Boys and girls should not engage in sexual activity until they are able to differentiate right from wrong. We vote at 18, drink at 21, SEX should be in between.

So im a young girl, growing up in Dominica & im hearing all this nonsense about raising age of consent. Practically all this does is put more men in jail whether or not the girls consented to engage in sexual activity with them. & in Dominica men who have sex wid girls tend to spend more time in prison than dem drug dealers and dem murderers. I think that the adults had alot to say upon the pornographic material displayed by the two girls. I think its time that you listen to what the young people have to say because listening to Matt the other day this man had alot to say about how its not only those two girl and how its all the young people who are involved.. that isnt true.. yes some young ppl hv sex but dnt display it on networks. but if they did it and are proud of what dey done, who are yu to baby dem and blame the rest of young people as a result. You blame the economy, yu blame KKK, but refuse to blame those who engaged demselves in such activity?

#Raise the age of consent, but more boys/men in jail cux it seems our prison has alot of space.
#give us the young people a chance to speak becux apparently the adults who had negative things to say were never young!
#Do us a favor, jux raise us better & dis would be the least of ur worries

Do we really believe that raising the age of consent to 18 will bring about a drop in teenage sex and even porn? Do we have empirical data to prove that the explosion in porn and teenage sex is directly or substantially brought about by the age of consent? When the consent age was 18, loads of people were being brought to the Courts for having sex while not yet 18 years. The age was reduced, and the figure skyrocketed. Jailing offenders has not reduced the incidence of crimes. Hanging murderers has not reduced murders. Reducing the hours of carnival jump-up has not reduced fights, injuries, alcohol consumption and the like. I declare that raising the age of consent will do nothing to stop or reduce porn. Much more that that is required. Finally, do we need a petition to convince the Government that intervention is needed in teenage sex and porn? Doesn’t the Gov’t know that already?

i am certain that if a survey gets done among all those clamoring for the age of consent to be raised and for all those evil men who prey on these helpless innocent young girls are the same who oppose any type of sex education being part of the school curriculum and who also against things like abortion or access to contraceptives. somehow they believe that by burying their heads in the sand and punish some illusional boogey man that young ppl will somehow stop having sex. you cant legislate gullibility, a 15 year old who does not know that having unprotected sex with a grown man or woman is a bad idea won’t be protected by increasing the age of consent, however if you educate and train and reveal things to that 15 year old then it increases the likelihood of that person making the right decisions. And further, dont you think that it would be a good approach to hold parents who are complicit in the thing a little more accountable; i mean, you go to clubs and jams which are suppose to be for adults and you see skimpily dressed young teenagers doing as they please and consuming large amounts of alcohol, etc, ??????

While I applaud the efforts, to me raising the age of consent makes no sense if our judicial system cannot even prosecute and punish offenders for 14 year old. Here come a back log of older cases and the addition of new ones to pend for 10 years. We can move forward with this motion but it will only be effective if we can properly and efficiently handle these offenders.

It all begins at home…..if the Shepard can’t lead his sheep, don’t expect him to lead mine. Parents need to pay closer attention to their children and learn to get involve in their kids well being. Grown men preying on young girls has been in the Dominican society for as long as I can remember and all that happens is that people gossip about it but do nothing meaningful with the information they have. I, for one do not believe that changing the age of consent would really help anything unless we change our mind set. I see it like placing a zero to the left of 50 for example, would that change it’s value or the number? No.
It’s high time that our young boys and girls start valuing and respecting themselves. And likewise their seniors (older men and women) should respect themselves also.
Earlier on I said, change our mind set. Why? Because I can recall having a chat with a guy in his late 30s and he was saying to me if I don’t like taking revenge for my mother. Meaning that someone hurt my mother in order to make me so it was my duty to do likewise. Is it that sex is all about? Taking revenge? Then this can’t be love. And sad to say but there are a lot of individuals who think like that in our society today. But you see when people want to justify their dirty lifestyle they will say anything to justify their actions. The way I see it is in a healthy relationship their only room for appreciating and loving each other. Where did these guys get their education from? And when you look around they are the so called hot boys of our society. Isn’t that sad?
Mother and Fathers educate the little ones the master has placed in your hands. So that in the future they shall be men and women who can’t be bought or sold, but individuals who shall be able stand on their own. Start talking to them early, because if you don’t someone else will. And they might just give them the wrong information.
People raising a child or children is not only about meeting their physical needs. Some of us went to give them all they ask for, hence you have to neglect their education (that’s home as well as school) to give them the latest and best. Let us teach them to live within their means, but we must lead by example. That’s the only way they are going to have a high self worth and there by will not be willing to exchange their bodies for material possessions.
Let’s pray for our country that someday soon we shall individually as well as collectively heed the call of our Redeemer.

