Chinese educational help evenly spread – PM

PM Skerrit

Educational help for Dominican students from the Chinese government has been evenly spread around the country, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

He told a prize giving ceremony of winners of the essay competition “China in my Eyes” on Thursday night that almost every village in Dominica has or has had one student studying in China.

“In looking at the students who have been to China, and those who are presently students there, and those who will be going there in September, we recognize that almost every if not every village in Dominica has had the opportunity to have at least one student studying in China,” the prime minister said.

And in defending Dominica’s eight years of diplomatic relations with Beijing, Prime Minister Skerrit suggested that with China being the 2nd largest economy in the world, “those of us who fail to recognize that China exists are not dealing with the realities of the world”.

Chinese Ambassador Wang Zonglai told the ceremony that he believed the essay competition was helping foster a positive image of China.

“I’m glad to find among the winners of the prizes a variety of careers, including student, teacher, clerk, police officer and meteorologist,” he observed.

“That  suffices to convince us of a broad foundation in people’s will existing to support the tree of friendship between China and Dominica,” the ambassador said.

Education Minister Peter St Jean told the ceremony that the standard of writing displayed by participants was of a very high quality, and that the writing spoke to the existing “strong relations” between the people of Dominica and China.

Prime Minister Skerrit told the ceremony jokingly that he’d wanted to take part in the essay competition but feared he would have won and ended up disenfranchising some of the other participants.

He told the audience, still laughingly, that he’d ensure his name was on the list for the next competition, expected to be an annual affair.

The winners of the competition are featured elsewhere on this site.

Mr PM, Educational help from the Chinese may have beem evenly spread through out the country as far as villages are concerned but where party politics is concerned, only one set benefits and that is, THE RED ONES. So as everything else under your administration, it is not evenly spread.

Studying in China, America, Russia, Dominica or even timbok 2, never 100% guarantee that you will get a job or even a job related to what you studied…I’m just saying that in this day and age being a recepient of any degree whatsoever, or from whatever country is just part of the process in finding a job. I am a student in China, and I am surely not looking to earn my degree and expect someone to employ me, esp. in DA…if i get a employed I will more than grateful, but at the end of the day one has to use what he/she has to make a way forward…

yes but when you have people who work had to study being left behind becasue someone else who is not qualified gets the job because of who he know or his surmane..do you think that is right???

It is time for returning students to have a mind set on creating jobs.JOB CREATION should be their goal. They should think of forming groups or companies or self employment situations

At least they have the education that can open doors to them as opposed to bein gun employed an not educated. In any field – sometimes it takes longer tofind jobs …some people are lucky and get jobs as soon as their course is done, others – may takes months to years. Worse yet, this is Dominica.

I still say it’s better to have an eductaion than not to have one… they both can start their own businesses if they have the means to do so.

On the other hand, i saw that you are frustrated with the fact that less qualified peopleget the jobs – then the issue is not always the government. It’s with the employer…and if the employer is the government, worse yet.

its up to the qualified candidates to voice this injustices and take action.

At the same time – not becuase you maybe more qualified than the other person guarantees you the job. There are many other factors … I have been part of many a interviewing committee where the most educated doesnt always get the job. Experience, personality and how you sell yourself also matters

They have become marketable. They are not qualified only for Dominica. They can move beyond the shores of Dominica. Think big.

I hope these scholarships are geared towards Dominica needs ie Agro processing, technicians, agriculture and all that is required for Dominica to diversify its economy and move the country towards the twenty ywenty vision, the practice of training for training sake must stop.
