Call for participation in youth land acquisition survey

Caribbean Youth Think Tank (CYTT) Representative for Dominica, Delroy Williams, is making a plea to Dominican youth to participate in a survey which aims at airing out their concerns  regarding land accessibility and acquisition.

According to Williams, the purpose of the survey is to inform policy makers about the issues relating to land access, land acquisition and various policy issues that have to do with registration of land, among others.

The survey is being done by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in collaboration with the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) Young Surveyors Network.

“This survey is important because access to land and land acquisition by young persons is proving to be a challenge” Williams noted. “This opens up a lot of opportunities not only in terms of business opportunities but also education, environmental management, waste management and all these things.”

He said that he hopes to capture the youth perspectives on land matters and inform policy makers about those issues since there is a land policy initiative occurring in the OECS.

The survey is being done online and aims to gather feedback from young people in relation to the challenges that they face when accessing and acquiring land.

The results of the survey will be presented at an upcoming land policy meeting carded for August 5th to 9th, 2013 and according to Williams, it is his hope that legislation will be reviewed to make access easier.

The workshop will be hosted by the OECS Secretariat and the UN-Habitat Global Land Tools Network.

The CYTT is partnering with the UN-Habitat and the FIG to conduct this survey as part of its Youth-IN Project. The Youth-IN project is a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) initiative to promote and encourage youth involvement, inclusion, interest etc as agents of change in the sustainable development of the Caribbean region.

    Dear Readers:
Please do not dismiss ananymous’ comment above as just another comment! What this young man mentioned here is so true and a matter which must be addressed and corrected! Why can’t a hard-working Dominican own a piece of land? Why must our most precious commodity be sold to foreigners who have no loyalty to this Island or its people? We are creating an environment of future colonization and foreign occupation. This not good AT ALL!!!

I share your sentiments…great observation! Anonymous, land prices will increase at a much faster rate given the new economic citizenship presenter by the PM last Wednesday.

As young professional I hope some good come out of this survey. i have been trying to acquire property for some time now. but with the high cost of property and the high interest rate charged by the bank I will never own a piece of my country.i have been to this real estate website and the asking prices are just not for local people. The prices are quoted in USD.There seems to be a lack control over the real estate business in DOMINICA. They just make up the prices as they go.Only foreigner can afford to buy land here.and these unpatriotic greedy Dominican land owners selling our birth rite 1 square feet at a time.