While I have no issues with raising the age of consent, I honestly believe doing so will just serve as another paper law. Just like so many others. At the current age of consent of 16 years the Law is hardly of any consequence. You find young girl being sexually active at ages 14, 15 and even lower. They are on occasions, rare as may be… delivering babies at the Public Hospital with hardly an inquiry.
It’s like the only people that face the consequence of the law, are men who often times find themselves caught in a “mother don’t like him” hit back…
Seriously we need to stop just attempting to have laws written almost for the it sake. I think for this law and many others like it, we need start to directing our focus and emphasis on enforcing the existing one and then moving on to enhance its effectiveness by amending them when necessary.

    Best of Luck Nevertheless

Personally, I have little children myself including a little girl, but I think that Dominican lawmakers do things on the spur of a momment without thinking.

The age of consent right now is 16, and for the number of mothers here that is under 16 with no father in jail, I say “what is the point?” You should be enforcing the laws already in place and trying to find ways to prosecute the parents who accept money from peodiphiles, and getting the underage mothers to say who the daddy is; or getting the names of the dads from the registry. DO SOMETHING, before you try to raise the age of consent. That is just talk.

Too many little children are being violated and nothing is being done about that. Work on that instead. As far as the girls who choose to have sex with cameras in the same room? Let them live with the consequenses. I tell young people if you bend down to pee, and see somebody on their phone, sit down in it. Trust no phone or camera, and you tell me you have sex on camera and everybody is upset with the guys? When it was the two adult makes police arrested them, and it was sent from 1 friend to another. Arrest the girls too, they maybe got paid.

My people of Dominica , we are too short sighted and wanted this to happen now!! This idea to raise the age of consent may not benefit the young girls of today, but will in the long run make our future men in Da , have respect for under 18 yr old girls.
It is us now who have to set the laws and norms for our kids to follow , just like the people beofre us did.

Ms. Cuffy I think you were ease dropping on my conversation. This was a topic I was a part of sometime ago and please people we have to do what it takes to make it happen or we will see the demise in the innocent children around Dominica. For one, if the age to get a drivers licence is 18, why should the age of conscent to do other things be 16. Tsis must be taken very very seriously. Years ago a mom could control and really deal with her kids these days the kids are talking about the rights of the child. The only right this child has is to live and exist, and respect the rules that are laid out for them tillll they are 18.
I have already spoken to my own kids, the legal age in my household is 18, no one, no government or welfare knows the struggles that I encounter daily to raise my kids so please no one get involved when they are being punished or corrected, Once I am not killing them is all that matters.
A good spanking no loger exist, the bible clearly says do not spear the rod and spoil the child. Now all kids want to be in big people business.

Looking to raise the age of consent does absolutely nothing and is no where close to being a solution to the problem at hand. It actually makes it worse. How about looking at more parental/ adult supervision and even after school activities and curricular to keep the youth occupied. ‘Idle hands are the devils play things’. I am surprised that we have not heard anything about the individuals who originally uploaded the videos all over the place. Current law states that these girls are under-age, hence this is child pornography. So not only are there traces of violence against women, but also against children.

