Claudius Sanford gets U.S. scholarship

Sanford

Claudius Sanford is among six Eastern Caribbean citizens that have been successful in their bid for a place in the competitive U.S. Fulbright Fellowship programs.

These scholarships will enable them to pursue graduate level education in the United States starting this year.

Sanford is the Deputy Leader of the United Worker Party in Dominica, a member of the Eastern Caribbean’s indigenous Kalinago people, and a teacher at Dominica State College.  He has been granted a Fulbright Faculty Development Scholarship, enabling him to study at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.  He will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Economic Policy.

The other scholars are Thandiwe Lyle of Grenada, Stacy Gumbs from St. Kitts and Nevis, Claudius Maxine Browne from St. Vincent, and Lindy Damiana Ann and Emefa Sewordor from St. Lucia.  The scholars are pursuing a wide range of Master’s level and Doctoral degrees in a variety of subjects including economics, psychology, dance, heritage studies, arts administration and public administration.

Thandiwe Lyle has been granted a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship.  An attorney who was trained at the University of the West Indies (UWI), she has been admitted to Georgetown University where she will earn a Master’s Degree in international Business and Economic Law.  Ms. Lyle’s program began on July 10 with an intensive four week course on the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education.

Stacy Gumbs, a teacher at C.F. Bryant Community College, has been granted a Fulbright Faculty Development Scholarship.  She has been admitted to the Teacher’s College of Columbia University where she will earn a Master’s degree in organizational psychology.

Emefa Sewordor, an economist at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, was granted a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship.  She has been admitted to Georgia State University where she will earn a Doctoral degree in Public Administration.  She previously earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Toronto and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of British Columbia.

Maxine Browne, a dance development officer with the Government of St. Vincent, was awarded a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship.  She will attend the American University where she will earn a Master’s degree in Arts Administration.  Ms Browne previously earned a Bachelor of Arts from the joint program with the University of the West Indies (Mona) and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

Linda Ann Damiana Alexander, Senior Lecturer in French and Head of the Department of Humanities at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, was granted a Fulbright Visiting Researcher Scholarship.  Ms. Alexander will spend four months at Tulane University in New Orleans working on an academic project entitled “Constructing National Identity through the Arts and Heritage Education.”

The Fulbright Program, which celebrates its 65th anniversary in 2011, is the “flagship international exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.”

The Program operates in more than 155 countries and has provided over 285,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research in each others’ countries and exchange ideas.  Approximately 7,000 grants are awarded annually.

Education plays a leading role in the success of anyone. We need intelligent people in public office instead of the common trend where a person comes from classroom and becomes a PM and Finance Minister. We do not need another uneducated leader again; else people like Gonzalez, the Pm of St. Vincent, will feel they can come and fool us again in believing we don’t need an International Airport and run to build one in St. Vincent. So Sanford I agree with you. Go get your education and come back home to lead our beloved country,

so wat’s wrong in asking for his services while he’s there…. whoever brought sour up.. could just charge a fee etc… and tings done… management and those responsible were just looking out for themselves if that’s the case… also it is alleged through the grape vine…. sour only came back d.a with u.s $500.00 papamet… a backyard barbeque in n.y can make almost $3000.00… so in that big show don’t tell me sour sour didn’t get due reward…. ay lass… yaw yaw doh blame marlon g…. yaw yaw

spoken like a real SOT!!!!!!!! you remind me of one of those Dominicans who wrote me off while I was going through my struggles….PATHETIC…..that’s why some of you will die singing for yall suppers…you know whats HILARIOUS….some of the same SOTS!! that was looking down on me when I was in the gutter…. when they see me now they come smiling and asking me for this and that…..THATS WHEN I TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO POOPOO ALL OVER THEM……AND REMIND THEM OF THE DAYS THEY WERE LAUGHING ME AND SAYING I WAS A WASTE…lolololo NOW WHAT??????????? I PURPOSELY REMIND THEM BECAUSE EVEN IF I DIDNT BENEFIT FROM THE LESSON THEY WILL KNOW NOT TO JUDGE THE NEXT BOOK BY ITS COVER…. SOMETIMES ALL PEOPLE NEED IS A CHANCE, AND SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM. YOU WOULD BE SUPRISED TO SEE HOW GREAT SOME PEOPLE FROM THE GUTTER CAN BECOME WITH THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY…
