“Champions are not made in gyms.Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire,a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill”- Muhammad Ali.

At the Castle Bruce Secondary, the will has been powerful, or like many Star Wars fans: “the force is with them”. Truly, the 2015-2016 school year has been “the year” of the Castle Bruce Secondary Sports Department.

It all began with the Under 15 football in November2015. Coached by Stanton Seraphin, the team was able to defeat all the other secondary schools on the island to emerge champions of the Secondary Schools Under 15 Championship. How thrilled the CBSS boys were to take home that trophy.

A few months later, in March 2016,Delroy Watt and the girl’s volleyball team trounced the Isaiah Thomas Secondary to capture the league trophy. This was another ride home filled with cheers and shouts of victory.

That winning spirit would persist, when on April 29, the Castle Bruce Secondary exerted a real champion effort and came out victorious in both boys and girls category of the Secondary Schools Beach VolleyballCompetition at Mero Beach. These games featured some of their top volleyballers in the names of Neilbert Thomas, Aren Burton, Romeo Burton, Deion Williams, Keon Burton, Tamisha Roberts, Adicia Burton, Rianne Prevost and Jennifer Gasper.

They did not tire out. In April, the Under 15 Cricket Team won the First Domestic Under 15 Championship, beating eight (8) schools to capture that title. The winning streak continued on May 2. In a commanding spell at the Botanic Gardens, the Under 15 cricket team, led by Stanton Seraphin, copped the title of Under 15 Secondary School Champs. The CBSS, against the Goodwill Secondary, put up a first innings total of 167. Sent in to bat, the GSS could only muster 32 runs. The CBSS attack was obviously in excellent shape. The coach then decided that he would send the GSS boys to bat again, but they could not garner the 135 run total. Young bowlers Abijah Benjamin, Romeo Burton and Deion Williams destroyed the GSS batting line-up. The batsmen didn’t fail either, the untouchableKyle Prevost scored 47 not out and Vaughn Elizee 45runs respectively.

Believe it, there is no end to the praise and commendation that they get at the general assemblies that take place each week. Members of the community stand alongside the gate and fence to see for themselves as the entire school shouts and screams ‘Deng Deng!’ These aspiring sports men and women know that when they play, they play for the people they represent from La Plaine to Antrizzle to Petite Soufriere and they spare no effort in giving 100% representation!

The Castle Bruce Secondary has had a hand in the sporting careers of some well-known sporting personalities including: Joslyn Prince, Sidney Lockhart, Raleighson Pascal, Gian Benjamin, Kershaski Jno Lewis, Chad Phillip, Brian Mason, Britney Stoute…just to name a few.

Currently, there are several students training for selection on various national secondary school teams. Though they have had to make do with the little that is made available to them, they have the vision and the desire, and have achieved A LOT! Castle Bruce Secondary: ‘dem are real champions’!
