NYCD: Newtown youth move to empower their community

Members of the Charlotte Empowerment Committee put their shoulders to the debris, for a cleaner Newtown

“Be the change you want to see” says the popular adage.  A great motto indeed, for if we’re not willing to work towards the ideal we wish to see in our surroundings, then who will?  A dynamic group of young people from Newtown got together with a common goal in mind: working towards uplifting the community; hence the emergence of the “Charlotteville Empowerment Committee”, a recently formed, community-based organization geared towards overall development of the people of Newtown and neighboring communities.

One of the main activities on the Committee’s work agenda is the long overdue celebration of “Fete Charlotteville”; a celebration of cultural heritage in Newtown and environs, which showcases the talent and contributions of community residents in fields such as sports, academia, skilled work and community service, whilst highlighting significant economic prospects namely in the areas of fisheries, tourism and entrepreneurship.

Although there has been a negative stigma attached to the village, a lot of positivity has come from the area, including outstanding performances in various fields and involvement in nation building.  The group’s first major undertaking has been a “Bayside Clean-up” which has been taking place over the past three Sundays, and is a continuous effort at upkeep of the village. The Charlotteville Empowerment Committee intends to highlight the many attributes of the bay side, such as boosting of aquatic sports, development as a tourism site and use as a venue for entertainment.

The Charlotteville Empowerment Committee solicits the support of the public, in our quest to build up young people of Newtown, and society by extension.

A big “thumbs up” to these young people. It is all too easy to give up. They did not take that option but decided to help themselves and the community. Support this all thew way. Imagine if all of Dominica followed this example what a country we could be!! Great stuff!

I am happy to hear of the positive undertaking by the youth of Dominica. most times the positive things are not being highlighted. Way to go young people don’t sit by and and what for government to do it for you. Dominica is yours to love and cherish. DNO Let me know how i can send down a supply of rubber gloves for the youth to use to protect their hands.

great job good example that needs to be emulated in all areas across Dominica. The only thing I hope as I did more will join in this endeavor to clean our back yard rather than ask others to do it for us. What`s missing is a couple Baco to assist with the heavy metal and debris. I visited Coney Island yesterday and noticed with amazement where the beach was washed away by super storm sandy what was being done was transporting of sand to replaced what was washed up by the storm and workers with graders continually leveling and fine tuning the “Beach” It dawned on me why are we not doing the same in Dominica with our Real beaches all over the Island? Talk about a real simple yet profound way of creating employment for our youths and equipment operators and the bigger picture is we can boast of our Real beaches and convinced the tourist to visit our Island. MASSIVE!! is that rocket science?Smfh.”

Well done youths of New Town, set an example for the rest of Dominica. Please remain united in your efforts at community development and togetherness. Hebrews 6:10 says, For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of love. God bLESS

And with that attitude our yards may never get cleaned. Regardless of the political party in power, and even though it’s cleaned more often, the people of the community still need to play their part in ensuring its UPKEEP. This group is in NO way politically affiliated, please don’t bring it here. Blessings!

These are the good stories about the youths I like to hear. Go for it folks! But on another hand come this Sunday the youths will be making history in the village of St. Joseph, where they will be involved in the FIRST political rally ever held in Dominica and most of them will be addressing a very, very, very large crowd of young Dominicans as well as those that are not as young. That is a very positive event put together by them and yet, up to this day, I have seen nothing from DNO about it. I wonder why? I really under why DNO?

      May 24, 2014

We hope so too; however it’s not a “that community” thing, littering is an island wide, no, world wide issue.. That’s where ‘community policing’ comes in, but thanks for your good wishes.

You of all people should know this is a group sponsored by Ambrose George. They SAY it’s not political however, all events are paid by Ambrose and they say its not political. I WILL NEVER join this group.

        May 26, 2014

As a NON-political group, we will accept donations from all willing sources. We have received positive feedback from both parties. Whoever does not want to join the group because of where we receive funding is more than welcomed not to. We’re looking at the participation of people who are looking towards development of the COMMUNITY, and not stoop so low as to make petty politics an issue. Blessings!

I wish to commend this group and pray that their togetherness remains. What a better country we would be if other communities would catch up on this positive vibes. Let’s all be the change we want to see..
