As part of Early Childhood Awareness Month, students and staff of the Bright Beginning Centre (BBC) in Roseau hosted a “Father’s Focus Day” where special treats were organized for all fathers who have students attending the school.

The event was held on Wednesday.

Fathers also had to take a funny photo with their son or daughter to be exhibited at the school since the day corresponded with International Men’s Day (IMD).

Teacher at the school, Shereen Laronde, told Dominica News Online (DNO) that the fathers of BBC have contributed in a huge way to the institution over the years and they felt that something should be done to show appreciation.

“We wanted to do something for them. They came in and were very surprised and happy about the treat,” Laronde said. “We are very thankful for the men and fathers of the school. They did a lot for us so we wanted to do something in return to give back to them.”

According to her, every year during IMD, something special is done for the fathers to show appreciation.

She stated further that, father’s had the opportunity to dip for a prize and were fed with cake by their sons and daughters.

IMD was celebrated this year under the theme; “Working Together for Men and Boys” in over 60 countries around the world.

Its objectives include; a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.

    A beautiful picture!

An event like this requires a number of caring adults agreeing to give their time and effect to organize it, plus fathers with enough interest in the wellbeing of their children to participate.

The absence of fathers either in the homes or in the lives of boys and girls growing up has been blamed for many of the behavioral problems we are seeing today. Observation suggests this is often the case.

When I was in elementary school in Canada the “Parent and Teacher’s Association” hosted a “Parent and Teacher’s Night” midway through the school term in an effort to meet with parents at the school. The best of each child’s work was put on display, and the teacher would talk with the parents. Then when our son was in school they had this practice.
My wife and I were happy to attend.

However, I recall a time during my own school days when they were having a problem getting the fathers to attend. The dads would roll the responsibility off on the moms. I am sure some had legitimate reasons for being absent such as being over tired from a stressful working day, or working the evening shift, etc. But it was interpreted as a lack of interest on the part of some of our teachers at a time when they could have done with a little encouragement.

For the sake of the children it is so important for the dads to be involved in the lives of their children, especially in their educations. The time the kids are at home with us passes so soon. and then they are gone with whatever memories they take with them.

It was heartening to read this news article and see the picture! It says much about the nature island and its good people!

    Blessings upon all involved! :-D
