Dominica’s leading telecommunications provider LIME is making a contribution of five hundred US dollars (US$500.00) and one year’s free internet to the winner of the 2011 5th annual CANTO World Telecoms Day Essay competition.
Seventeen year old Jeanne L Royer of Morne Daniel nabbed the first spot in the competition winning herself a trip for two plus hotel accommodation to CANTO’s 27th Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition in Suriname from July 10 – 13, 2011. Her other prizes include a Netbook computer, US$1000 and one year free Broadband internet service.
The World Telecoms and Information Society Day (WTISD) spearheaded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is observed on the 17th of May annually. To commemorate the occasion this year, the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) based in T&T held the 5th annual essay competition dubbed ‘CANTO’s 5th Annual World Telecommunication Information and Society Day Essay Competition under the ITU theme “Better life in rural communities with ICT’s”. Students from 15 – 17 years were invited to write a 600 word essay on the impact of ICTs in rural communities in their respective countries.
As a member of CANTO, LIME is privileged to be able to provide support to the winner with the cash contribution and free broadband service. LIME’s General Manager Jeffrey Baptiste said that Dominica should be proud of Jeanne Royer who beat out many of her peers from across the region to emerge as the first place winner. He added that LIME is happy to support CANTO in honoring some of the prizes to Ms. Royer.
Although reluctant to submit an essay to the competition, an extra nudge and encouragement from her mother propelled Ms. Royer to take on the challenge which eventually paid off in the end.
Ms. Royer is very grateful to LIME for the support being provided to her and she is looking forward to her Suriname trip next week.
Congratulations miss.