50,000 signatures for a petition in a country of 65,000 inhabitants is grandiose. Indeed! Raising the age of consent will not make a difference because teenagers will still continue to have sex. If the aim is to prosecute the offenders, we all know that it still will not apply to “z’enfant So and So.” Instead of raising the age of consent, what is needed is a education and a review of child rearing practices.

Nothing cannot stop under age sex, when young girls getting their urges they will surly go out and satisfy their urges, and what i suspect is that young girls are becoming more tight lipped on the matter and is all because of our stupid parenting skills

When our teenage daughters have a boyfriend they keep it away from the parent because of how we speak to them, whats wrong in having a boyfriend?,
We just need to speak to them on controlling themselves in their relationship.

Cause i know of couples that fell in love in their teens and went on and married, become old then die a couple.

Its a move in the right direction, Mrs. Weekes but does it go far enough?

Is that a move to make us look better as a society in the eyes of the world? How is it really going to curb that dangerous fad that is taking place there right now? The problem is much deeper than the age of consent.

I read all the comments on the posting of the video yesterday and I must say we as a society have become so morally lacking, that our youths are now picking the fruits of our corrupted tree.

I saw so many people making excuses for these girls that I am astonished. Even little children know the difference between right and wrong and these young girls knew full well what they were doing.

First of all at that age they should be cherishing their virginity, instead they choose to have sex, and it wasn’t their first time either, but not only sex with a boyfriend you know, but they chose to have an orgy. Secondly they chose to engage in Lesbianism, the new fad/cult. People hardly called them out for that. Then they chose to have sex on camera, again the new fad. I say they are nasty little girls and deserve to walk society with their heads hanging in shame. They may not have the age to consent but they well know the difference between right and wrong. We have to hold our children responsible for their actions. How many of us would laugh and glee if that was our daughters?

As for them guys, they are rogues and vagabonds and I do hope that they are over the age so that they can be exposed and dealt with. Shame on them guys.

While I agree this is a move in the right direction, and you deserve to be applauded, the difference between 16 and 18 will not help the moral decay that we are now facing as a society.

Why is there even a need to have a petition to bring to the government for such a cause? What is the negative effect on society that prevents that law from being legislated already? Do you see that the problem lies deep within for real?

Good trees produce good fruits and corrupted trees produce corrupted fruits…parents hold your children close to your chests.

My parents were wonderful people, but that did not stop their so called friends from molesting me for years. I was just a baby when it started and I was too scared to tell. Some would visit and pretend they were too drunk to go home. Those who take advantage of young children should be made to pay, BIG TIME

The authorities should not wait on a petition to set the law straight. This could be my daughter,or your daughter. How would you feel if it was your daughter? Its more than time that those adult men let the children grow up.

The worse part is when the parents accept money from the child molesters to prevent them from going to jail. My parents never knew what was happeing to me. But I know they would kill someone for their beautiful daughter.

You know even church leaders do it. Its time for examples to be set. But again, because is mr this or mr that son, the law is not for them.

Raising the age of consent may not prevent young people from having sex but it should deter the grown men, including those who are put in place to protect our children to stay away from our children. Policemen, Teachers, Politicians etc. Yes, some may say that the girls are old enough to know what’s right or wrong but if these are grown men approaching them and enticing them with material things then there is an imbalance of power. If the Prime Minister (my former schoolmate)has to go back to his HS days he will recall that imbalance of power I’m referring to especially when it comes to the teachers and Policemen having sexual relationships with the young girls. Nobody said anything but those who can do something must do something to protect our children, girls as well as boys. I am calling on all parents to talk to your children about these behaviors. This is so disturbing to me. We hear so much of this here in the US and just to think it’s happening back home is just so sad :(

This is a reiteration of previous calls to raise the legal age. However we as humans sometimes need a good push into action and I guess this is it. I am a father with two 15 year old girls and I have been trying my best with them giving them all the love in the world that I can but they still will be faced with decisions in life which I cannot control. So I for one will be happy if the legal age is put to 18.

