Campbell Primary School gets helping hand

Representative of the Chinese Business Community Mary Wang addressing the ceremony

The Campbell Primary School has received a donation of $27,000 from the Chinese community.

The donation was made at a ceremony on Wednesday by eight Chinese business people in Dominica and will go towards the implementation of an Early Childhood Education Program at the school.

Representative of the Chinese Business Community, Mary Wang, said that donation was made as a sign of gratitude to the Dominican public for its support. “Even though most of the Chinese businesses in Dominica are still small we have been trying our best to help Dominica people to improve their livelihood. Education, especially early childhood education, plays a critical role for both a person and a country,” she said.

Education Minister Petter Saint Jean said the donation was a sign of Chinese Business Community’s commitment to Dominica. “We are indeed thankful for the generous contribution that you have made towards the education of young people in Dominica. It is indeed a demonstration of your commitment to what I consider a fruitful relationship to the Commonwealth of Dominica in a most tangible way and for this we are eternally grateful,” he stated.

Lillian Brade, a teacher, said thanks on behalf of the school.

“It is this and other much needed assistance which is most welcomed and appreciated in this school community as we work arduously to ensure that the call for every child must learn become a reality here at our school,” Braid said.

The Ministry of Education has already engaged a contractor to refurbish a room to facilitate the early childhood education program at the school.

I would like to ask all dominicans how many people from dominica are doing businesses in china? This is a hush up donation to keep people from seeing the light. This is my opinion. Time will tell. When mamo was in
Power all u use to see her getting assistance overseas , not bringing people here in our country. I luv da so much but these things get me real upset. Domninica is a free port for all countries, but when da people travelling they have them in little room , asking them all kind of questions. If u lucky u will pass or u will be right back on plane back to da. I have to say u all are hurting the country . Stop blaming the pm when all u in corplo with everything.

That could be the Inland Revenue tax they keep back when they don’t give receipts to customers. Can’t have too much in the bank to arouse suspicion. My two cents. LOL

Thanks for the Donation. We can always do with more. To whom much is given much is expected. We need at least $20000.00 for the Grand Fond school. Thanks in advance.

    **PUBLIC RELATION IN ACTION**

This might also be a good “public relations” issue/gesture. After all, the chinese businesses in DA has been getting much negative press for quite some time now.

I think this donation is to gain good press for the Chinese business in DA. It could also be money coming from the Chinese government/embassy to the local chinese businesses which has now been donated to the school.

I am not saying this is exacly what happened but it is quite possible!!

We must all have an open mind.

    But, thanks for the donation!!

The vat that they are not paying to the Government of Dominica for their businesses, so they have no choice but to give back to school.

The other local businesses have to pay their post charges and their vat every month.

Just be thankful for small mercies. Why don’t you try to give back to your country the same way the Chinese did. Blessed is the hand that giveth than the mouth that slanders.

Yes group donations are quite effective. Our local businesses do give to their communities very often. Normally they give individually, because there are ongoing requests from multiple local communities, groups, individuals etc.. those requests never ends, believe me.

The Chinese strategy is to choose a project and combine their donations. Works better for them as a group. They started doing that over a year ago.

There must be at least 40-50 Chinese businesses on island. Do the math. This donation cost each of them between $500-$700, but the overall total is impressive and can implement a worthwhile project. They do that perhaps once or twice a year, and they can still claim tax allce on donations. Smart.

Wow you just painting all local businesses with a broad brush? So local businesses do not donate to schools? They just do not make a spectacle every time they give donations to the schools.
