Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) local registrar, Chandler Hyacinth, has revealed that come 2017, there will be some changes in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations.

She made that announcement while presenting the results of the 2016 CXC CSEC Examinations last week.

“For our next exam sitting in January, the multiple choice portion of the exam papers will be offered electronically,” she explained. “Registration begins towards the middle of September, so this is not usually an exam that students do, it is usually done by the private sector.”

She said CXC will begin electronic testing in May 2017 for the multiple choice section of the exams as countries have to be ready before they introduce electronic exams at the schools or centres.

“Once the Ministry of Education is satisfied that we can proceed, we will proceed,” she said.

She also indicated that some syllabus areas have been introduced and others revised. “In particular, I need to mention Mathematics…an SBA component has been introduced and come 2018 exams, students have to produce an SBA for Mathematics.”

She said an SBA component for English Language will also be introduced, “and come 2017 exams, we will see that becoming a significant part of the exam.”

According to Hyacinth, with the introduction of SBA’s, the Ministry of Education expects to see a vast improvement in students’ performance. “Because now you will be able to enter the exam room with grades already…,” she stated.

“Because now you will be able to enter the exam room with grades already…,” that’s the stupidest reason to have an SBA. CXC are lazy and incompetent, and are only looking to make money, instead of maintaining their social responsibility.

I believe grade 4should be passes as well because everyone can’get a 1. This is unfair because having to reset CxC over and over is a challenge and money is difficult to get due to the fact of work and other situations. Also when school leavers finish school their don’t have the qualifications to get work and so on. Please bring back4’s as passes

Every child is computer literate. with so many smart phones out there. not much difference between a smart phone and a computer. so that shou;d be the least of our worries. so instead of buying your child a smart phone but them a computer.

Well, it is interesting to know that most of the tablets the children received are destroyed and not all schools have proper internet system. I would like to see how these exams ae going to work !

The exams keep getting easier every year..Many schools have computer labs with poor, poor ,poor, extremely poor WIFI services…For children that can only type with their index finger,a total computer/electronic exam is BAD!!!!!
The students should be given an OPTION,as to how they would like to write their exam,,,,ELECTRONIC or by HAND!!CXC is trying to save cost, maximise profit, but I should have a say as to what I get for my money!!!
GIVE THE CHILDREN A doggone OPTION!!!!Writing an exam with pen, should ALWAYS BE PART OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM…I like hard copies of everything!!!!

I agree with your statement. The school system should always give handwritten exams to the students. However, this change has allowed many students to get grade ones and two in their CSEC exams. If I was a parent, I would ensure that my children are computer literate and at the same time, preparing them to use these devices to work. I understand your view on this matter, as a matter of fact I prefer handwritten exams, but now, every student have access to the internet, tablets, and computers. We should see this as a opportunity to train our children to use these devices to do homework, assignments, tests, quizzes, and of course exams. It is then students can get thirteen ones, or seventeen ones.