Why do we consider our children adults at 18 to vote and drive but want to allow them to spread their legs at 16! Boy you must be mad.

As a man I do not condone this after 12 is lunch attitude that our men and especially our law makers have. Time to change that age to 18! Plain and simple.

    January 8, 2013

I applaud Miss Weekes for taking this initiative, however, it may not have any effect because we do not apply the laws for the benefit of our citizens. We are too lenient when it comes to upholding the laws of the land. We do not have a standard; therefore, it is difficult to hold people accountable. This would definitely prevent men from exploiting those young women if it would be vehemently carried out by the justice system. However, am afraid that it will not work in Dominica because we not have no standard and we always strive for mediocrity. Someone made a very good point by asserting that it will be a problem to implement this initiative because quite a lot of those who are suppose to lead by example do not do so. Why is the Prime Minister of a country not married?

I appreciate Mrs. Cuffy-Weekes’ enthusiasm but really, i hope no one pays attention to this petition.

The idea is just another orgasmic response to what is a larger problem than mere sex. If the dear lady is so concerned about resolving the problem of under-aged persons having sex, she could first study the sources of the problem then, use the data to inform her recommendations. My suspicion is that she will find that the solutions to what she perceives to be the real problem will be found elsewhere, not in an age of consent.

Raising the age of consent is just a band-aid on a festering wound, a.k.a bobo; it only makes the wound worse.

It would seem that Ms. Cuffy-Weekes is suggesting that is is because the age of consent is 16 why this incident took place. I am not sure why she drew such a conclusion and definitely i cannot find credibility in that conclusion. The factors that influence this type of behaviour are many and no one act such as a petition to raise the age of consent is going to correct it. Whether the age was 18 or 21 or some other arbitrary number, the fact is the girls involved were below the current age of consent,16, and broke it anyway. I am not sure either why we blame men for what girls do. 15 year-old girls are able to sit and reason and pass 10 subjects at CXC and you are trying to tell me they cannot reason to know what is appropriate behaviour and what is not?

Glad to see something is finally being done. I was disgustin by what I saw on my visit to Dominica last year, the little kids that I saw at the clubs and late night events, the men they were with looked 5times their age and it just looks disgusting. One of my questions was so their parents reeeeeally allowed them to get out their homes the way they were dressed, and if they were aware of their relationships. I hope they raise the age of consent. These men will prey on our children knowing that its wrong.

That’s a good cause Mrs. Weekes. However the changes in our behavior will come when people go back to basics and change their attitude toward sex and teach their children the same. I know that there are many who will disagree with me but this is how I see it. Sex is something created for a man and a woman in a God ordained monogamous relationship. When we instill such values in our children and in society we wont need to put our hands on our head and “bawl”.

A bit of paper with a law written on it is not going to stop under 18s having sex!

Also – how will it be enforced? Police peeping in your bedroom window and ask you for id if they see you getting jiggy!?!?!

Wake up people. If you don’t want your daughter to have sex until she is 18, then educate her on the potential consequences of sex (i.e. pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease), teach her that her body is not an object and nurture her to have respect for herself! Do the same with your son!

I understand what you saying but I don’t fully agree with you on that one. While it may be true that there are consequences for our sins and we have to deal with the repercussions of our actions, that isn’t a justifiable reason to lower the age of consent. I completely support Delia in wanting to raise it.

It’s a sad reality that our young ladies no longer know the value of being a decent woman who is full of virtue and morals, and that our young men would rather be thugs, and gansters instead of decent men who walk upright and make meaningful contributions to society. Yet, even worse is that we have allowed our society to become this way, whether or not we agree. We let too many things just “slide” and one too many things “go with the flow”. If we don’t do something now, we may never get another chance to change things.

    • Dominiquen
      January 8, 2013

I agree with Tiny, we will only be putting more men in jail. Parents need to educate and control their children. The age of consent in the UK is 14years. We can’t keep blaming men, women must share the blame because many of them are aggressive and approach men even married men.

