Alwin Bully receives UWI doctorate

Bully following the award of his honorarary doctorate by UWI

Dominican playwright, theatre director, actor, artist, carnival organizer and cultural activist, Alwin Bully has been honoured by his Alma Mater, the University of the West Indies, for his contribution to Caribbean society.

Over the weekend, the Chancellor of UWI, Sir George Alleyne, conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa. This took place at the graduation ceremony of the Open Campus of UWI, held at St. John’s, Antigua on Saturday. Also receiving a similar honour was Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of St. Lucia.

Public Orator of the Open Campus, Dr. Francis Severin, in outlining Dr. Bully’s contributions before the two thousand persons gathered at the ceremony, described him as one of Dominica’s and the region’s finest cultural icons.

Another prominent Dominican receiving a degree that day was calypsonian, Gregory Brian Riviere, better known by his stage name ‘Caresser’, who received his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences. Riviere was among 27 Dominican graduants from the Open Campus. Also attending the ceremony in both an academic and state capacity was the President of Dominica, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, former law professor at UWI.

Honorary doctorates Dr. Dame Pearlette Louisy and Dr. Alwin Bully (in red gowns) pose with Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, Dame Louise Lake-Tack, and senior UWI members after the ceremony

Congratulations dear friend, I think that you are truly deserving of this award.

May your Dominican Flag be unfurled high from the tallest stipple and in every Dominican’s home, acknowledging, just one of your many achievements.
May our Dear Lord keep you in his loving care always.

Alwin is closer to the Caribbean history he helped put in perspective while at UNESCO. Does anybody know that Alwin Bully’s play, The Ruler, instigated Maurice Bishop to overrule the ruler in Grenada and became one himself?
I carried Alwins play and handed it over to Bishop in January 1978. I wonder what else he has for us to initiate changes in this great part of the world.

Another Dominican who graduated on that day was Miss Dana Delsol of La Redoute, Loubiere – I know her as “Marla Gibbs” from our days of watching the “Jeffersons”. Congrats Dana. You must be justifiably proud of your achievements. Go for the next one. From all of us from that area of Loubiere (Lauwoodoute)

I am only hoping that UWI requires these prominent people to write a “THESIS” in their field of work before conferring the Doctorate. Congrats, Dr. Bully.

      October 17, 2011

Unless the thesis is designed as an educational tool for the benefit of those that follow, I see no reason for it. The man’s work over the years speaks louder than any thesis he could ever write. He does not need to justify his most recent accomlishment.

      • DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,
        October 17, 2011

It is intended for three reasons:

        1. as an educational tool for the benefit of those to follow

        2. to be documented in the archives of UWI

        3. to fulfill a university requisite before conferring the doctorate

    • my take
      October 17, 2011

To DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE: Did you read the article? If you did, then obviously you did not comprehend what was therein. An honorary degree was conferred on Alwin, what thesis do you want him to write?

When the Mighty Sparrow (the Birdie) got an honorary degree from UWI, do you think that he too ought to have written a thesis?

Why is it that we like to belittle our own instead of praising them? Why????

Well deserved Alwin, congratulations are in order to you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to culture through the years, both at home and with UNESCO.

      • DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,
        October 17, 2011

I was not belittling anybody, Sir. I just think that writing a Thesis should be a requirement before conferring a Doctorate on anybody irrespective of whether his or her works speak volumes. Sparrow should have been asked to write a thesis as well before conferring a Doctorate on him.

      • G.I Joe
        October 17, 2011

You are correct. This is a requirement for an academic degree. I don’t know of any university that requires a thesis for an honourary degree. That would completely defeat the purpose. These degrees are granted in recognition of excellence over an extended period of time.

      October 17, 2011

For your information, De Caribbean Change, the degree is a honorary degree. It is not given in fulfillment of the submission of a thesis.

What wonderful news! Dr. Bully is unquestionably one of the most comitted patriots we have, a man who is patriotic in all the right (as opposed to the overzealous) ways, a man whose work we should all be glad for and proud of.

What do you mean!We have people who are just as good or even better what of Raymond Lawrence and others who have stayed here to see the art form remain and continue to move up tothe next level

      • G.I Joe
        October 17, 2011

How does Alwayn Bully being “ONE of the most committed” take away from Raymond Lawrence’s contributions?

If allu comprehension skill are lacking, keep allu mouths shut lest you make a fool of yourselves. Gosh darn!!