Raising the age of consent might a little! but reviewing, tightening and enforcing the laws of this country will have a bigger impact! I will sign but I don’t think that will change the price of rice. The young girls are not listening to their parents and they are more agressive than the young men of today. I can’t blame the parents because I know some parents who do their jobs and the kids still say “you make your mistake let me make mine”. The young girls of Dominica need a massive dose of high self esteem. They lay on their back for top-up.

The age of consent should be raised and those found wanting should face the harshest of punishments. Raise the age along with the penalities. People keep yapping about this won’t change a thing, but if we can save one young boy or girl then it is well worth it. What about the babies, toddlers, disabled who can’t give consent yet become victims of sick lowlives? All who want to mess with underage kids will find excuses. Maybe it will not deter the 16 year olds and 14 year olds that are having babies, or being ruined by adults but it will surely embarass and lock their backsides up. I support this 1 billion percent. This is not just about teen pregnancy, what about the rape of young boys? A child is a child period end of discussion. It’s embarassing to hear big hard back men calling the radio talking about those young girls this and that, get some damn self control. Those grannies who like to abuse young boys too in Dominica and bribe them this is for you too.

We have to figure out what we want. I think the age of consent was 18 years before and it was changed to 16 years. Think of this people.

  114. Maybe?
    January 8, 2013

I’m sorry, but I honestly don’t concur that increasing the age of consent to 18 years will mitigate the prevailing issues. We need to understand that it is a modern age where children are maturing exponentially and are exposed to the media. We can’t simply pass a law and hope that our young girls don’t have sex below the age of consent. If a parent has done an excellent job raising a daughter, but that daughter chooses to have sex despite her decent upbringing, why should the boy be apprehended because the girl is “under-age”? Furthermore, I believe that passing such a law will only introduce young men to Stockfarm. After all, there are many boys and girls between 16 and 18 in college. So evidently quite a bit of college boys above 18 could face jail time for having sex with “under-age” girls. And then, what will become of our society?

This is illogical and foolish. The women on these videos are under the age of 16, how would raising the age of consent from 16 to 18 reduce these ills?

Also, 50,000 signatures? Did this happen in Dominica? Not one time did I hear about this going around except on D.N.O. How many people who are in Dominica can attest to signing this document?

There are over 60,000 people living here, you mean only 15,000 people didn’t sign this? This so called 50,000 is very inclusive in my view.

I believe the way to address this problem is a re-education on sexism and sexual attitudes towards men and women, a review of our legal system on the subject and it’s applications. If there is respect and consciousness between men and women in society these ills will be curbed without reducing or increasing the age of consent.

At the moment, it’s as toothless as our legal drinking age. I don’t even know what it is supposed to be, that’s because during my youth I was never asked for ID when purchasing alcohol.

Raising the age of consent will not decrease the incidence of under age sex! It will just criminalise something that is going to happen anyway!

Its not that i support underage sex especially given the circumstances under which the latest incident was brought to light.

This problem can only be dealt with through education which must start with our parents shedding their cloak of hypocrisy and taking up the mantle of mentor and educator within the home.

It will also help if the resources that were diverted to fund the notorious “Gay Zsar” that the Ministry of Education recently established
were directed towards increased awareness and education in our schools.

Also concerted efforts at job creation for our youth will lead to a decrease in temptation to seek illicit means of making money by young and old … the increasing positive morale among the populace will iin turn lead to a decrease in these social blights of pornography , drug pedalling etc etc etc

    • Peeping Tom

Mrs. Cuffy Weekes, while I understand your cry, I do not think that this is important at this moment. At this time the problem has gone past older men taking advantage of innocent girls and boys. The girls and boys of Dominica are not so innocent anymore. The problems lie at home. Parents are not educated enough to keep up with what the kids get from the social media. The drive we need is to educate the parents, so they can be better prepared.
